 Durability issues - and Nikon D200 users please read this! August 28, 2006

Unfortunately, while on a trip to Asia less than two months after buying this card, it died on me. I was downloading the card contents via a SanDisk card reader, and after getting about 60% of the photos off the card, my laptop said the card could not be read.
I tried two different laptops, and two different card readers, and nothing could read the card. I tried three different software programs designed specifically to rescue card contents, and they all reported that they could not read the card.
Even a low-level system format of the card failed both from the laptop and my Nikon D200.
SanDisk tech support via email was responsive: they told me that there seemed to be some issues between this card and the Nikon D200 (despite the D200 manual specifically listing this card as tested and compatible) and that I should get a firmware update from Nikon. They also gave me instructions on how to format my card under Windows XP, despite having informed them that I am running a MacBook Pro. (Luckily I also run Windows XP on my MacBook, so I was able to test formatting using both operating systems, which both failed.)
I politely pointed out that there is no firmware update for the Nikon D200, and even so, the problem with the card developed while reading images into my laptop, and that trying to format the disk from my laptop failed.
Eventually SanDisk provided me with RMA details and when I return back to the USA I will be returning the card for a replacement.
Searching the Web, there do seem to be intermittent issues between this card and the Nikon D200 - but I must have filled this card 20 times without incident prior to its failure.
When it did work, it was VERY fast.
If you are planning to use a SanDisk Exreme series CF card with a Nikon D200, you should do some Web homework to see what compatibility issues are being reported. You might want to restrict yourself to the 2GB cards until there is a Nikon firmware update; or perhaps the Extreme IV series just released might not exhibit the same issues.

UPDATE: When I returned from Asia, I sent the drive to SanDisk for replacement using a 3-day UPS label they provided via a web link. The package was sent on September 4. UPS attempted to deliver it to SanDisk on Sept 7, but SanDisk asked them delay receipt until the following day for unknown reasons. So SanDisk received it on Sept 8. On September 12, I received two identical emails from SanDisk 15 minutes apart telling me my faulty disk was received. Two days later, I received another email telling me that my replacement disk was being sent -- by UPS Ground!!! From east coast to west coast, this means one week! UPS show that I will receive it on September 21 - Seventeen days after I originally sent it back. This just seems completely unacceptable and inefficient. For $4.05 SanDisk could have sent the replacement by USPS Priority Mail w/ delivery confirmation for less than half the price of UPS Ground, and I would have had in two days, instead of > 1 week. Whilst I am pleased that I am (supposedly) getting the replacement due to me, the replacement process itself, along with the autobot-emails from SanDisk really need some work. I will have been without this drive for over a month now; not really acceptable when you consider it is being marketed as the premium, reliable solution for pro photography.

Contrary to the rating given by the previous reviewer, having a camera that is incapable of keeping up with the speed of the card is not a basis for a mediocre rating on the card itself. I've got an EOS 20D and I find this card much faster than my 512 Mb Sandisk Ultra II card. I highly recommend the card for those with cameras that have a high speed buffer. It allows many more pictures in a burst than the manufacturers claim because they base their estimates on slower cards. This card is well worth the money if you shoot a lot of high speed activities like sports, racing, airshows, fast moving animals, etc.

I thought I was dreaming a nightmare when I read a review that gave 3 stars to this product because of a limitaton in the product it was used in. I have several SanDisk Extreme III CF and SD (1 gig SD) cards, and they are nothing less than rock solid awesome. I use the SD cards in a Canon S2 IS, and a 1D Mk II N. The CF cards live in the 1D pretty much all of the time.
Other companies make pretty fast and durable flash cards, but SanDisk Extreme III cards are the fastest, and damn near bullet proof to boot. In my humble opinion, they are the best you can buy at the present time. If I happened to have an older camera that is limited in it's data transfer speed by virtue of it's vintage, I would still buy the most reliable, and fastest flash media available for it.
The day will come when a new camera tickles your fancy, and it would be a shame to have to discard your current collection of flash cards just because they are too slow to work with your new camera. CF and SD flash cards are here to stay for awhile. They have a lifetime of very active use rated at better than ten years. I can only speak for myself, but in a ten year period, I might buy several cameras.
Go for the best price, but go for the best product too. The SanDisk Extreme III cards cost as little as fifty Dollars per gig, and leave plenty of room for future camera updates.
Fastest Card Yet For the Rebel XT December 29, 2005

This is the fastest card yet as of March 28, 2005. Using the data collected at: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/index.asp in the CF Database. I was able to make a more informed decision. I had my heart set on the Hitachi Microdrive 3GB when initially purchasing my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT 350D. However, after reviewing the results of the write speed tests, I immediately switched to the San Disc Extreme III. For my camera write speed using this CF is 4.888MB/sec JPEG and 6.263MB/sec RAW compared to the Hitachi Microdrive 6GB 3.466MB/sec JPEG and 4.584MB/sec RAW. Check out Rob Galbraith site to help sift through the confusion of which CF Card to purchase for your camera.

Avoid this card if you have the original model of the Canon Digital Rebel. I purchased the card and the write speed is no faster than on my sandisk Ultra II card. Of course, had I done proper research, I would have known that the write speed of the camera itself is limited, and no matter how fast the card is, it will still write at a slower speed.
If you have a newer model Canon EOS then im sure it will be faster.
