5 out of 5 stars Works great...!!   January 9, 2006

** Update on 8/20/2006 **

Not sure why Amazon doesn't allow me to change the numbers of stars on the review. Well, I need to, because I am kind of disappointed after using this for a few months. The keys on the keyboard have become kind of stiff. Two keys (8 and o) work only if I am lucky. At some point, they completely stopped working. I submitted an RMA request to Belkin (yes, they have an online form for that), but they haven't responded after a month. Anyway, the keys started working sporadically afterwards, and I don't use it much, so I didn't bother to follow up with Belkin on the RMA. But, I am not sure if this is a product that I want to recommend to anyone.

** Original Review **

Installation was easy and straight forward. In the picture, the right portion (the numeric pad) is part of the base that is connected to a USB port. The left portion (the alphabets part of the keyboard) rests on the base for charging and can be removed for wireless operation.

The wireless keyboard works on RF which means it doesn't have to be in a line of sight with the PC. It works very well upto 30ft. The universal remote (of course) uses IR. I haven't really tested this part.

The mouse is on the top end of the keyboard with the track ball on the right and the click and scroll buttons on the left. It makes it very convenient to hold and operate. The track ball needs a little getting used to.

Overall a good buy for a PC connected to the home theater.

4 out of 5 stars Using it now to write this review...   July 16, 2006

The keyboard works very well on a Mac Mini and LCD tv, does not interfere with any of our other wireless networks, the interface of the system preferences dialogs are very good and allow for quite a bit of fine-tuning. We use it primarily for iTunes and iPhoto.

Complaints:

Forget about the A/V stuff, the codes were last published mid-2005 and customer support told me they don't have any newer codes than that. There are no codes that work with any of my components - I can't even control the power on/off on any of them. It would have been wonderful to replace the 5 remotes we have with this keyboard, instead of essentially adding yet another one.

The mouse is a bit funky - it only travels in eight directions (up, down, left, right, and at 45 degree angles). It is not easy to be precise with it, but the control panel for it makes it easy to fine-tune the speed etc, and the scroll wheel works well. I would vastly prefer a single touchpad as on a laptop, but the two-handed mouse and click works ok.

It doesn't always sit well in the charger and sometimes requires fiddling to get it to charge, but so far the battery etc seems to be working great (after a month or so of daily use).

I'm surprised there are so few choices in wireless keyboards with integrated mice - I can only guess there are more to come on the market as people use them in their living rooms as we do. I'm also surprised that this one works as well as it does.

2 out of 5 stars Key problems left and right   February 7, 2007

The other reviewer is right about stiff keys. Initially I had one key get completely get stuck, plus that the trackball would not move in one direction. Belkin replaced the unit without any questions asked (no RMA problems for me), but the new unit is occasionally very stiff. It takes more force to press keys than a good keyboard should need.

The most annoying problem is that occasionally keys get dropped. I can type fine for a whole day, and then there will be a minute or so where keys are simply ignored. You can hit them ten times and only one gets through.

It's a pity, because this is the only wireless keyboard that I could find without hex keypad, which I need for space reasons.

Btw, this review is for the MediaPilot product that works over RF. Amazon lists two very similar Belkin keyboard that both look like mine.

4 out of 5 stars Good keyboard/mouse, bad A/V remote control   January 20, 2006

It works out of the box with linux, three button mouse with scroll wheel is good. The A/V remote control function works but will not replace a universal remote:

Only limited device support: my sony receiver is not supported

No direct channel number input, no video selection

Only F1-F12 can be programmed for A/V

1 out of 5 stars So-so keyboard, terrible mouse   September 1, 2006

While the keyboard feels a little cheap, it's passable. The mouse, on the other hand, is terrible. The cursor moves too slowly (even if you crank up the sensitivity) and fine adjustments are very difficult.

Additionally, the keyboard is very awkward to hold when it's not docked. It feels like ergonomic/comfort tradeoffs were made to make it dockable. Since the whole point is to use it wirelessly the dock seems unnecessary -- I'd much rather have a good wireless keyboard that doesn't dock than an uncomfortable one that has a docking mode I never use. It feels like the product didn't get the user testing it really needs, especially around the pointing device integration (button placement, mouse sensitivity).

While I really like the idea of a rechargeable, RF keyboard, I'll be switching back to my older, IR based SK-7551.
