Amazon.com Product Description Replace your desktop PC with the Toshiba Satellite L355D-S7809 laptop, featuring all the power and hard drive space you expect from a top-of-the-line desktop but in an easily mobile package. Stylishly designed, this Toshiba Satellite features a large, bright 17-inch XGA-resolution LCD (1440 x 900)--perfect for viewing multiple application screens or watching widescreen movies on DVD. It's also great for using as a media center, with Toshiba's Express Media Player enabling you to bypass the system and access CDs and DVDs with a touch of button. The dual-layer DVD RW drive also burns CDs and offers LabelFlash print functionality. A 1.3 megapixel digital web camera built into the LCD's bezel lets you quickly snap photos and participate in live video chats. This notebook PC offers dual-core productivity from its 2.0 GHz 64-bit AMD Turion 64 TL-60 processor. It allows you to easily run multiple programs without bogging down your system, and it features intelligent power management for longer battery life. Other features include a spacious 200 GB hard drive, 2 GB of RAM (4 GB maximum), 5-in-1 memory card reader, 10-key keypad, and ATI Radeon X1250 integrated graphics (with up to 831 MB of dynamically shared video memory). Additionally, this Toshiba notebook is RoHS-compatible, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances. This PC also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: The 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PCas capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.
Each processing core has a 512 KB L2 cache (for a 1 MB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) - Hard Drive: The spacious 200 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1024 MB DDR2) will satisfy many users, but this notebook's two DIMM slots have a maximum 4 GB RAM capacity--perfect for high-end video editing and 3D gaming. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer Labelflash DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 4x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
With the Labelflash functionality, you can burn high-resolution, high-contrast pictures on the label side of DVD discs using the same laser used for data recording. Enjoy transparency and high-quality not found in traditional printable media. All you need is a Labelflash DVD disc to start labeling without a printer. - Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 104-key keyboard--with 10-keypad on the side--and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio This Toshiba Satellite has a 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels (native 720p for high-definition viewing). It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the integrated ATI Radeon X1250 which provides between 128 MB and 831 MB of dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. This is the first chipset product to support ATIas revolutionary Avivo display and video technology, producing the most vibrant images and smoothest video playback ever seen using integrated graphics, and the most true to life image possible for all multimedia applications. This chipset also handles the Windows Vista Aero user interface with ease, and stands up to even the most demanding multitasking environments. This notebook also features an integrated audio card and two stereo speakers. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This notebook has an integrated Atheros 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. Warning about labelflash April 16, 2008 N. Caine (Los Angeles, CA) 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
I love my present Toshiba Satellite, which I use for everything (phone, tv, work, school, etc.), so I ordered this Satellite as an exciting upgrade. I use Lightscribe a lot for labeling my cdr's and dvdr's, and I thought "Labelflash" was the same thing. If this is important to you, you should know that it's not the same thing -- like VHS and Betamax, they are competing standards. Unfortunately, since Labelflash is pretty rare, the blanks are around 3x the price of Lightscribe blanks, and are only available at a handful of on line vendors. In addition, Labelflash uses the dvd laser so there are no cdr labelflash media. I found out just in the nick of time and cancelled my order. But if labeling your media with something other than a Sharpie isn't important to you, then don't worry about it.
Toshiba PCs are among the best! June 3, 2008 Tooliac (Dallas, TX) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Toshiba has a solid build; they are tough & reliable. As a computer professional for over 30 years, I've owned & worked with all major brands, including 'clone' PCs. The top corporate choice in portable/laptop/notebook PCs is TOSHIBA. With new lower prices - especially the current deals on Amazon - this, and many other Toshibas, are an excellent choice. The only concern that I & my employees have is the OS: we prefer MAC OS, but we also use MS-XP and MS-Vista. (the problems with Vista, although some still remain, are largely over-hyped) So, if you're going with the MS operating system, then you might consider getting your new Toshiba with MS-XP and upgrading to MS-Vista later. (Toshiba offers this option.)
good but not good May 15, 2008 Cabanag Mitchum Clyde (seattle,Wa USA) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful

Toshiba sucks April 21, 2008 P. Myers (Alberta) 1 out of 17 found this review helpful
I've used several and owned one Toshiba notebook and they were all cheaply made, cheap parts and terrible performance. After a years these notbooks are garbage, malfunction and freeze like they were 10 years old. Get a Macbook/Macbook Pro/Compaq/Dell or ever a Sony Vaio, all perform better than Toshiba notebooks.
Great Toshiba Laptop for the Price, minor problems June 29, 2008 Sheba (Lancaster, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great 17 inch laptop for under $1000, with some minor problems that may frustrate less technically oriented users. PROS: Great value for price, 17 inch bright monitor, 200 GB HDD, 2 GB RAM CONS: Vista Home Premium (for those who don't like Vista OS), Labelflash drive, only 3 USB 2.0 ports, no PC card slot (Expresscard slot only), driver for Atheros wifi needs to be updated before you can connect to wireless network. This is my second Toshiba laptop, so I am fond of the brand. I was happy to get this laptop for under a $1000 with all the features it has. My first Toshiba laptop was more expensive and came with a smaller hard drive (60 GB), 500 MB RAM, 14 inch monitor and 3 USB 1.1 ports. Now for the wifi problem. This laptop comes with Atheros internal wifi card. The wifi card could not detect my wireless network. I had to connect the computer to a Ethernet cable to download the latest driver from the Toshiba support website. After that it still took several tries to get it to find the wireless network and enter the encryption code for my network so I could connect to the web. I found the experience frustrating enough that I considered packing the laptop up and returning it if I could not get the wifi to work (which is the main reason I wanted a laptop). So far I have had no other problems with this laptop. I don't really care about the labelflash drive issue because I have a printer that can print directly to CDs and DVDs. As for the Vista Home Premium OS, I have not had any problems with it except that drivers need to be updated for Vista. I already own a desktop PC with Vista Home Premium, so I am used to it. I do wish this laptop came with more USB 2.0 ports because I have more than 3 peripherals I want to connect to and they require powered ports. I have a USB hub, but the portable hubs do not come with AC power cords to power the ports so they are mostly useless. I was interested in what was available for the Expresscard slot. There are wireless network cards, high speed ethernet, USB 2.0 (unpowered only), firewire, SATA and flash memory. None that I find very useful. Please note as another reviewer has already stated: This is a not laptop for hard core gamers. If you want a gaming laptop you will need to spend a lot more money to get a faster machine with the top notch graphics needed for gaming. I still recommend this laptop because of the great value.
