5 out of 5 stars Fuji Finepix Z20fd Has Good Low Light Performance   May 17, 2008

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2A1ZEQNJ195TD Update: 5-22-08: Although I researched and bought this camera as primarily a good Low Light Performance point-and-shoot still camera, however, this also takes very good MPEG-4 videos.
Here is a sample 46 second video which is the raw, unedited video file straight from this camera's SD memory card of a dim low light dance ballroom (camera was on a tripod). (Update: This is video from the famous Champion Ballroom Academy, in San Diego, Calif.)
Note: this uploaded Amazon video has "pops" and "gaps" and probably due to Amazon condensing my original large 18MB video to a smaller condensed 2MB Flash video format. However my original 18MB video does not have these "pops" and "gaps", and my original video sounds very clear and looks very good.

==========
Original Review: If you read my Customer Review of my JVC GZ-MG255 Camcorder, you will know that I like Low Light Performance.
So I spent time and researched for a good, small pocket-size, point-and-shoot still camera with good Low Light Performance. I did not see anything that I liked yet.
Then I saw this newest model Fujifilm Finepix Z20fd camera advertised for a half-hour on the HSN cable TV shopping channel (see the HSN website to watch video).
I heavily and thoroughly researched this further, and then ordered the Black Color model, and just received this. I am very impressed with this camera.

-- I specifically wanted a convenient Point-and-Shoot low light camera, that specifically did not have a lens that comes out and in out of the camera, since it causes a "delay" waiting, while turning on, and also turning off the camera. The nice sliding cover of this camera protects and turns this camera instantly on and off (and without any delay like other cameras with external outside zoom lens). It has 3X Optical Zoom "inside" the camera, and is called "protected zoom" (as per the HSN Cable TV commercial), and which stays inside the slim camera at all times. (Also has additional switchable on/off "Digital" zoom.) Also, my Fuji will not get the "Lens Error, Restart Camera" ("e18" error) that outside zooming lens Canon camera may get.
-- I normally research and buy the best for natural Low Light Performance, and I think this is the best, small portable, point-and-shoot still camera, and with the new MPEG-4 videos.
-- I took some night time low light still pictures (natural, without flash), and they came out very good. Has ISO of 1600 (means better low light sensitivity).
-- This takes good low light MPEG-4 videos with monaural audio (but can not "zoom" while recording videos). The camera file extension is ".MP4", but to upload this video to Amazon, I just added ".MPG" to the filename (e.g., "DSCF0037.MP4" to "DSCF0037.MP4.MPG") since "MPG" was one of the five Amazon accepted formats of: avi, flv, mov, mpg, wmv. This low light MP4 videos can be "brightened" with Windows Media Player, Windows Movie Maker, and also with Nero, and any other software. This camera takes 640x480 videos, 30 fps, which is same specifications as JVC GZ-MG130/330/335/360/365; Panasonic SDR-H18/H40/H60; and Sony DCR-SR40/42/45. (See my review of my JVC GZ-MG255.)
-- You do not need to buy "xD" memory cards. This works with my SD memory cards and the SD cards do not stick out of the camera, and the SD card lid closes nicely over the SD card. (I always buy, and this works with my higher speed and lifetime warranty SD cards of Kingston Pro 2GB, and SanDisk Ultra II 2GB cards).
-- Very small camera. I measured the size and is: 3 1/2 inch wide; 2 1/8 inch high; 13/16 inch thick.
-- Solidly built, and does not feel cheap. On the HSN Cable TV commercial, the host intentionally dropped this camera to the floor to show that it was strong, and he said it still works. (But of course, I don't recommend you to drop your camera.)
-- I researched the higher model Fujiflim Finepix Z100fd but decided not to buy that higher model because it took videos in AVI and not MPEG-4. (I like MPEG-4 videos because it is about 1/4 the file byte size of the AVI video.)
-- Has separate push button for still camera, and a separate push button to turn on/off video camcorder mode.
-- Has the new technology called "face detection".
-- The Fuji Z20fd is the 2008 latest and greatest technology camera, and is a newer, higher model than the Fuju Z5fd and Fuji Z10fd; and the older Fuji F31fd (which was famous for having very good Low Light Performance).
-- Has Automatic Red Eye Removal, which is what everyone needs, because generally every brand of camera's white flash light can cause the "red eye".

5 out of 5 stars This Fuji is a top performer   May 11, 2008

Scientifically and industrially, Fuji builds world beater optics and optical systems. Mass market cameras are a sideline for them to privilege us with their technology in a consumer package.

Here is the simplest, cheapest, coolest little camera among the pack of little cams. The view finder has a state of the art high resolution LCD. Picture quality is perfect. It's fast and fun. I'm not sure how you could make the user interface more intuitive. There is a lot of technology whipping around inside the package that I can well appreciate.

Because the name is not Nikon or Canon, don't be put off. Fuji consumer products always seem to insure that you get more delight for your money as Fuji fights the known brands for market share by one-upping the competition. This little camera is a another great example.

i decided on the fujifilm finepix z20fd after doing a hard core search for a small digicam. i also looked at similar nikons, cannons, kodaks.
i got it yesterday and i am so happy with it after just taking a few random trial shots! wow!

i TOTALLY rec this little cam if u guys r in the market.... i'll attach some pics i took last night in my trial run. oh and i did ZERO editing to these pics...this is how they took (minus i size reduced them to post).
i'll update this review after i take this baby on vacation and print some pics!
but so far - 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Finally - my perfect Camera   May 23, 2008

After 2 broken digital cameras (one Sony and one Nikon which broke only after 2 months of use), I can truly say this is my perfect camera. It is portable, easy to use and takes probably the best pictures I have seen in this class of camera.

It shoots readily without that long delay I have experienced with other cameras so you can truly capture the moment. It also takes the most awesome action shots in the "sport" mode. I went to an amusement park with my family and caught crystal clear pictures of my husband and daughter on the rides while they were in motion. The "anti-shake" option is wonderful as well considering I am always chasing a 2 year old around for pictures. This camera is very easy to use and at first seems like it might not have many options, but does.

Overall, this is the best camera for the money and I can't say enough about it considering the plethora of problems I have had with my digital cameras in the past.

5 out of 5 stars what a cool, tiny, and durable camera---and cheap!   May 26, 2008

I have this camera for about one week, took aobut 130 pics, using all the different shooting modes available.
1. shooting modes are very intuititve and easy to use
2. great quality pics, i bought the 2Gb card, you can store and take up to 800 pics of the best quality shots
3. I saw the same camera in Target at $180
4. it fits inside my little purse, it is no bigger than my motorola cell phone
5. I was so happy with this little thing, taking pictures of houses, plants, swinging it aorund my wrist, and .... slipped off my hand hitting hard on a concrete pathway....and it survived!! It suffered no damages except for the few ugly nicks on the chrome part (stupid me).
I am so happy!!
