Amazon.com Product Description With 48-bit color and an amazing 3,200 x 1,600 dpi optical resolution, the tabloid-size ScanMaker 9800XL brings high-performance scanning to the corporate user, graphic designer, or medical professional. The large 12-by-17-inch reflective bed easily accommodates A3 scans, and attaching the included Transparent Media Adapter (TMA 1600) lets you scan transparencies up to 12 by 16 inches--including X-rays. Other great features include 3.7 maximum optical density with multiple sampling to reduce random image noise. A triple interface with FireWire, USB, and SCSI-2 provides maximum connectivity; and newly designed templates accommodate a wide variety of film. Microtek includes a one-year warranty that covers parts and service.

This is the scanner used for American Art Archives September 15, 2005 Thomas Clement (Left Coast, Lost Angeles) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is the scanner used for American Art Archives I've had this scanner for nearly two years now (it replaced a SCSI Microtek that did fail after several years of intense use). I'm using it on a Macintosh G5 dual 2gig, mostly for Photoshop, web, and OCR. It's much faster than the SCSI version and running with a fast Mac, there's no hicups in any foreground applications while scanning at 300 dpi (the only setting I need). It's not unsual for American Art Archives do to 50 scans in a day. The Microtek just keeps on keeping on. My one quibble is that the Scanmaker software has a few nagging interface oddities, like not being able to just hit enter/return to start a scan. Also, it's best to overview each item before scanning as if you just scan page after page, even if each page has similiar images, the software blows out all images after the first scan. What's up with that? If you need a workhorse that can do tabloid and works with OSX, check this unit out.
great scanner for small business pror January 28, 2003 Sherry Russell (Albemarle, NC USA) 10 out of 26 found this review helpful
Microtek is a great company with a great product! I recommend this scanner for the professionals who need a larger scanner without the larger price.
Nice equipment - software?? April 29, 2008 Larry V. Ruegger (Safety Harbor, FL USA) The scanner hardware has been excellent and functions as advertised. The acompaning software is another story, if not for Adobe Photoshop being included I may well still trying to figure out the software. Most of which I still have not used - everything is done with Photoshop.
Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Scanner May 16, 2008 G. Reynolds (So. California) The Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Scanner fast, easy to use, and quiet. I use it with a MacPro and VueScan software ([...]). I also bought the Transparent Media Adapter. I've scanned 4X5 transparencies and large flat art posters (in sections) and everything matched up perfectly.Plug and play... it was done. I owned a SCSI Microtek ScanMaker III prior but the cost of a SCSI card for the new Macs and the lac resolution and speed I had to upgrade. I'm glad I did.
