Excellent product, exceptional value October 8, 2007 Patrick Madigan (Mesa, AZ USA) 55 out of 61 found this review helpful
I've used prior versions of Trend's internet security (or simply anti-virus) products, and I've found them to be excellent for home and small office use. I have computers running Vista Premium, XP Pro, and XP Home, and easily loaded this version on all three machines. Ignore the reviewer who said it only worked on one computer, that's horse hockey. How does it compare to the others? Well, most of my other experiences have been with Symantec, and I prefer Trend over Symantec. Symantec's corporate edition is excellent for the workplace, and it's saved my bacon numerous times in my past roles as a network administrator. But the home version of Symantec is just too piggish, and the latest version of Symantec's product is just plain annoying (I received a trial version with my Vista machine). I found the Symantec interface to be very unintuitive, like a badly designed web page. That finally blew itself up after 1 month, not because the trial period ran out, but because it's junk software. That inspired me to stick with the tried and true Trend Micro, and I was impressed with how much better the interface was for Trend. Incredibly easy to use and install. I recommend this to all of my friends who seem to think that internet security software is "optional" (then they call me up to come over and fix their computers).
Great protection but S..L..O..W..... December 30, 2007 J. Fuchs (Los Angeles, CA United States) 54 out of 55 found this review helpful
I had Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2005 and thought it was great, once I managed to get a working serial number to register it, but then my employer made me install Symantec anti-virus, which I was never happy with. Finally, several months ago and one new employer later, I upgraded my old TM 2005 to TM 2008 and while I definitely feel more protected, the security comes at a price. I have the TM 2008 loaded onto a high-end Sony Vaio that is about a year and a half old. The TM protection is great -- immediately after loading it the program caught 13 threats that the Symantec program had missed (not to mention that several internet diagnostic programs had missed them as well). TM is easy to configure -- you'll probably have to tell it not to notify you everytime it stops a potential threat, or you'll be receiving non-stop notifications. It catches viruses, spyware, adware -- pretty much everything you don't want on your computer -- without interfering or conflicting with any other programs you may be running. The protection is the best. Now for the negatives. This baby is slow. Really slow. The lag time to connect to the internet is like connecting via dial-up. E-mail takes forever to load. Every program on my computer that requires interaction with the internet takes at least 10 times as long, although happily it doesn't interfere with other programs such as Word or non-interactive games. But it is definitely frustrating having to wait after getting used to the quick response times I normally get with a high-speed DSL connection. One other and potentially more serious problem is that when I try to update my protection the program tells me I am not connected to the internet. I sent customer service an inquiry and got a very fast response. The recommended fix worked, but you have to be fairly comfortable with Windows to do it, so if you aren't comfortable with computers, this could be a problem, one that never happened with TM 2005, nor was the 2005 version this slow. Unlike some people, however, I've never had a problem with Trend Micro's customer service as long as I use e-mail or internet chat. Phone contact is a little more difficult, but no worse than a lot of tech companies. In short, I'm not going to replace this software anytime soon since I feel more protected with it than with anything else, but I do wish Trend Micro would work out the bugs and figure out how to make this version faster. Maybe internet threats have just gotten that much worse in 3 years, but it still seems like protecting yourself shouldn't mean having to revert to dial-up type lags.
Great Product, more than I expected October 23, 2007 Dotti (Missouri USA) 44 out of 46 found this review helpful
First I downloaded this product to my husband's laptop. His Norton AV was expiring, and we both had SpySweeper Antispyware on our computers, and the last couple of Spysweeper updates were causing so many problems with false positives...finding cookies and quarantining them so that we had to re-enter passwords on things like our homepage and Amazon. Pain in the behind. Anyway, after uninstalling the old antispyware and antivirus, I downloaded the trial version...although rated #1 in Consumer Reports, I wanted to check it out myself. It downloaded perfectly, fast and easy, and after updating and scanning, it went to work. PLUS, there was NO CONFLICT with other programs (BitDefender was a conflict with LoJack for Laptops and never did get that resolved which is why he went to NortonAV!) I was so impressed that I ordered the Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 from Amazon, fast service, fast delivery, lowest price by $10. When it arrived, I uninstalled all my old antispyware/antivirus programs and installed it on my desktop. I did the customized install in order to retain Windows Firewall instead of using the Trend Micro firewall (they told me that theirs might conflict with the firewall in our router, so I played it safe there). Again, smooth, easy install. I ran the program update as advised during the install, and the full scan, and it's working great. Catches things that Spysweeper and BitDefender did not catch. One of my favorite things is that it lets me manage cookies easily (not so with the others) and its spam filter works well, catching things that slipped through before. Also it's easy to configure to my liking. I have absolutely nothing to dislike about this program. Then I uninstalled in on my husband's laptop (which went perfectly, not like Michael's complaints below) and reinstalled it from the CD. Same thing....perfect, clean, easy install. Both computers now boot up faster than they ever have. I'd recommend this program, but first you MUST uninstall any other antispyware/antivirus to get a clean install, (which is also true when installing any other brands of antivirus) and also disable other firewalls, or choose not to through their customize option during installation....you can't run more than one firewall, per TM technical support. BTW, right now, since the product is so new, there is a wait time if you call, but they assured me that would improve once they get past this initial new release period. Bottom line: Highly recommend this program.
