Product Description
Aquasaurs are prehistoric creatures that can grow up to 2 inches, and you can now watch live Aquasaurs swim in an amazing prehistoric environment that's 250 million years in the making. Includes live Aquasaur eggs that hatch when placed in water, and a habitat that features an underwater volcano. Also includes Aquasaur food and manual. Habitat measures approximately 10" x 6" x 10" tall.

Eggs may take up to a week to hatch but typically will hatch within a few days. Aquasaurs live approximately between 20 and 90 days after hatching. Adequate food is provided in this kit; however, "crab food" from a local pet store will act as Aquasaur food.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than sea monkeys!!   October 30, 2003

My 6 year old is really enjoying his Aquasaurs. They start out as eggs and within a day or so you see little dots swimming around. Each day they grow like crazy! After two weeks we have two that are fully grown !! The only drawback so far, is that after a few days the water starts getting murky. The suggestion is to scoop half the water out and put new water in, but I didn't find that to help. I eventually scooped out the fish and then cleaned the tank out. You also MUST use bottled spring water. Tap water will kill the fish. So you have to have plenty on hand for the risning and cleaning and refilling of the tank. Also, a parent is needed to help with the cleaning. The feeding is easy, as the food is provided. Aside from the work, it's really fun to see how big they will get and if any new ones are born.

5 out of 5 stars Super Fun, Gross and a Exciting Desktop Accessory   August 5, 2005

I was a bit skeptical about this venture because of some negitive reviews. But I will tell you that this has been a great fun summer science project .
I hatched 7 Aquasaurs and 1 Sea monkey from half the egg pack provided. I have 3 large Aqusaurs left, they are each over an inch long! Just follow the directions and place a lamp over the tank to help keep the temperature just right ( it's simple) and you will have a great experience.
They are a bit gross and creepy, they hatched in a day, barely visible and in 4-5 days were noticibly larger. They grow at a super fast rate that at times is kind of spooky.
When the monsters are a bit larger I recommend taking out half of the water with a cheap turkey baster once a week and refill.
It gets kind of sludgy at the bottom.
I have the tank on my desk at work and it has been the talk of the office this summer. Everyone checks the status of the Aquasaurs.
Great product!

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but need to keep trying   January 7, 2006

My 6 year old was thrilled with this. It was and probably still is her favorite Christmas present last year, even though her one Aquasaur that grew to over 1 inch died in 11 days (the instructions said 20-90 days). We followed all directions extremely carefully, and I oversaw everything she did, so I know it wasn't "user error". The 2nd egg packet yielded 3 Aquasaurs, and 2 of them lasted 20 days. We ordered more eggs, and with the new eggs (and new/different "hatching" instructions), we got 8 Aquasaurs! And these 8 lasted over 2 months! They were fascinating to watch but probably should have had more space because they tended to fight (sometimes viciously). With that many in there, tank cleaning became a bit challenging. Still, we were mesmerized by them.

I agree, the tank is super flimsy, and our lid doesn't fit. We put it on a tray to help with moving it.

Overall I still think this has been a great experience for my daughter. And having the first one die before we expected, and then seeing the competition among the large group, was a learning experience in and of itself.

4 out of 5 stars Why clean the tank?   March 4, 2004

I really don't understand the other reviews of this item. Maybe I misread the instructions, but I did not see anything about cleaning the tank or changing the water. The only caveat was that you need to be careful not to put too much food in the water (which might cause too much algal growth). A number of our aquasaurs hatched and two survived and have grown to about an inch in two weeks. They are interesting looking creatures (very different from brine shrimp) and very active. A little algae has grown on the bottom but it is really no problem. My understanding is that these things evolved to live in puddles, for crying out loud. Leave them alone. Let them live for a few weeks and when they die, throw out the water. My son loves watching them grow and cavort around the tank, and I hope we will get another batch from the remaining eggs.

I am 7 years old and my mom gave me these aquasaur pets as a gift. The aquasaurs hatched after 3 days. It was so much fun taking care of them and I learned a lot. They grew quickly. Most boys and girls that love science and prehistoric animals will enjoy these aquasaur pets.
