1 out of 5 stars Not Compatible with 64 Bit Computers   October 31, 2008
The Consultant
This is not compatible with 64 bit computers, and Canon, the Manufacturer does not have an updated version of the installation software present on their website. I want to return the product for the above reason.

2 out of 5 stars Looks just like a fax machine   October 27, 2008
Walt Dangerfield (Low Earth Orbit)
This fax machine would make a great prop for a play or a film, because it looks just like a fax machine. It would also serve well as a large paper weight. This machine is not, however, suited for any environment in which it will be used to send or receive faxes.

When printing faxes, it frequently pulls multiple pages through at once, and promptly stops printing with a "CHECK PAGE SIZE" error that must be manually cleared with the RESET button. This button, of course, cannot be used for RESET while transmitting or receiving, as it is also the STOP button.

Once reset the machine re-prints the page with the "error," often with a few more blank pages and further PAGE SIZE errors. It is not uncommon to end up with four or five copies of the page on which the machine decided to choke. The blank sheets it prints are usually curled from the rollers in the machine, and unsuitable to be put back in the hopper lest they cause it to jam even worse.

The machine also tends to pull multiple pages through the scanner portion when used for fax transmission or the limited copy function. This does not give any kind of error, and the machine will happily transmit the abridged fax without telling you unless you hit the aforementioned STOP button. This is especially annoying when sending longer faxes, and requires the machine to be closely babysat.

When you do hit the STOP button to cancel some action, perhaps after entering the wrong number, or seeing three sheets of your transmission get pulled through the scanner at once, the machine rings a loud alarm and, if you have the transmission receipt option on, prints a failure receipt.

When the machine has run out of paper, or has decided that the paper is too long (by mistaking all the extra sheets it pulled through for a longer single sheet) it gives absolutely no alarm whatsoever, and stores all incoming faxes to memory until RESET is hit.

Let me restate that, so that the absurdity of the design is a little bit more clear: when a user tells the machine to stop, it sounds an alarm to let the user know that it has stopped. When the machine decides to stop entirely on its own, it does so silently.

This means that the machine will often sit quietly for hours, storing incoming faxes in memory until someone thoughtfully checks the tiny LCD screen for any error messages and finally hits RESET.

If you just need a fax machine that looks the part, this one is for you. Anyone who expects a usable office appliance would do better off elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Great if you don't need to fax more than one page.   October 24, 2008
S. Kim
I bought this fax machine mistakenly thinking that a FAX MACHINE would be better at FAXES than an all in one printer/scanner/fax/copier.

I cannot fax more than one page at a time without standing at the machine and manually feedind the pages through, because when left alone, it constantly sucks in two or four pages at a time.

If you build a fax machine - Shouldn't it be able to fax more than one page? Too much to ask?

4 out of 5 stars Great quality printing, a little complicated and slow.   October 5, 2008
Phil Gigante (Yonkers NY)
I traded up my Panasonic FHD351 which I loved and used every day for the last 3 years for this machine. The laser/toner system is far superior in quality and more economical. The machine is a lot larger than the Panasonic transfer film type of machines, but worth taking up the extra space for the added print and fax quality. It works well with a telephone with an answering machine in it, as well as just an answering machine. (Too bad there wasn't an answering machine incorporated in it) The set up is not so easy, and there are a LOT of features and settings that you need to read about to set it up. It is a little slower in response while faxing and printing than I expected, but it is worth taking the extra time. My biggest criticism is that it is not a speakerphone, and when you dial a number with the speaker/ monitor, there is a very long delay in the time from when you hit the number, to the sound of the keypad. It is very annoying and distracting and makes you think you missed a number, and you have to dial slowly to let the sound catch up to your dialing. There is no volume control unless you scroll into data registration/user settings/scroll down to volume, so on and so on. There also doesn't seem to be a default setting to return to, so if you change something, and realize you didn't want to, you have to scroll through everything until you figure out what it was you changed. If you spend the time reading the manual, you will find hundreds of features, but many of them unexplained in the text. (Pauses, ring times, time out,)? Nevertheless, its quality and performance and price make it a good choice, but you will need time to figure a lot of it out on your own. If you need a simple machine with an answering device, speakerphone, and small size go for the Panasonic FHD351. If you want great print/fax quality, this is your machine.
