Slow focusing; not sharp; dissapointed October 28, 2005 J. Toews 19 out of 27 found this review helpful
I bought this lens in May for my brand new Rebel XT. I used it on a vacation mainly, and am pretty dissapointed. I'm no pro, or even skilled amateur, but I do know the lens is not giving me quality shots. The autofocusing is slow, and af or manual shots aren't very sharp at any zoom. There seems to be a fingerprint on one of the inner lenses that indicates poor quality control to me. I wanted a good, all around lens before building a real lens collection of different types. I guess this would fit the bill, if it took sharp pictures. I wouldn't pay more than $150 for this lens again.
I dare you to find a better lens for the price! April 27, 2007 Philip J. Prestano (East Nothport, NY) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
you can't find a better lens for the price. some people seem to be let down by the speed and focusing capability of this lens at 200mm or above but it should be expected that if shooting telephoto, the user would incorporate a tripod. I originally thought about buying the tamron 18-250mm but this lens was half the price and although you lose 10mm in the width, you gain 50mm in length. for the few of the people who reviewed this lens and put it on a canon 30d or similar pro digital slr, the question i have is, why would you spend $3000 on a body and $250 on a lens???? it makes no sense! i have this lens mounted on my digital rebel xti and it is a great match. i would love to have a faster zoom lens with this range but i don't want to spend the thousands of dollars needed. if you are like me and enjoy photography, as a hobby and not to make a living, you should buy this lens for it's superior versatility. if you are professional photographer and need superior quality, you shouldn't even be looking at this lens, so please do us casual photographers a favor, and don't review this lens!
Great range but slow focusing and too soft at the long end February 8, 2007 John W. Troxell (Newark, DE United States) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
The 28-300mm (45-480mm on a 30d) has a great range and would have made a good all purpose walk around lens. However, because of it's speed f/3.5-6.3 it was slow to focus and in low light there were times it could not focus at all. Also, while quite sharp on the short end, it lost its sharpness over 200mm. When using in bright sun with dark shadows it was difficult to get a proper exposure. Other lenses I have used did not suffer this problem. Returned and purchased a Canon 70-200mm f/4 which I would give 5 stars.
Great lens for the money September 21, 2005 R. Patterson (TEXAS- The best place on Earth!) 10 out of 25 found this review helpful
I'm just a mom with a really nice camera (the Canon digital rebel) and this lens was a great birthday present from my husband. It has so spoiled me with the zoom! I recomend this for any amatuer - intermediate photographer. Go For It!
Sigma 28-300 DG Macro Lens July 6, 2006 James Stewart (Brick, NJ United States) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Overall a good lens, Focus a little soft at 300mm. The Bokeh is OK. Canon Dig Reb XT auto focus sometimes oversearches. Zoom control is stiff. However, the focal range is great. This is a good walk around lens. I use it 100% now. The F 3.5 allows the chance of precious light at short focal lengths. A very good value for the money.
