I got these figuring nothing could be worse than the pop up flash by itself, but I was even more impressed than expected. It definitely softens the glare without significant loss to distance. I've only used the white one so far and have been very happy with it. I could take pictures at up to 8 feet, well lit, but without glare.
The black piece slides into place on your hot shoe and the colored pieces fit onto that at the height you need. It slides in and out very easily on my Nikon, but stays in place when it's in.
You can take the pieces apart again to fit into a camera bag, so they don't take up much room.
