A Little Short on Padding and other things February 19, 2008 Eli (Ga. USA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
While this bag is not a "bad bag" or poorly constructed it doesn't quite live up to the description. So I'll hit on the points first that I found most disappointing. #1. The bag is not nearly as padded as the description gives. To be specific the "Two Internal Padded Zippered Gun Pockets" are only padded externally, that is only the part of the pocket facing the outside of the bag is padded, the pocket sides facing the inside of the bag are a nylon fabric without padding. This leaves your firearms or attached scopes or red dot devices unprotected from hard objects that you may have in your case, say for example that third pistol that you don't really want bumping into the one in the side pocket, or that box of rounds that weighs nearly as much as the gun itself. There is also no padding in the bottom of the pocket to protect it from bumps or scrapes that come from putting it in the trunk or piling it in with other bags. #2. The End Pockets are also only externally padded with no padding between the inside of the pockets and the main compartment of the bag. If you use the end pockets as they sagest for your hearing protection, or place your eye protection in the end pockets chances are neither one will fare well. #3. The Bottom of the bag is not padded, the "Rigid Floor Plate" is functional, and is of the "hard cardboard inside a thin plastic sleeve" type, would have been better if they had made it out of a solid piece of semi flexible plastic instead of cardboard. It would also have been better if they would have put padding in the bottom of the bag. The padded Divider which is acceptable as a divider can be used to pad the bottom of the bag, but then you no longer have a padded divider. #4. There is no padding in the top of the bag. #5. The Two Internal Padded (well only half padded) Zippered Gun Pockets are too small. My Ruger Mark III with 6 7/8 inch barrel with an overall length of 11 1/8 inch is as long a handgun as the bag will accommodate. That in and of itself isn't bad, however the Ruger is also too tall for the pockets so that the pockets can not be properly zipped closed. By the design of the bag the pockets are also fairly narrow so if you have a wider handgun it will likely not fit in the pockets. #6. In the product description it states "This entire range bag has double padding" I took this to mean that either the bag had more padding than normal bags, such as padding twice as thick, or that each compartment was individually padded, similar to the way my SLR camera bag is padded. Neither is the case what padding there is only of a nominal thickness, nothing doubled about it, and there is no padding between the individual compartments to be able to call it double padding. Now on to the good points. #1. Made of tough durable nylon fabric. #2. Love the large zippers with extra large tabs that make it very easy to zip and unzip the top and end pockets of the bag. #3. The front magazine pocket is sufficiently padded with padding protecting the magazines both from objects outside the bag and inside the bag. Again the zipper was done well, while the zipper is not as big as the ones on the top or the ones on the end pockets it is fairly large and has the extra large tab to open and close it. #4. Main storage area is large enough to hold plenty of ammo for a trip to the range plus a small cleaning kit and some tools. Overall it is a well constructed bag but needed a little more thought, and a lot more padding put into it. Not a bad bag for handguns your not too concerned about getting a little roughed up, but I wouldn't trust my adjustable sights or any optics to it, that is if you could fit any kind of optic to your handgun and still get it to fit in the bag.
