Good product - but difficult to install September 23, 2008 L. Hermann 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I have been using Trend Micro Internet Security for the past couple of years, and it's a good product. My license was up so I decided to upgrade to their Internet Security Pro program, which came out in September 2008. It has extra bells and whistles that improve your computer performance (much like Pitstop's PC Optimize or Norton 360) in addition to internet security and anti-virus protection. The problem came in the installation. Because it wasn't just a simple 'add another year' to the existing license, but moving from one product to another product, the program simply wouldn't install. It hung up regularly during the install process and then automatically de-installed itself and shut down the computer. Frustrating! I checked on multiple websites looking for a solution and tried all the ones I found. I talked twice to Trend Micro support people, and tried what they recommended and their suggestions didn't work either. Here's the list of suggestions received and tried that failed: 1. Running the Trend Micro Uninstall program (the "red-and-white lifesaver" icon) to de-install all previous versions of Trend Micro products that might be on my computer, one after another, and then rebooting the computer and trying to reinstall the program. 2. Uninstalling the program using CCLEANER or the UNINSTALL program in Windows XP Control Panel and then rebooting the computer and trying to reinstall the program. 3. Turning off the Windows Firewall and then rebooting and trying to reinstall the program. What did finally work was to install the program using the CUSTOM INSTALL instead of the AUTOMATIC INSTALL program. The idea came to me from watching where the program hung up when it was installing. It stalled and then uninstalled itself always at the same point in time: after the first round of the install procedure, when the console opens up with the six or seven red dots in a row, and then it installs each of the components. I realized it was hanging up always at the same point - installation of the Firewall. So what I did was a CUSTOM install, where I UNCHECKED "install the Firewall". The whole program then loaded without a hitch - including the Firewall! I then updated the software and am "back in business". I am posting this here because I did NOT find this method on line nor did the tech folks at Trend Micro suggest it - but it works.
What Price Security? October 22, 2008 Phyllis Staff (Dallas, Texas USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I worry about computer security. I worry a lot. So when Amazon Vine offered me this program, I was keen to try it out. I have installed and run it for almost a week. Sometime within the next week I will remove it. There are a number of issues that I find deal-breakers. First and most important, this software has slowed my system significantly. Startup that once took less than 45 seconds to load now takes three and one-half minutes (I timed it!). Following the install, the initial load time took about 15 minutes, my first clue that this program and my computer (running Windows XP) do not work and play well together. Second, this is subscription software. When it expires at the end of one year, you have to pay again for another year's subscription. I find this objectionable. When I get new software, I expect to be able to use it until it becomes hopelessly outdated. While I recognize that an anti-virus program needs frequent updates to stay current, I think that this should be included in the initial price of the program rather than being charged annually. Third, the features such as firewall and virus protection appear to work well, but they don't appear to be better than my previous firewall and virus protection programs. Not being a computer geek, I cannot comment further on the quality of the program's features. The program offers additional security features for files, credit cards, and passwords, but, to me, they are not worth the sluggishness introduced into my system. My system was virus free before I installed Trend Micro Internet Security Pro, and I expect it to remain so after I reinstall my earlier programs. All in all, I found Trend Micro Internet Security Pro a disappointment. It appears to do what it claims, but it adds complexity to my already over-complex system and slows it down. I cannot recommend it. Three stars! UPDATE: If I could, I would reduce the number of stars for this program. Although I had planned to keep it on my system for another few days, I was forced to remove it yesterday. It caused a system crash three times during the initial load. I use my computer daily and keep files on it that I have created; even though I back up my system frequently, system crashes keep my adrenal glands pumping at high levels. Now that I have restored my old security system, loads are quick and accurate. More importantly, I can breathe again. I advise using this program with caution.
