Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
The Whistler PP300AC 300-watt power inverter provides electrical power from your car, truck, recreational vehicle, boat, or any other deep-cycle battery source. Just plug it into the cigarette lighter to convert 12-volt power to household AC power and run business and household appliances far from the nearest electrical source. This 300-watt inverter is good for use with radar detectors, laptops, and small TVs. It can recharge batteries for laptops, cell phones, and camcorders. The automatic shutdown feature will warn you when the battery is getting low, then shut down before draining the battery, so you can start your vehicle.

Be sure to check the wattage requirements for the appliance you want to use before selecting a power inverter.

4 out of 5 stars Works Well.   August 20, 2002

I have been using this inverter for over a year and have no complaints except the audible noise from the fan. It is regularly used to power a laptop computer, an iPaq power supply, and a battery charger (it has two outlets). It will not work with motors (vacuums, drills, etc.) and I have found a few devices that draw too many amps. It does shut off before your car battery gets too low. Overall - a good buy if you are looking to power appropriate equipment.

4 out of 5 stars A correction for Paul Sachenik from Corning, NY USA   April 1, 2003

I just thought I'd note a misconception in Paul Sachenik's review-- these kind of inverters produce a modified sine wave, which provides an "RMS" (root mean square) voltage of approx. 110VAC. Most AC voltmeters are sensitive to the AVERAGE value of the waveform, rather than the RMS value, because they assume they're measuring a pure sine wave. Because of this, most voltmeters will read 20 to 30 volts lower than the actual output. As for the other problem he had, I WOULD concider that an issue with the product's quality.

5 out of 5 stars Power during outage   April 10, 2003

Good product. I have used mine to power a 13" tv and a flourescent light so I could read during an outage. Note: previous review. It puts out a modified sine wave so a voltemeter will give a lower voltage reading than 120 unless you use a voltage meter that can read a modified sine wave. This is explained in the manual for the product.

1 out of 5 stars Whistler PP300AC   May 1, 2003

The cigarette lighter plug is poorly designed and will blow your fuse. Before using, take the plug apart and tape the insulation in place. If they can't get this right, I wonder what other problems might lurk. It seems to function OK once this defect is corrected - up to about 150 watts. You will have to connect directly to the battery for more. I replaced the cigarette lighter plug with one from Radio Shack and it works fine.
