On the Fritz again February 9, 2008 Halo Faire (Canada) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Like I mentioned in my previous reviews you pay a whole lot of money for basically the same program brought out year after year. If you absolutely must have the highest rated Fritz and you can play in the top 1% of players go for it. But in my humble opinion it's just as good to buy the bargain basement $10 edition from last year. Nearly ALL the features are on this. Frustrating having a program that only brings out minor comestic changes and doesn't invest some of the money for new editions in major player friendly improvements As noted in other comments it's fine having a 'bulletin board" layout back in the good old pioneering 1990's but having now available duo processing, high speed internet, anti-aliasing, You'd think they would bring some realistic chess boards or give some eye candy out . Even if they actually made improvements in the engine so that it plays more ' human' it'd be something. Note that chessbase STILL only give you a years/6 months online play. Then you have to pay annual subscription fees . In this day and age when you pay $50 for any other game programs that server should be free. This isn't exactly a MORPG with weekly updates. Note, NO support or tech help available. Only callback is that you can email them !! I have no issues with the smarts of the engine, but even since Fritz 6 it has been able to outplay 90% of the players. So when buying a new program it should give you a whole more. I'm not too sure about this other reviewer on this page. I always get suspicious when this is their only post, praise the product too much , give it five stars and make idiotic propaganda statements. "Want to setup a special chess position, Fritz's interface makes it super easy. " Either the person works for the company or likes to give out unqualified unthoughtful support. It's fine to have a positive review, but make sure it's an actual informed opinion and not sounding like the sales rep.
Fritz isn't on the fritz, it's Outstanding February 5, 2008 Leon Rosiczkowski (APO, AE USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you're serious about improving your chess, the ChessBase products of which Fritz is the flagship are outstanding. The interface is the BEST available: it's attractive, it's easy to use, it's highly modifiable, and the 3-D sets are among the best. The program's playing strength can easily be adjusted and can be set to match your ability. Fritz's star features for me are its many training features. For instance, my study of chess openings is done by using Fritz not the dozen books I own on the topic. I have owned every Fritz version since number 5, and I will continue to purchase each new version as a statement of its quality and value. I primarily use the Fritz interface with the Rybka chess engine (currently the strongest chess program) because the interface allows me to add UCI chess engines such as Rybka to the program. In fact, I have over a dozen chess engines available when I start Fritz 11 (including Shredder,Junior, Tiger, plus many more), I can play against any of them and have the others kibitz the game. Tournaments are easy to setup and conduct with a combination of human and computers players. Want to setup a special chess position, Fritz's interface makes it super easy. If it sounds like I admire the program's interface, I do! As I mentioned earlier this Fritz is definitely not "on the fritz".
Update to the new Fritz? Maybe.....maybe not... February 20, 2008 Taylor Rand (Florida, MO USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I would say the most important new feature of Fritz 11 - to the practical, average player - is the calculation training mode which allows you to make moves on the board without moving the pieces recording your move orders (even illegal moves!) within a game: so you have a record of how clear your tactical thinking is. I think you should visit Chessbase.com to see a video example of this mode in action. It's quite cool. For me, calculation training is worth it because I use it. I think it helps me improve my ability to test my capacity to visualize variations and later see if they were correct. However, if you're unimpressed with this mode or simply doubt you'll use Fritz 11 for this purpose, then probably you'd be better off with the very similar and far cheaper Fritz X. The chessboards (which are quite attractive, both in 2D and 3D), the othertraining functions, fairly similar.
