Amazon.com Product Description
The newest generation of its popular Eee PC line, the Asus Eee PC 900 provides the power of a full-sized laptop in a compact body with a larger 8.9-inch screen. Even with the larger size of the Eee PC 900 when compared to the original Eee PC, the new model still weighs under 2 pounds--perfect for students toting to school or road warriors packing away to Wi-Fi hotspots. And because it uses flash memory instead of a hard drive (with 12 GB of storage), the Eee PC 900 is optimal for weathering rough handling and sharing space in overstuffed bags.

The Asus Eee PC 900's 8.9-inch screen is easier on the eyes, and the integrated webcam makes video chats a snap.
Other features include a 1.3-megapixel webcam integrated into the bezel above the LCD, a Secure Digital memory card slot, Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), multiple USB ports, and a VGA output for connecting to a monitor. It comes preinstalled with the Linux operating system, and it's also compatible with the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

For the students and professionals, the Eee PC comes with a powerful selection of software to maximize personal productivity--over 40 built-in applications. The Open Office suite of software enables the user to open, edit and create documents, presentations, spreadsheets and databases that are compatible with Microsoft Office. For journalists, photographers and other professionals who need to use a computer in the field to create, to communicate and to collaborate with other colleagues, the Eee PC's combination of power, extreme portability and rugged build makes it the ideal computing solution.

No technical manual required with the specially designed, user-friendly, and intuitive graphic interface..
It's also a great choice for young students, with a built-in Dictionary that's great for homework, and it includes two modes of intuitive graphic user interface design to accommodate both experienced and inexperienced PC users. The Eee PC also handles your digital images, movies, and music as well as Internet radio.

Nicely light at just 35 ounces, the Eee PC 900 has an 8.9-inch wide TFT LCD with a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution (WXGA)--making it more comfortable on eyes than its predecessor. Under the hood is a 900 MHz Intel Mobile CPU with integrated Intel graphics processor, 1 GB of RAM (not expandable), and 12 GB of flash memory solid-state drive (SSD). The SSD provides quiet performance and helps save energy, while its shock-proof solid state design helps to guard against data loss or shock-related damage if the laptop is dropped.

In addition to its wireless LAN, it also offers wired Fast Ethernet connectivity. The Eee PC includes software for Web browsing (Firefox), e-mail, OpenOffice 2.0 for creating and editing word processing documents and spreadsheets, and a suite of other productivity software to help keep you on track.

You get three USB 2.0 ports, a VGA output for connecting to external monitors, headphone and microphone jacks, and a Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot. The rechargeable battery provides up to 3.5 hours of battery life (depending on usage). It's backed by a 1 year warranty for parts and labor.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect   May 23, 2008

I have been thinking about getting an ultra-portable device for a while and finally decided this was "it".

Ideally, I wanted a sub $500 solution, but this was close enough.

I was looking at the Nokia 800 and 810 for a while, but ultimately decided I needed windows compatibility over size.

Also, I almost got the 7inch version when it came out, but I'm glad I waited. The 1024 pixel width makes ALL the difference when browsing.

I was debating quite a bit between the XP and Linux versions, but decided to go with the XP and get a 16 GB SD for $80. The SD card does NOT stick out from the machine when it's inserted, so there is no problem having it in all the time.

Even though technically there is no reason not to install XP on the Linux (20GB) version, I wanted the piece of mind that if anything should go wrong, I won't have to worry about the OS change.

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the keyboard.
I know it's impossible to have a great keyboard on such a small machine, but to be honest, I type faster on my cell phone's keyboard than my EEE.
I've just had the machine for a couple of days, so I'm hoping that eventually I'll get used to it.

It's great that it really has just about everything a "full size" laptop does (webcam, built in mic, speakers). I wish it had bluetooth as well, but I can get a USB for like $30 if I really need it.

Also, I read that some people (i think in the UK) got the lower powered battery (I think 4400 mah) but this comes with the better battery (the 5800 mah one).

