Product Description Protection of your network is a mission critical activity. Linksys builds powerful security into every product to keep your wired and wireless networks safe. Linksys Small Business Series systems have advanced firewall, encryption and authentication features to protect you from network threats - threats that can seriously disrupt or damage your business by stealing your valuable data, slowing down your network and interfering with business-critical applications. Linksys systems ensure maximum application availability enabling you to meet corporate governance and business continuance requirements. The Linksys Small Business Series is the affordable, reliable, high quality networking solution that helps you do business smarter. Secure and easy to install and maintain, it's built to grow with your business. As broadband speeds increase most 10/100 gateways do not have the power to support those higher data rates, and thus become the bottleneck in the network. The RVS4000 10/100/1000 4-Port VPN Router works at Gigabit speeds to meet the demands of today's networks. It features Linksys' proven SPI Firewall with an integrated Intrusion Detection and Prevent System (IDS/IPS). Its built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch can connect up four PCs directly, or additional hubs and switches. The QoS features provide consistent voice and video quality throughout your business. In addition, the RVS4000 features a Virtual Private Network (VPN) security engine that creates encrypted "IPSec tunnels" through the Internet. The IPSec VPN tunnels enable remote users from at home, or on the road to easily, and securely connect to the office network through a typical wired or wireless broadband connection. When used with another RVS4000 or other Linksys VPN router, "branch-to-branch" connections can be established allowing users in a remote office to connect to the corporate network.

Works Great & No Problems Setting It Up March 21, 2007 David A. Lessnau (Niceville, FL USA) 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
I've had this Linksys RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN for a little over two weeks now. I had no problem setting it up and I've had no problems with it operationally. My old Belkin F5D8230-4 Pre-N Router would freeze up every three or four days. This RVS4000 has worked continuously without problem. A couple of very important points, though: - First, there's a firmware update available on Linksys' site (v1.1.09, dated 02/21/2007). Apparently, this update fixes quite a lot. So much so, that after installing it you MUST reset to factory defaults. So, make sure you update the firmware first thing, and then reset. Don't use any old setups. - Also, Linksys doesn't seem to care about U.S. Daylight Savings Time having changed. That new firmware, though released just prior to the change, doesn't use the new dates. So, even though the router has a synchronization option and a DST option, I had to turn those off and set the time manually. - Regarding ease of setup, I'm not using any kind of VPN stuff. I bought this router for it's Gigabit capability over the local network, not for the VPN. So, maybe that's why I had no problem setting it up where other people claim they've had trouble. Or, it could be that the firmware update has simplified things. Overall, I rate this Linksys RVS4000 at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5. If Linksys had changed the Daylight Savings Time settings to reflect the new U.S. dates, I'd have given it a full 5 stars out of 5.
Multifunctioned Gem with QoS and Jumbo Frame Support! November 12, 2006 Perceptive Reader (Ohio) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I am baffled by the other reviewers comments the Linksys RVS4000 router is an advanced, integrated router, a firewall and a 4-port full duplex gigabit switch that will satisfy most home offices and home networks. It is economical as it replaces two devices the router and switch, and offers gigabit speed. Nothing else on the market will do this. The RVS4000 is a gem that supports QoS allows parents to regulate their childrens internet and network access. Heck, the thing even supports jumbo frames unlike a lot of expensive managed 10/100/1000 managed switches; although the MaxFrame feature default is set to 1518 (disabled), and must be manually set to 9600 to get the benefit. Otherwise, the RVS4000 worked great for me.
Poor Feature Set, Horrible Implementation, Poor Support September 26, 2006 Paul (SF Bay Area, CA) 10 out of 17 found this review helpful
This is one of the worst products I have ever purchased. I was looking for a wired, gigabit, ethernet router with QoS and a good SPI firewall. This was the only product I could find. Here's a list of the problems I ran into. I spent hours trying to configure it and had multiple conversations via chat and e-mail with linksys support. Their standard response was: "Hold the reset button down for 30sec to restore factory settings and restart the router." 1. Hosed my Windows XP Workgroup - after I installed the router I couldn't see any other machines on my network. I turned off all the firewall settings and it didn't make any difference. 2. You can have logs and DoS alerts e-mailed to you. You enter an e-mail address and an smtp server. There's no place to enter authentication info for your smtp server. Yahoo and Google both require a user id and password. Linksys tech support had no clue. 3. I couldn't find settings for MAC address filtering. You can setup firewall rules and specify computers that are allowed/not allowed but no place to restrict access to certain MAC addresses. 4. You can't ask the DHCP server to issue the same IP address (based on the MAC address). So if you want the equivalent of fixed IP you need to do that on your PC. That's kind of tough with other devices like Media Extenders and IP Cameras. I could go on. Overall I'm not happy with this purchase and I'm going to see if I can return it. I'm going to back to my DLINK DI-604. This is the second awful Linksys product I've used (after the WRTP54G). I will never purchase another Linksys product again.
Quick VPN setup January 9, 2007 L. Bourgeois (Toledo, OH USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Fairly easy as far as VPN routers go, good directions and intuitive interface. Also pretty cheap considering it has gig interfaces. I set 3 of these up for remote administration and had all of them going within an hour.
DO NOT BUY this piece of Garbage November 2, 2007 Bob T (Ky) 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
An old Linksys fan since 1995. Great success with their products and excellent tech support until circa 2003, after which every Linksys product I had then is still working flawlessly. But I wanted to try VPN, and the RVS4000 seemed the perfect solution. Considering the negative reviews on Amazon and that the only good ones did not relate to VPN, and not wanting to buy something suspicious from Amazon, I paid more to get it from Best Buy. Which means Best Buy will be the one to get it back face-to-face !! THIS THING IS pure JUNK !!! Just getting onto internet was Ok, but it took TWELVE HOURS over THREE DAYS on the phone with Tech support before THEY could "see" the VPN connection themselves. The tech people in the Phillipines(?) were GREAT - very patient, even emailed beta-firmware (1.1.13) which DID make a difference - once we saw the tech notes warning the XP firewall had a defect - which I disabled. So, the VPN server connection was open waiting for a client. Until it shut down all by itself an hour later... solved by powering off/on. THEN, by the time I drove 100 miles to the "client" site, it had shut the VPN down again - all by itself ! Since I wasn't interested in hiring a 24/7 babysitter to reset the router every hour I called tech support - which is what I had been instructed to do if the client could not connect. This time I was routed to India - to three morons in India to be precise - none of whom could speak English or show any sign of an IQ above 20 - and none of whom could figure out why I couldn't just reset the VPN router again (from 100 miles away) and try the client connection simultaneously, and on and on and an hour of repeating myself six times - with long hold periods between each repeat - until I finally ran out of patience. No doubt about it - THIS THING IS pure JUNK ! It seems Cisco has been profiting on the Linksys name while abandoning Linksys quality. I guess that's why those CEO's get the big bucks - finding ways to sell garbage in disguise. I rolled the dice in good faith, no big deal. But now I, for one, know to NOT buy anything with the Linksys or Cisco names or it, and to TRUST Amazon ratings !
