Amazingly small and portable, although not high end. June 30, 2008 S. Zamora (Santa Barbara, CA) The pros of the SVC HDDV-2900 begins with it's size. It's smaller than my wallet. I can put the thing in my pants and forget it's there. To have a video camera at that beck and call is awesome - not lugging around some other, large camera. It's resolution is 720x480, which is indeed DVD resolution. It's pretty easy to use, with a clickable joystick thing and a back button of sorts. Although I've heard bad things about the drivers, you don't need them - it saves it's videos on the SD card. Just take it out, put it in the computer, and copy over the video files. The thing also takes still pictures and has some MP3 player capabilities. It charges via USB, which is cool. It comes with a USB to power plug dealy, but you can use any USB to small-USB cord. The cons? Well, it's fixed focus, and it's not of much use is really low light conditions. Occasionally when using the playback, the unit will crash, requiring you to take the battery out and put it in again ( pretty easy to do, though. ) The video quality is good, but when you rotate the camera quickly to point at something different, the image... skews. If you were looking at a cube, it would be a parallelogram while the camera rotated. The still photos aren't that great, and suffer a lot of blurring - probably due to the fixed focus. More minor cons that don't really matter too much - the headphone jack ( for listening to MP3's or video playback ) is not a standard headphone jack. It looks like it but it's slightly smaller. The unit comes with some headphones, but they're obviously not going to be particularly fantastic. You can get an adapter if need be, though. The power button is also a little easy to hit, so it MIGHT turn on in your pocket. You'll know, though, because it makes a loud jingle when it boots up that I can't turn off - there's no setting to do so. The microphone holes are on top of the unit... I would imagine they would work better in front, but it hasn't been a problem yet. Overall? I would totally recommend it. It's size and portability, and ability to slip an impressively small video camera into any pocket trumps all. Just turn it on and record. It's not going to be extraordinarily impressive quality, but it's definitely not bad, despite it's little quirks. Again, it's 720x480, which is cool. It's fine for casual usage, or making a video for YouTube or something. I wouldn't make a scripted movie for YouTube using it, though.
