Amazon.com Review
Make high quality scans of graphics, photos, line art, or text, and get great imaging and optical character recognition software for an incredibly low price—all with the Canon CanoScan FB620P scanner. It's so small, and so cute; the CanoScan seems barely bigger than the documents it scans.

To setup the CanoScan, we attached the parallel cable to our PC (USB is not supported), plugged in the AC adapter, dropped in the CD-ROM, and followed the setup wizard. (If you restart your computer before running the CanoScan's setup wizard, you can cancel the Windows New Hardware Installation wizard that runs automatically.) When you're following the setup wizard, make sure you indicate that you want to install the 620P, not the 320P whose drivers are also included on the same CD-ROM.

In our tests of the CanoScan, we first conducted preview scans of several documents and images just to get acquainted with the scanner. These preview scans and other low resolution scans (75 dpi) were fast and easy, but high-resolution scans were very slow, on the order of several minutes. Still, the images were sharp and clear, and the final scans were comparable to those of much more expensive scanners.

If you're looking for an inexpensive, light-duty scanner that's easy to setup and learn, the CanoScan makes a fine choice. --Mike Brown

Pros

  • Lightweight, small, portable
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • Slow scanning in high resolution
  • Parallel interface only

4 out of 5 stars Great Scanner   November 8, 1999

I bought this scanner after Visioneer scanners wouldn't work with my current laptop. The Canon was a snap to hookup and work with both for color and for text. The size is wonderful - like 1/3 the space of other scanners.

I did some work with a beat up picture (the Adobe software included is great, it'seasier than Photoshop with most of the features). The scanned photo on printed on glossy paper is BETTER than the original.

The scan software could be more like the Visioneer software providing a one touch source to fax multiple pages. The scanner scans somewhat slowly, but this is misleading - many Mustek and Visioneer scanners I've worked with take a long time to 'warm up'. The Canon gets right to work and takes about the same overall time.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible scans!   December 13, 1999

Like one of the other reviewers, I bought the Canon after a Visioneer USB scanner failed to work with my laptop. The Canon was easy to set up, and it does look great, but the scans are terrible. They have a reddish hue and are very blurry. Forty-five minutes with tech support did not lead to a resolution. I'm hoping to cut my losses and send it back. I've heard of several reports of incompatibility with Win98 but in my case this problem was not readily correctable.

4 out of 5 stars Great scanner despite a few problems!   August 19, 1999

All in all, I'm happy with how this scanner works. Unfortunately, the set up in Windows 98 was not as easy as I expected. My first scan came out with an extremely red tint. I called Canon about this problem and the first person I spoke with barely stayed on the phone for two minutes and his solution did not work, forcing me to call again. The second person suggested calling the software manufacturer (Adobe), which I did to no avail, they wouldn't help unless I paid $2 per minute. So, I called Canon again and spoke with someone who knew what they were talking about, and the problem was solved in about five minutes. So, if you purchase this product don't be surprised if it takes more time than you anticipated. It still is a good price and worth a little aggravation. The scans come out great, and I find the scanning takes relatively little time. Highly recommended.

This scanner does beautiful images with very little work. My scans are bright and clear with great detail. Plus, it is the best looking scanner I have ever seen.