limited efficacy against phishing and pharming October 29, 2008 W Boudville (Terra, Sol 3) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Unlike other reviewers, I will abstain from commenting about the installation procedure. I think this has been adequately covered by them. Instead, I want to talk about the antiphishing abilities of this product. They appear to have a blacklist, that comes into effect when you are reading emails or browsing the web. So if you surf to some URL with a domain in the blacklist, then it warns you. Likewise if an email has a link with a domain in the blacklist. So what's wrong with this? A lot. Phishing takes advantage of the zero day attack. Which is the length of time between when a phisher sends out emails with links to her fake website (that pretends to be a bank) and when Trend Micro identifies that website from their surveilling of emails and puts it into their blacklist which then gets downloaded to your computer. It is very nontrivial to get adequate sampling from all the emails that go out every day. If the blacklist is not comprehensive, then the duration of the zero day gets longer, and it is within this time frame that the phisher makes her money by tricking people. They also appear to have some heuristics. In part to get around this zero day problem. So the heuristics try to detect some emails and websites, just in case the blacklist misses them. But heuristics can be very subjective. Especially against phishing and pharming. Unlike spam, these tend to be written in very proper, formal language. Which means that heuristics that detect these also are likely to mislabel real bank email and websites as fake. In Trend Micro's webpage for this product, they say it is "proactive ... against present and future threats". No. The use of a blacklist is inherently reactive. The phisher gets to go first, as explained above. While the heuristics are subjective and error prone.
Good Product--Liberal Licensing May Be Attractive Feature November 3, 2008 TMStyles (California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a somewhat lay user of computer and internet security programs, I have found myself comparing several security suites. As a long time McAfee user, I am appreciating the quality and sometimes the "sameness" of the products. The questions I have decided to focus on are: (1) How easily and how efficiently is the loading process and related to that, (2) How much impact does the software have on the smooth and efficient running of the computer compared with its past performance? (3) Does it do what it says it will do and in an efficient and efficacious manner, and (4) Are there any new risks or problems to concern the user. It seems to me that beyond any significant discrepancies in those 4 questions, the major determiner for the user is brand familiarity or price point. After one aborted effort, I was able to easily install the software by following the instructions. Fortunately, I had no problems like some of the other reviewers on here. I have not noticed a significant slowing of my desktop computer arising from this product but there was drag on my laptop but I am not surprised because of the limitations of the laptop. The Micro Trend Suite does offer a fairly comprehensive package of resources to protect your computer and your identity. Included in this product are identity theft protection, anti-phishing/anti- pharming protections, anti -virus, anti-spyware protection, anti spam protection, and enhanced firewall protection. Whew! Additionally, there are parental controls, WiFi hotspot verification, encryption tools, and an "optimizer" to help clean your registry, disk, and program fragments. So far, all these resources work and seem to work as presented by Micro Trend. Again, my question is why is this product superior to any other protection suite on the market. Certainly they all seem to offer the same resources and protection tools to varying degrees of efficacy and, indeed, many of these tools and protections are available through freeware. I feel this is a good efficacious product that does what it purports to do and contains a plethora of protective tools in one suite...and the bonus may be that fact that it can be used on three different computers under licensing. As I stated earlier, since all the products I have been reviewing seem to be basically comparable in the tools and resources, the user's familiarity with a brand or a desired price point may be the determiner of choice.
Good core product, some extras that are not needed. November 12, 2008 Glenn Ware (Colorado USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have the non Pro version and picked up the Pro version. Overall the core areas of the product are good. The virus protection and parental control are very good for most users. The Pro version tries to add some extra features for more money but I'm not convinced they are worth the extra cost. They are not bad to have but not worth the extra cost and most people probably won't use them or know how to use them. For the core piece of the product which is virus protection, you can't go wrong with Trend Micro. They are a very good virus company and are used in the corporate world as well. So if you are looking for a good virus software with parental controls then stick to the non Pro version. If you feel you need some of the extra features of the Pro then its not a bad price but in the end you may be spending money for things you don't need or won't use.
