Great idea, but not quite ready on the Mac July 6, 2008 DC Mac Guy (Washington, DC United States) I had been looking forward to this item since it was announced in January to add a second screen to my Mac Mini and perhaps another screen to my MacBook. I ordered it quickly when it finally came out. The product hooks up very easily. I installed the DisplayLink drivers (beta drivers from March and current as of this writing) for the Mac and rebooted. It seemed to be functional and picked up my second screen within OSX's screen utilities. The refresh rates were a little slow but as expected given the lack of acceleration at the moment and being a beta driver. However, about a day later my system froze. I was not able to boot into the OS except in Safe Mode. Once I uninstalled the DisplayLink drivers, my system returned to normal. I think the drivers need more work before I will try this device again, but it has lots of potential.
Works great on my PC September 26, 2008 Graduate student (Brookline, MA) I had heard from a few sources that having two monitors can make life more productive and easier, but I've only got a portable, so installing a new videocard seemed out of the question. At home I dock my Lenovo X41 running XP into its base which is in turn connected to a 19" monitor. When I heard this was available, I got another 19" monitor off eBay. I'm no tech whiz, which is why I thought a USB setup was perfect. The part arrived about a week ago and it was very easy to set up. The software installation proceeded exactly as the intructions said it would, and now I've got two monitors to use. I haven't noticed any issues with the refresh rate. Having two monitors is great when you're writing something (e.g., a Word doc) and referring to something else (e.g., a .pdf, Excel spreadsheet, etc.). Or you can just have what you're working on on one screen and email on the other. Anyway, it's great.
