Great Drive For a Reasonable Price January 5, 2008 John D. (Bay Area, CA) 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
I bought two of these (750GB) to replace a failing drive and to be more responsible about backups. I have some complaints, but overall I really like them. Pros: great case, good size (a largish paperback; slightly narrower, lower and longer than my Mac Mini), on/off button, small adapter with a regular plug, no fan, relatively low light output from the front indicator. Cons: louder than other fanless drives (compared to the Seagate eSATA 750), ambient light flickers with drive activity (I'd prefer a constant light). Depends: only has USB. In my opinion, online images make it look bigger than it is. Check the dimensions. The smooth black case lacks prominent logos. They can be stacked, but only two. I assume this is for heat dissipation reasons. Why only 4 stars? Lacie's advertising claims it is "near-silent". Close, but not quite.
Overally good yet needs to be better to be the sole back up drive, 3.5 stars April 29, 2008 A. Can (New York) 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
I have bought this drive over a month ago. The first item I have bought turned out to be DOA. I have called the customer service and could not be happier, they were lightning fast to take my call. If you have any problems, my suggestion would be to call them. However, since I bought the drive through Amazon, I decided to take advantage of their exchange offer which I thought would be faster. Second drive arrived very quickly. As of today, I have been running this drive 24/7 most of the time (most drives die within a few months if they have manufacturing problems - I wanted to initiate kind of a "burn" test to see if anything was wrong with it) and I have not had any problems with it. With all this said, I am not a big fan of Samsung drives which this unit contains. And the fact that the first drive was DOA just made me a little more nervous. I can not rely on this as my sole back up drive. I keep my precious data on my 320gb Maxtor which has endured many 3-4 feet falls over the span of 5 years and this Lacie serves as a 2nd back up. Unit runs relatively cool and quiet, just remember to put it on a solid surface because the bottom is responsible for heat dissipation. For example, if you put it on your bed, it will turn into a fireball pretty quickly. Case looks very cool, and keep in mind that all external drives are more prone to failure than internal drives. I suggest you buy this through Amazon thus allowing you to exchange/return easily if you have any problems with it. As for me, I wait before if this thing lasts a few trips in a luggage and runs 24/7 for another 3-4 months before I upgrade it to keep more important data.
Beautiful & solid design October 10, 2008 gee three pea oh-a (WI USA) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This was purchased as external backup - it's quiet and lovely. The blue LED reflects off the surface (desktop) so you know when it's in use. Easy to use backup software included, but not robust enough for a power user or tech-geek (use cobian!). The USB cable is kinda short, about 8", so if you're not planning on placing this directly next to or on the box you're backing up plan to purchase or use a different USB cable.
Do NOT buy this model March 24, 2008 Vinci 12 out of 26 found this review helpful
This the third Lacie drive I bought. But this model (301302U) is really bad. I decide to return it. A: the top and sides of the drive case were actually made of plastic-like material. In my opinion it is too soft for a disk case. The most important thing is that the plastic box is very very poor for heat dissipation. The bottom of the case, which is made of metal, is supposed to undertake the job of heat dissipation. But it does NOT work well. After few minute, the disk will be very hot. B: the disk is NOT pre-formatted and it is not ready for use at once. The introduction of this product has lied on this very important point! When you connect this drive to your computer for the first time, the drive need be formatted. There is a preloaded software "setup assistant", which should be run to format the disk. But this poor "assistant", which should be fired, does NOT work on my PC laptop. I tried on another PC, it didn't work either. This software may work on Mac, but it definitely does NOT work on my PCs. So, the statements of "the drive is pre-formatted for use across Windows and Macs, doesn't require any additional drivers, and is ready to go seconds after being removed from the box" in the introduction are totally untrue! C: the cable of the power adapter is very thin and un-shielded. It is even poorer than the power cable of my razor. I can't imagine how I could trust this product to backup my data. D: the USB cable is also of very poor quality. It is thin and short. I'm not sure whether it is shielded or not. The plug and the outlet of the USB fit very loosely. This is really not good for data transfer. I said the USB cable is short. It is even shorter than that of my mobile drive. So, it can't not be used for my big desktop at all. E: you can't imagine that the customer support is also poor. I can't find any really useful information about this product on the LaCie website. When you try to post a question, you have to register. After that, you have to wait and wait for answers. My suggestion: don't be fooled by the stunning appearance, especially the charming blue light. This is a bad drive poorly designed. And do NOT buy this model.
Reliable June 21, 2008 J. K. Rd (Tampa, FL) 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
So far, this has been a fairly reliable add-on to my system. Vista added the drivers automaticly and it seems to be working rather well. The transfers from drive to drive are a little slower than I'd like but over all a good buy for the price.
