It works but it's kind of boring November 20, 2006 Jennifer Mitchell 44 out of 45 found this review helpful
We are now on Volume 2, the third DVD that my daughter has watched from this set. The Starter Video is the first, then Volume 1. She has all but lost interest at this point. I can't say that I blame her. It's kind of boring and a little bit too long. However, I don't have any better ideas. It's reading. So I think that, for teaching reading, they have done a good job. The video will show a word, say it twice, with an arrow going from left to right to indicate that you should read from left to right. Then they show a short a video of that word: "Eyes. Eyes." (Switch to video of a small child) "Marco, close your eyes!" At first my daughter watched it just like any other kid's show. Now, (after three months) she knows they will say the word twice, and she looks down while they are saying the words, and then looks up when they show the fun video part. So I have added flash cards that I show to her at other times. I made sure to write the words in lower case letters so that they will look like the words she sees on the video. I just do a few at a time, since her attention span isn't very long, and I don't want to make reading a chore for her. I also write the words on her magna doodle (separate from watching the video) in an attempt to make it more interesting. She knows how to read many words from the DVD by sight, and is the talk of the town, but of course she cannot sound words out. The theory behind "Your Baby Can Read" is that your baby will eventually figure out how to sound out words if she learns enough words. She confuses similar words pretty often, like yes and eyes. She also forgets a lot of the words if I don't review them with her for a couple of days. I do let her watch this video by herself (sort of a no-no), and it worked at first. But now, even when I'm sitting with her, I can't get her to pay attention for long. I think that perhaps, if I had always made it a point to sit with her while the DVD was playing, and hadn't let her watch cartoons, which are way more interesting, then maybe she would still think it was the best thing ever. I don't think that's realistic, though.
Attractive to your child March 16, 2006 Ahmad Barradah (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) 24 out of 32 found this review helpful
These set of DVDs are really great work, when I start playing the DVD, my son (11 Months) run to the TV and start watching the songs (Only Songs), but he is not attracted by the other materials included, such like pictures and pronouncing the letters. I believe, the set is a good tool for you, but you have to schedule a time when you can sit with your child and teach him using these materials, otherwise, buying this set will be waste of money, because your child will not concentrate on learning more than he concentrate on the songs, not because they are songs, but because he/she is seeing nice colors, and nice rhythms on the TV. Again, you have to spend enough time with your child if you want him to learn, but depending on this set will not be enough, but it will waste your money.

I introduced Chinese pre-schoolers to these fun, entertaining, and interactive videos. Within 5 months of viewing the videos [without an native-speaking English teacher present]: the children began speaking English in phrases. I now teach English as a Second Language in Michigan. I use these videos to get shy children to speak and interact as they watch the videos.
Great for my 2 year old--WOW!!! January 5, 2007 J. Worch (Kansas City, MO) 13 out of 20 found this review helpful
I have been working with my youngest son since he was a baby, using the Teach Your Baby to Read method. However, as I have 4 other children, a home business, and we homeschool, I don't really have the time or energy to do the 9 sessions required for the Teach Your Baby method. When I saw these DVDs, I was very interested. We have been using them for less than a month now, and my son, who is almost 2, is now reading many of the words on the starter DVD, and some on Set 1. It is unusual that he would be reading them so soon, and I am sure it is becuase he was already exposed to reading words at an earlier age. These DVDs are wonderful for a child who is not allowed to vegetate in front of the TV. This video is the highlight of the day for my son, who is rarely allowed to watch anything else. However, if you child is accustomed to cartoons or other children's animated videos, they may lose interest quickly. I don't find this to be the fault of the video, though, simply the fault of the parent in allowing the other forms of entertainment to dull the child's mind.
Excellent! June 29, 2007 C. J. Narron (USA) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
These DVD's are fantastic! My daughter is 20 months old and has been watching them since she was 10 months old. Within a week, she was doing the instructional things on the DVD like "arms up" and started repeating words shortly thereafter. By the time she was 14 months she had a vocabulary of 25 words and now at 20 months she has over 100 words in her vocabulary and can speak in sentences!! Not only is her vocabulary amazing, but she can also READ!!! We were serious about this program so we followed the parental instructions...it is a MUST! The DVD's work with your help! Also, we never watch TV around our daughter or let her watch TV. Not only is it Dr. Titzer's recommendation about TV watching, but that of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Our daughter says new words everyday! She repeats words we say, probably because she learned to repeat the words from watching Your Baby Can Read! I can't say enough about these DVD's. When we are around other people, they are amazed at how well she talks and can't believe she is only 20 months old!!
