Admit it: you never thought you'd be buying a video with the word potty in the title. But it's been months, and while Junior seems to love his potty, he doesn't actually do anything in it. So you need some inspiration. Well, you've found it. This video expands upon the popular children's book by the same name in two ways: there's a sing-along potty song and a 13-minute doctor's statement for parents. The director of child psychiatry at a prominent New York hospital will calmly reassure you that it's perfectly normal for Junior to be taking his sweet time letting go of the diapers, and that's worth a lot. And the animated retelling of Joshua's potty progress is good, too. But it's the "music video" of the oh-so-catchy "Potty Song" that makes this half-hour tape. And just in case you aren't already singing the song in line at the bank or the grocery store, the thoughtful producers have included a lyric sheet for you. "Yes, I'm going to my potty, potty / Now, I'm going to my potty, potty...." --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars Once Upon A Potty for Him   February 3, 2001

Having twins boys, everything was a challenge. Potty training being no exception. After trying for what seemed like forever and the twins being three years old, I was ready to give up. I purchased this video as a last resort, played it and in no time at all I had successfully potty trained my twins. I used this tape with my next child and had successfully potty trained him before the age of two!! I didn't need to push my children to learn, it just came naturally, with them wanting to mimic the video. It is a cute tape with such a catchy song,(which we sang all over town) that my children continued to watch it even after they had mastered Potty Training! There is also a parent section that has some great information and reasuring words of encouragement.I will definetly be using this tape on the grandkids!! Bring them on.....

2 out of 5 stars Not so great!   July 3, 2001

We had not read the book before purchasing this video. The babies in the video are very, very young, as in hardly up on their feet, let alone using the potty. They start with The Potty Song, the story is short and uses silly words like wee-wee and then they end with The Potty Song. The Potty Song is back to the babies playing and not making much sense. If your child is very young and uses the potty, they might relate but for my "big kid" (2 1/2 years old) this wee-lly wee-lly stunk!

3 out of 5 stars It gets the point across... but....   October 19, 1999

This video does a good job of making very clear the point of what the potty is for... good for very early parts of training. BUT... the video is very short, the parents section is not very good at all, and the format of the video is tacky. I know it is hard to keep some sense of decorum while discussing bodily functions, but this video was really not necessary.

2 out of 5 stars Not for older potty-trainers   September 20, 2004

A friend gave me this video hoping it would help train my reluctant 3-year-old. While he was very interested in the tape and even bopped to the song, it did not help him overall.

One, the children looked younger than 2 years old! So he did not relate on that level and kept referring to the children in the video as "babies" and "cute little babies!"

Two, the potty used is not the type of potty commonly used in the United States (at least in my opinion.) The part about what a potty is "not" for became redundant and boring for a child who didn't relate to that "what is it?" to begin with.

Three, the only reference to a true toilet was when Mommy poured the wee-wee into the toilet.

On the other hand, I read negative reviews about seeing the 'hole' in the cartoon fanny of Joshua. Well, I want raise my child to know his body parts -- as a child well-versed in their own body and its functions is statistically less likely to be targeted by a sex offender. I didn't think this reference was a big deal, and it even helped me teach my child about that particular body function.

I would only recommend this tape to those who are training children in the 1 to 2 year old range and using a similar potty. (It looks like a molded-to-underside bowl.)

3 out of 5 stars Too short...Too simple   March 21, 2000

We liked the book and rented the video from Blockbuster video. We were dissappointed because the "Potty song" was much longer than the story. My son liked the video, but there's a lot more for him to learn about going to the potty than is offered here. It's a good introduction to potty learning.
