What makes the nipples flow at different rates is the way you position the nipple in the mouth. If you need a slow flow then you put the nipple in the mouth with the 1 drop facing up, if you need a fast speed then you put the nipple in the mouth with the 2 drops facing up and so on. It works okay until my son wants to take the bottle in and out of his mouth and carry it around. Then he never gets it back to the right flow and gets upset. I am not getting these variable ones again.

Agree 100% with the problems with the variable flow nipples. They flow fast no matter how the baby held them. Waste of money because you will use them a few times (only to make sure that you didn't do something wrong). In any case each time we used it, the formula came rushing out. We called Born Free and their customer service told us that they worked and would do nothing for us. Our bottles and sippy cups are currently all born free but the company's customer service leaves something to be desired - like actual service.

I recently purchased these bottles and since the store was out of stage 2 nipples, I purchased the variable flow. I've spent 3 days trying to figure out what I am doing wrong as the flow is so fast no matter how I turn it. My 4 month old just ends up gagging and crying. What a waste of money, do not buy these nipples.

I rarely write reviews of products, but I am so disappointed with these nipples that I had to save someone else the same frustration I've had, as well as the waste of money. The nipples just flow way too fast, no matter which "level" you have pointed to your babies nose. My 8 month old chokes whenever I try to use these, even if I turn the nipples to level 1. I've had other variable flow nipples with other bottles before, so I know that the idea can work. But somehow Born Free missed the boat on these. They are horrible. I'm throwing them away and just getting the regular nipples.

I also never write reviews but if I can save someone from spending wasted money then I'll be happy. DON"T get the variable nipples. I went to babies r Us because my 4 month old was ready to move on to the next level. The store only had 0-3 months and 3+ for the nipples choice. Well, I never heard of variable nipples so I thought thats a great idea. It would save me from having to buy more nipples. Well, the nipple flows so fast! It doesn't matter what level you have it on. Also, if you are trying to feed your baby in the dark it's hard to see how to position the bottle. I didn't know born free had just level 2 nipples. Apparentley they do, babies r us just didn't have them. My 4 month old chokes while drinking the bottle and the milk goes everywhere! The milk is gone in like one minute! I hate them and I am so mad I wasted my money on them.