3 out of 5 stars Nice .. except for the screen   May 21, 2008

Even at the brightest setting, this screen is 25% dimmer than the Hp 2133. Also note that it comes with IE6 installed, and the unusual screen size re the weird driver setup causes some web pages to go bonkers (huge text). Going to IE7 or Firefox solves this.

The keyboard is almost unusable, of course.

The Pros are the small size and weight.

See my review of the Hp 2133 and the critical problem it has with the Via chipset.

My conclusion, this machine is, for a secondary, going to meeting type of machine, the better of the two. If HP changes the VIA to an Intel chip, there is absolutely no question that the ASUS would be inferior. Note, however, that the ASUS does OK on its 4 cell...and the HP is somewhat bigger and about 60% heavier (the souped up model is well over 3 lbs, despite the adverts).

<<<<<< Update June 7 >>>>>>

Asus has just demonstrated the eee PC 1000. It has 7 hours of battery life, a larger keyboard, and is about 1.75 inches wider.

Using the Atom chipset (as does the 901) it looks promising. Initial pricing estimates put it near the Hp 2133 at $750, however. I saw the 901 takes a ca. $80 price hike over the 900.

2 out of 5 stars Go for the 20G Linux one   May 21, 2008

I bought this 12G Asus EEE PC when I had business trip in Taiwan. Every thing works fine, and I enjoy it a lot due to improved screen size comparing with 1st generated EEE PC. However, the SSD size is a pain. It comes with 4G one for OS and another 8G one for users to install other softwares or storage personal files. It's not enough for sure.

We can use SD card for extra storage, but that's another $80 for 8G SD card. You also need to plug in and out the SD cards when you want to copy pictures from another SD (Camrea uses one). It makes way more troubles, so I returned it to the store next day and got another 20G Linux one.

The linux 20G Asus EEE PC is way better, it's 4G + 16G SSD. You will get another extra 8G, which will make you smile. It's very easy to install Window XP into the system. The key is change "OS Installaion" from "Finished" to "Start" in the BIOS.

You can easier to buy Window XP Home from the market around $90 or Window XP PRO from the market around $140. The CD also includes the Windows drivers, even you buy the Linux 20G Asus EEE PC. Therefore, you don't need to worry about Window XP drivers.

I guess the reason for Asus to use 12G instead of 20G for Asus EEE PC 900 with Window XP Home due to the Microsoft license cost. If you don't mind to pay for the extra Window XP license fee, it will get you extra 8GB internal SSD space. You will enjoy this EEE PC more.

Suggestion:

Go for the 20G Linux one!!! (

I also ordered another Linux 20G one for my wife on Amazon.com. Hope they will ship it out soon.)

5 out of 5 stars This little gem is amazing!   May 22, 2008

I've been using laptops since 1995. I bought a 16 GB SDHC card for $79 Transcend 16GB SDHC CARD (SD 2.0 SPD CLASS 6) with Compact Card Reader) when I bought this amazing computer. It gives me a total of 28 GB hard drive space. The trick is to install whatever software you can to the E drive (SDHC). An SDHC card plugs directly into the SD port without an adaptor -something my full size notebook computer won't do.

I do a lot of photo editing with programs like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro and a bunch of plug-ins. I installed Paint Shop Pro and 5 different plug-in programs on the EEE 12G model. The screen is a little small but portability is the reason I bought this gem in the first place.

I use a small portable optical USB mouse. It works better for something like editing photos.

I've got Street Atlas USA 2008 installed on the SDHC card and my USB GPS works fine with it. Having 3 USB ports makes the EEE quite flexible. I've also got a 160 GB portable USB hard drive so I can use it for storing photos and large documents.

There isn't a thing the EEE won't do. It make take a little longer than your regular computer but this is a great computer to stick in your briefcase or even a purse.

I highly recommend it.
