AcomDate 250 External Storage Drive - NO problems December 12, 2005 Deb Kadaner 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
I got this firewire/USB PC/Mac external drive for my birthday and use it aggresssively, although have not yet tried the 1 button backup. It handles the volume of jpeg, mpeg, and other files I backup to it. VERY reliable. I am looking to buy another one of the exact unit.
Great Hardware; LOUSY software February 29, 2008 Richard (Danielson, CT USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Here is how I arrived at 3 stars: First, hardware: drive is in a classy, sturdy case. It is quiet, fast and seems to have copied everything without a hitch. Result: 5 stars Second: Software. A nightmare!!! "Pushbutton Backup" sounds nice. Push the button and it backs up. Right?? Not at all. The stupid software was written by a PhD in computer science and covers every type of copying, backing up and duplicating relative to Internet, DVD/CD, Networks and you name it. Somebody please tell me what this means: "Designate a folder as an independent volume for use within Retrospect" That's the instruction you get for a button titled "Subvolume ..." Click it and I have no idea what it does. You can't designate specific folders to copy. The dang program wants to copy your entire files including temporary files and settings. The Instructions are also VERY clear that the Backup operation is very different from the Duplicate operation which is very different from the Archive operation. Get a load of this sentence from their User Guide, " When you set up PushButton Backup, the Button Backup script that is created is set to run Duplicates by default. If you want to run Backups instead of Duplicates, first complete this section, then go to the next section: ..." What the f***k!!! The result is that I used Windows Explorer to copy only the folders I want backed up. Software: 0 stars Total result: Decent hardware, throw away the software and use Windows Explorer; 3 Stars final tally One more comment: They should tell you to NEVER, EVER shut the thing off while your computer is on. I did, and it became corrupted! After a panic call to customer service, the only thing to do at that point is to Re Format and RE COPY all the files you want to back up.
Don't Waste Your Money August 18, 2008 D. Williams (Birmingham, AL United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Mine crashed after about a year and 1/2 for no apparent reason and support from Acomdata. They told me to go after the store who sold it to me. I have another Acomdata that has yet to crash and I am throwing in the trash just in case. There are too many similar products in both price and specification to take a chance on this very poor product.
Great for PC, not for Mac February 19, 2007 Rob Ippolito (New York City) I bought this item over Christmas and had problems booting it up from the start. I had to reboot my iMac into Windows to reformat it and then reformat it again under Mac OSX so Mac OSX would not recognize it. After I reformatted it, the performance was sketchy at best. Sometimes my iMac would recognize it and sometimes it would not. Huge disappointment and it's too late to return it. No problems under PC though.
It died within one year October 9, 2008 S. Kawakami (MA) What the @#*%# ?? I purchased a 150GB version less than one year ago. It died on me yesterday, taking along 5 years of digital photos and 20 GB of music. Many of the files were located only in this HDD. (yes, I SHOULD be using external HDD for backup purposes only, but of course, I didn't!) I quoted several data recovery services. The quotes ranged from $250 - $2500. ARRRRGH!! A spoke with a co-workers who used to work for a hard drive manufacturer. When I described the symptoms (The HDD indicator light is on, but it does not appear to spin up. No "clicking noise of death") he suggested a few things before I invest the large sums of money with a data recovery service. I opened the external case, disconnected the HDD from the interface PCB and the connectors and took the HDD out. I opened my PC, connected the HDD to the power supply cable....and voila! the HDD started to spin. The problem was with the stuff acomdata designed (it was the power supply. The HDD is sourced from and OEM) The whole thing took 10 minutes. The HDD now resides in my PC's spare HDD slot. Didn't need to install a new driver. The PC recognizes it as before. No $$ invovled. WOO HOO! The moral of the story is...acomdata is not to be trusted (don't cheap out on HDD's!!)....and BACK UP YOUR DATA!
