Reliable Home Backup October 24, 2008 Fritz Mesedilla (Los Angeles, USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have recently bought two portable drives: 1) Western Digital WDME1600TN My Passport Essential 160GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Midnight Black) and 2) Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Intense Blue). I was impressed with the reliability of the portables. I have no problems with them but I was still running out of space. So I wanted to purchase another external drive. I wanted to try other brands that I've used before. Seagate and Maxtor both came out with 640GB capacity external drives. I checked out Seagate Freeagent Xtreme 640GB 7200RPM USB 2.0/SATA. But I felt it was too expensive for my simple home backup use. Maxtor also offered One Touch 4 Plus 640GB 7200RPM USB2/FW400. I was about to forget the 3 Maxtor drives that broke down on me when my friend came to the store. He was there to buy another drive because his current Maxtor drive broke down. I have nothing against Maxtor because I have always relied on Maxtor for my personal and office use but with the recent bad experiences that I've had with these drives, I think it's best that I avoid them for the meantime. Eventually, I came back to Western Digital. Western Digital My Book Essential 640GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (Midnight Black) was the right size I wanted for the small price. My Book Essential came with several softwares: 1) Memeo AutoBackup (30 Day Trial) 2) Memeo AutoSync (30 Day Trial) 3) Google Desktop 4) Picasa From Google 5) Google Toolbar But for my simple purpose of a home backup, I didn't install any of the packaged softwares. Overall, Western Digital's My Book Essential is very impressive and reliable. And it still has the slick look of my other Western Digital Portable Drives.
Good Purchase November 25, 2008 Dr. Barry L. Kayes (Philadelphia, PA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Works well. Compact, easy to use. Only complaint: included software is trial only (30 days) & must be purchased at additional cost thereafter. Product should include non-trial software program compatible with product.
Flawed usb design? November 29, 2008 B. Wong There are a couple major gotchas with this mybook. 1. The USB port somehow struggles to remain connected. It recognizes the device and then loses connection. Is the same hooking up to the motherboard direct or via a USB-hub. 2. When booting up windows XP (older versions pre-SP2) the OS may stall and take an unbelievably long time to come up if this USB device is connected to the machine. I tried this on an Abit and Tyan motherboard with the same issue. So plug this in only after the OS has booted up. 3. Performance is mediocre even for a USB device. I really think the harddrive is underutilized. 4. To make sure this device works better, you are better off plugging it to the wall. Don't plug it into a powerstripe, even if you have a great one. I am still wondering why this matters?? But it does.