Wow, what a disappointing, frustrating product! (NOT recommended) November 20, 2007 T. Frankel 31 out of 35 found this review helpful
Oh boy, this product gives software a bad name!! In the cycle of life all things ebb and flow. I switched from Norton's product a few years ago to Trend and was relatively happy. But now, oh have the times changed!! To maintain my sanity, I'l be throwing away my Trend Micro Internet Security 2008. Let me explain: Firstly, I agree with another reviewer that purchasing or renewing this product through Digital River is a nightmare. Don't purchase this software, but if you do, good luck and stick with the fine folks at Amazon. More importantly, like other reviewers (including PC Magazine), I had all kinds of trouble installing this product. To this day after many, many, many, many attempts at working with Trend Micro "support" the product still crashes and parts don't work. What doesn't work? I've had all kinds of trouble with the 'Prevent Unauthorized Changes' feature. When I click the button to show me what changes were found, Trend Micro would simply crash. I completely uninstalled and then reinstalled the software and now the program simply freezes when I click this button. Well, I guess I've made progress:) I just realized that that the software hasn't been updating for over a week. When I try to update manually, it tells me to check my connection. Of course, I have an internet connection and went through all their recommendations in their knowledge base, but the product won't update. I'm sure there is a fix for this, but that leads me to the next and most important reason why you should avoid this product if you enjoy your sanity... What has been the most disappointing aspect of this software has been Trend's horrible, bad, unpleasant, frustrating, etc. customer support. Spent over an hour on the phone with someone who was the typical "please hold" while he read from a troubleshooting script. Eventually, he just told me to completely reinstall the software. Of course my problems haven't gone away. Today I tried to call support again and a helpful recording told me to call back at another time because they were too busy. Email support was absolutely useless as it would take a day or two to get a response only to be sent a canned reply that was absolutely no help. It was as if they didn't even read my detailed comments. After going back and forth with them for several weeks I was at wit's end. Never have been able to reach chat support. The wait is so long I eventually give up. The bottom line: Isn't software supposed to enhance our lives or computing experience in some way? Well friends, Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 has utterly and completely failed to achieve this objective for me.
Trend Micro appears to have a winner September 29, 2007 B. Kurth (Boston area) 28 out of 31 found this review helpful
I haven't bought this product yet, but I have just downloaded and installed the free 30-day trial version Of Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2008 and am VERY pleased with it so far. Running Vista, I have had problems with some security products in the past (including Trend Micro) but it appears they have now corrected those problems with this newly-released product. Frankly, the review immediately prior to mine seems dubious. He submitted reviews for TWO Trend Micro products, claims he purchased them both on the same day, and submitted identical (and very negative!) reviews for both products! Why would he buy a second product from the same company if he was so disappointed with the first one?? He panned both Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 AND Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2008. I smell a fish. What I found was that the free 30-day trial version of Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2008 installed flawlessly and has a VERY clear user interface. It detected and removed numerous spy cookies. It scanned my files quickly and found no viruses. No surprise there because I had been running a competitor's product for the past month, which kept my PC clean. I've been evaluating several competing security suites for my new Vista system until I decide which one I want to purchase. ZoneAlarm seemed to work well, as did Bitware. My impression is that the Trend Micro Pro is the most complete of the three, and has the clearest user interface. All three cost about the same. I'll give the Trend Micro another week or so of use and then make my purchase, which at this point I think will be the Trend Micro, probably not the "Pro" version but instead the simpler Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 version. It lacks a few of the features of the "Pro", but they're not features I'm apt to use and it costs about $20 less. Based on my use so far, I really don't have any idea what the prior reviewer is talking about. If you go to the Trend Micro website, there's a link, in plain view, right on the order page which allows you to select whatever renew option you desire - automatic or not - as well as allowing you to select either 1 year, 2 year, or 3 year. And it clearly says "3 user" also, not "1 user" as he claimed. Frankly, his review sounds like sour grapes. Maybe he works for a competing security product? Else why would he submit two identical reviews for two different products from the same vendor, and both reviews claim that he dislikes that vendor intensely??? I don't work for Trend Micro (although I have used their product in the past when I had XP and was pleased with it) nor do I work for any other software security company. I'm just your typical PC user, trying to find a good product for my Vista system. I encourage others to try the free Trend Micro trial products (they offer several versions to pick from) for themselves. But as I said earlier, my impression is that it's now the best of the lot, and I have tried Bitware, Microsoft's suite (I forget what they called it but it was "Onestop" or "TotalCare" or something like that), Norton's version for Vista, and ZoneAlarm, so I have a pretty good basis for comparison.
