Fast paced and fun addition to a great series! September 25, 2007 Land Shark (Salt Lake City, UT USA) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I think this is the best book in the series so far. I know book one got alot of critical acclaim. That was well deserved, but it really only set the stage for the books to come. Book two took us into an entirely new world with new characters that I admit took awhile to get to know. Book three explodes out of the gate and does nothing but pick up speed from there. I literally could not put this book down until it was finished. If you haven't read the first two books or read one and not two, stop reading this and pick them up. You will need that knowledge to get this one, but you will not regret reading book three. It's a thrill ride with lots of twists and that classic dark, dry humour that we have come to expect from Obert and this series.
The Situation Worsens October 30, 2007 Pat Shand (Freeport, NY USA) 8 out of 14 found this review helpful
The first book in the Leven Thumps series (Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo (Leven Thumps)) wowed me to no end. I was delighted to have discovered such a wonderful book that, though it wasn't perfect, told a quirky fantasy story without resorting to silliness or convoluted plots. I gave it a 9/10. The second book in the series (Leven Thumps and the Whispered Secret (Leven Thumps)) let me down. The prose resorted to a lot of show/tell, didn't update the reader on what had happened in the previous book, and the plot became both silly and convoluted. Though, the climax was great, so I gave it a 7/10, after begging Obert Skye for a better book next time. Well here we are. The third book in the Leven Thumps series, "The Eyes of the Want," is much more like the second book than it is like the first. However, there are even less good points to be spoken of than there were in Book Two. Let me break it down blow by blow. "Said" is an invisible verb. It flows well, and it always works. However, Skye feels the need to replace the word "said" with words that--most of the time--don't fit. Instead of "he said" Skye uses the following: he bit, he complimented, he apologized, he instructed. Those examples were taken from about five consecutive pages. They are spread heavily throughout the book, and are often used wrongly. It is simply talking down to the reader when an author writes something like "'I'm sorry,' he apologized." The situations in this book are even sillier, and the plot becomes so twisty that it, at times, is extremely confusing. And that comes from a man who was a fan of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower." The author assumes that the reader remembers every tiny detail from the previous books, not giving us as much as a line to remind us what has happened. In a book series like this, with each volume just a part of an overall arc, that is unacceptable. Again, as he did with Book Two, Obert Skye separates the main characters immediately. We only get about two chapters of Winter/Leven interaction in this whole book, and only in the very beginning. Winter and Geth spend the entire book together, and their plot-line is so tedious that I almost put the book down. Worst of all, it seems like a MAJOR part of Book Two and part of this book were for absolutely nothing. Don't take this as a spoiler, because I promise you--it has NOTHING to do with the plot. Sabine dies. Sabine, the main villain of Book One, dies in the middle of this book. How? His essence is swallowed by grass. After he dies, the character with who he possessed carry on as if almost nothing happened. There had to be another way to do this. Why bring him back at all if it was to die a lame death for a second time? There are a few positives about this book: The prose itself is better when describing scenery. Skye has an almost Tolkien-like grace when he paints vivid pictures of the strange land of Foo across his pages. There is a nice scene with Antsel, who readers will remember from the first book. Skye has found a good character in The Want who, despite all the other character being (very boringly) either good or bad, lives in the grey area. Also, the closing of Leven's part of the story added a great layer of complexity to the book. After a betrayal comes a revelation, that everything is not how it seems, and the whole situation puts a great and ambiguous spin on the "Chosen One" issue. I'd ask again for Obert Skye to do better next time, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. Hopefully, since my expectations are so low, I'll at least enjoy a few parts of Book Four when it comes out. Generously... 5/10
More of What You Love October 2, 2007 Mike Smith (Albuquerque, NM) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I absolutely love the Leven Thumps series of books, and was thrilled to discover that Book 3 of the series did nothing to damage my feelings for the previous volumes. If anything, it made me love them all more. In Book One of this series, Leven Thumps made his way to a magical world known as Foo, where dreams ARE reality. In Book Two, Leven helped his friend Geth journey across Foo to change back into his real form from the tiny toothpick he had become. And here, in Book Three, EVERYTHING happens. Leven meets the Want--the half-crazy sort-of-ruler of Foo, who sees humanity's every dream. Geth discovers he's shrinking, because part of him is missing.... A secret that threatens the existence of Foo gets out. The entire realm prepares for war. Leven's former guardian, Terry Graph, discovers a bizarre and powerful robe. The dangers of Foo begin leaking into reality. And a great evil, hidden beneath the soil, begins to reveal itself. This book is funny, surprising, and well worth the wait. Its ending is terrific, unbelievably shocking and exciting, and makes the entire book worth it. There are a lot of young adult fantasy books being written today, spawning in the wake of the HMS Harry Potter, but not all of them deserve the time they take to read. This one, however, the saga of Leven Thumps and the world of Foo, does. This one is great. This one, you should buy.
Okay book #1, Book two, dissapointing, but couldn't finish this book, its sad.. March 24, 2008 Kenneth R. Laws 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Okay first book, The best thing about book 2 was the last sentence, which really gave me hope since he was introducing an all powerful character, but such a let down. Ever been upset after reading something and learning that it was a dream, hence valueless? I have that feeling constantly during book 2 and 3. Book three took a dive right off the bat, and I had to quit half way through and could not take his meandering waffle anymore. Sorry, I just feel cheated since the first book had promise, overlooking the animated toothpick. Obert, if you read this, sorry, I think you should have rapped up your story in the first book. Ken
Another excellent installment with a twist ending October 28, 2007 Marit (Boise, Idaho USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have enjoyed this series and looked forward to this book, as have my tweens and teen. The plot is intriguing, the characters are well drawn, the suspense and twists and turns keep me on the edge of my seat. Foo is such a fun place to visit and I enjoy the imagination of this fantasy writer. In this installment, the plot moves forward without Leven's side kick Clover (picture a cross between Jiminy Cricket and the dragon in the Disney movie Mulan.) Leven has to undo potential damage that he has accidentally caused to his dear sycophant, all other sycophants, and all of foo. Can he right wrongs in time? As he tries to find the resolution of this problem, he encounters many more challenges and fate rescues him several times leaving him bruised and older. But, as he continues, he learns that things are not as they seem and may be actually much worse in this world. Meanwhile, life in reality is getting worse and worse. The news stations can't keep up with the devastation of strange happenings and disasters and dreams are weakening. Forces there are trying to get back into foo and break down the barrier. Then, at the end, Leven Thumps learns things that will change him and foo forever. They are devestating to him and will change the future for all of reality and foo as well. Can he make it be changes for the good or is it too late? Can he turn the tide before it is too late? This book may not have all the answers, but if Leven makes it out alive, with or without his friends, you will be left invigorated, satisfied and wanting to read more all at once! This book is breathlessly exciting, sometimes a little hard to follow with so much going on, but a satisfying read. A must read series for all fantasy lovers and highly recommended for anyone who can put up with the genre. I strongly recommend reading books one and two before you read this one, but it does stand on its own if you concentrate. This Leven Thumps surprise ending will intrigue you and make you a fan if you weren't before. And besides your reality may depend on it!
