This really does actually work! January 12, 2008 William Gray (Greenwich, CT USA) 24 out of 26 found this review helpful
In the past 23 years or so of my life, there have only been about 3 instances where my skin has been totally clear of acne: once or twice when I've been out in the sun too long for consecutive days and gotten sunburned repeatedly (I don't recommend this, and the anti-acne effect wears off soon anyway); when I had my appendectomy and had to take intravenous and then oral antibiotics for about a week and a half (and the acne came back about a week and a half after I finished the antibiotics); and when I was on Accutane for 5 months (and exactly a month after I finished my course, the acne all came back again). But now there's a fourth instance, and I don't see how the effect could wear off if I keep using it. Yes, the Verilux ClearWave. And I've been using it for only a little more than a week at this point, and already my skin is down to one last bump of acne that itself is almost gone! Keep in mind that the recommended course is for 12 weeks, so not everyone may see such dramatic improvement so quickly. But I'm living proof that it's definitely possible. And that it works. Also keep in mind that, so far as I can tell, this is not a "cure". A cure would necessitate causing the sebaceous glands to shrink or otherwise permanently reduce their output of sebum; given that excess sebum causes the p. acnes bacteria in the skin to proliferate more than "normal" and to clog pores and cause inflammation and thus acne. What the ClearWave (like any other blue/red light therapies) does is to KILL the bacteria itself, or at least to cause it to self-destruct. And it doesn't happen all at once, thus the need for repeated exposures. All those sunburns I got that cleared my acne temporarily? Same idea, since I was soaking up all those extra blue and red light wavelengths from the sun, except that unlike the sun, the ClearWave emits no harmful UV rays, so no burn, and no risk of skin cancer, and you're also getting more blue/red light exposure with the ClearWave in less time than you'd get with the sun, so 15-20 minutes per day is really all you need, and you can keep using it indefinitely. I've also been on 15 grams of vitamin B5 per day since November of 2001, which has helped to reduce the amount and severity of acne I'd get, but the B5 has never "cured" me, per se, though for some people (usually still teens) it can clear it up either totally or enough to carry them through puberty and to the point where their oil output normalizes, thus sparing them the physical & emotional scarring. My first point here is that I'm already using a form of "control" on my acne to an extent, so perhaps that's why I'm responding so well and so quickly to the ClearWave. Be that as it may, my other point is that you shouldn't sabotage yourself either. What you eat can and does have an effect on your acne. No, food isn't the "cause" of acne, but some foods can really exacerbate it (despite what a few backwards-thinking dermatologists are still claiming, regardless that most of their medical peers now understand this). Some people are more sensitive to certain foods than others. Dairy, especially whole milk and butter, bothers me. Oil and vinegar (like some major sandwich chains use) gives me deeper, almost cystic acne. Chocolate is truly horrible for my skin. Fried foods, etc. Anything that is going to cause your skin to output more sebum (which is one of the body's ways of getting rid of excess oil) is going to worsen your acne. Even the so-called "healthy" oils, like olive and canola, do bad things to some people's skin (especially mine). So don't start using the ClearWave (or, really, any other treatment for that matter) and think you can suddenly let your dietary habits fall apart, or that you can simply continue to eat badly if you already have been. Limit your fat intake (don't eliminate fat completely, but just keep it between around 15-20% of your total calories), and keep intake of simple sugars (sucrose, honey, etc) to a minimum, since they can affect your hormonal balance and influence sebum output as well. EAT CLEAN! Do that, and you can expect to see much better results, and much faster. I was already eating pretty clean when I started the ClearWave a week ago, and I'm really amazed at how fast it's working. A few tips on use of the ClearWave: keep your face within 6 inches of the lamp; the instructions aren't very clear as to whether they mean "up to" 6 inches, or "within". I emailed Verilux and they said "within", and that's what I've been doing, and it makes sense, given physics, etc. Also, do turn your face so you can get even exposure. I like to do front for 5 minutes, then left (or right) for 5 minutes, then the other side for 5 minutes, and actually I do front again for another 5, though that may be unnecessary (I like to err on the side of caution). After a few more weeks of this, assuming progress continues as it has, I may actually buy 2 more ClearWaves and set them up around me so I don't have to turn my head at all--I contacted Verilux about this, and they saw no concerns with someone trying this, but I'm a geek, so don't feel compelled to do this yourself. One last tip: the goggles are pretty uncomfortable. They are also, to my understanding, not necessary. The light won't damage your eyes any more than staring into a regular light bulb would (or so I have read, and besides, your eyes should be closed anyway), but the ClearWave *is* bright, so you may want to wear the goggles, or something more comfortable if you can find it. After the first few days, I found that the light wasn't bothering me and opted to stop using the goggles. Yes, obviously, my eyes are closed when I use the ClearWave, as yours should be, even with the goggles, but the light I see through my eyelids is no brighter than you'd get lying with your eyes closed on the beach on a slightly overcast day--and remember, no UV here. So do what's comfortable for you. I also use a kitchen timer to let me know when my time is up and when I need to turn my face. And listening to music while using the ClearWave is a pleasant experience. I'll update this review every so often as my progress goes on (or, in a worst-case scenario, if it for some inexplicable reason reverses). For now, the ClearWave definitely deserves it's 5-star rating from me.
Shine on, shine on - the amazing little light! January 14, 2008 JD (Detroit, Michigan USA) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Amazing! Plain and simple, this thing works! My girlfriend and I started using this product 6 weeks ago. After about 2 weeks of use my skin (not hers) became much worse and similar to what others have noted in past reviews. However, we continued to use the light and after about 4 weeks of daily use everything cleared up to a condition which is better than one could imagine. Pretty much perfect for both of us. My theory, the light has to pull out the bad stuff before you can see the good. If you have any reservations about this product, dont. We were at first hesitant to try, but the money-back guarantee made that decision easier. Well worth the sub-$200 price tag.
It does what it says it will January 13, 2007 new attetewd (Virginia) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
When used at least 6 days per week for 15 minutes it does a great job at nearly eliminating breakouts and keeping skin clear for my 14 year old daughter. I got the light because I had noticed that she did not break out during the summmer months, and hoped that using this light would have a similar effect, and it does. Much better results than benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid products alone have had. We have found that she can skip one day, but if 2 days are missed, breakouts reoccur. I think that over time it will pay for itself when considering what I have spent on expensive over-the-counter acne treatments. We are now getting by with just an inexpensive Equate brand cleanser and a foundation for acne-prone skin.
Talk to your doctor January 17, 2007 Joy Maven (California) 9 out of 21 found this review helpful
I made the mistake of buying this light to treat my acne without first talking to my dermatologist about it. After just using it three times my acne became more out of control than it had in years--my face broke out in places it had never broken out before. It took me two months of using medication from my doctor to get my acne under control. I would not recommend using this device unless a doctor says it would work for you.
This product works. October 8, 2007 DC Deb (Washington, DC) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this product for my sister who has struggled with acne for years. She started to use it and noticed a difference after about a week. You have to continue using it to maintian the results. It's great to see something working for her after all her frustration. a
