Seems great to me- an amateur October 27, 2008

I really like this lens, especiallyat the two extremes of zoom. Having the ability to capture more of the landscape in a photo is great, and there is a surprising increase in size of field of view between 16mm and 18mm. The high end ot he zoom is great for across-the-room party shots and works fairly well for kids sporting events (on a smaller field). That said, I do find myself wishing for a bit more "reach" at the sporting events. That said, the increased resolution of the new cameras give the option for digital zoom that really lengthens the effective zoom of this lens. How much? Beats me as I don't have anything longer for comparison.
It is also a fun lens for close-up nature photography (bugs and flowers, etc.) The detail achieved is pretty cool, especially when enlarged on a 20+ inch monitor.
I am using it with a Nikon D60.
