The HP LaserJet 1018 Printer is an incredibly affordable LaserJet printer that delivers a simple, compact design and reliable, consistent results at an ideal price for personal users.

Features
Affordable quality

  • Step up to HP LaserJet printing. It's never been more affordable to own HP quality—the HP LaserJet 1018 printer creates impressive printed pages and is priced just right for personal use.
  • Meet all your personal printing needs. A 150-sheet input tray, a single-sheet priority input slot for specialty paper, and a 100-sheet output bin provide the flexibility to print the documents you need. The printer supports plain and specialty paper up to legal size, as well as envelopes, transparencies, card stock, postcards, and labels.
  • Print quickly. There's no need to wait while the printer warms up—you can print a first page from PowerSave mode in less than 10 seconds.1 Complete your printing jobs fast, at speeds of up to 12 pages per minute (ppm) letter.

Space-saving design

  • Conserve space. Why give up more desk space than you need to? It's easy to find just the right spot for your printer. Its sleek, compact design makes it an ideal fit for any desktop, shelf, or other small, convenient spot.
  • Look like a pro. Genuine HP LaserJet print cartridges are designed for reliable, precise operation to provide crisp, sharp text and lines every time you print. You refresh your printer's imaging system every time you replace an HP LaserJet print cartridge, giving you hassle-free printing.

    Simplicity

    • Just plug it in. Focus on getting your work done instead of learning to use a new device. Convenient, Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connectivity lets you set up in no time. With support for Windows 98 SE, Me, 2000, and XP 32 bit, the printer fits right into your existing environment.
    • Accomplish more. The host-based print driver quickly translates application output into high-quality print images. The driver uses your PC's processor and memory rather than the printer's, which lets you print more complex jobs without the cost of additional printer memory.
    • Easily access, replace, and order supplies. Carefully designed together with the printer, the HP LaserJet print cartridge is simple to use, featuring HP Ultraprecise toner and the imaging drum in one unit. Print cartridge installation and replacement is quick and convenient.

    1. In addition to fast ppm speeds, most HP LaserJet printers include Instant-on Technology, which delivers a first page out from PowerSave mode in industry-leading times, according to Quality Logic Printer Performance Test Reports from August 2005. The technology utilizes an innovative, quick-heating fuser system that virtually eliminates warm-up time.

    5 out of 5 stars A good economical choice   September 16, 2006

    This is a quick, quiet machine, and so far it works for me. A relatively new model, I was told it was the replacement for the 1020, but I'm not sure that's the case. In any event, it is extremely simple to set up and operate, and it doesn't take up much space. It's a big improvement over my inkjet, an HP deskjet 960c. I figure my cost is about 5 cents a page. So far, highly recommended.

    UPDATE: 10/25/07 Over a year later, this little no-frills printer is cranking away as problem-free as when I just set it up. I'm a teacher and give it a pretty regular workout each week--easily 100-150 copies. I can't be sure, but I think I paid more than what it's selling for now. If and when it wears out, I'd buy the same model in a flash. Great value for the money.

    4 out of 5 stars Not the best printer, but worth the asking price   November 12, 2006

    This printer is okay, but I was disappointed to learn that:

    * It has no parallel port. It seems that most modern printers only connect via a USB port. That's a real problem if you're using a DOS based word processor, because DOS programs don't recognize USB ports. So you must go through all sorts of computer hoops and patches, and find drivers, to work around it. If you can even do that.

    Of course, this should not be an issue for most users. But if it is, then be aware of it.

    * The tray only holds 150 pages. When it runs out of paper, it stops printing. And unlike the older HP 5P, when you reload it with pages, it doesn't automatically start printing again. You have to hit the "Retry" command via the computer.

    * The tray is uncovered, so the pages collect dust.

    * This 1018 is of flimsier build than older bottom-rung HP laser printers. It seems that HP is now targeting the low-end laser market, with more cheaply built printers.

    Of course, those older bottom-rung HPs weren't cheap. My first laser printer was the bottom-rung HP 2P, which I bought in 1990 for $900. It was still working in 1995, when I traded it in for an HP 5P -- which cost nearly as much and is still going strong.

    I don't expect this HP 1018 to last as long, but it's still a good buy. It includes a print cartridge, which is a $90 value -- so it's like buying a cartridge and getting a printer tossed it for practically free.

    Some people have complained of its slow speed, but until now I was using the HP 5P which runs at 6 ppm, so the 1018's 12 ppm seems very fast to me.

    I only wish this 1018 had a parallel port. Since it doesn't, this HP 1018 will supplement my HP 5P.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent, inexpensive, but...   November 5, 2006

    Excellent printer, very inexpensive, set up in 3 minutes, runs like a champ, very quiet, almost jam-proof, quiet small. The only wrinkle is in the small print: you need a USB printer cable (does not come in the box) and if you don't own one, be prepared to trot out to your local Staples to buy one if you want to use this puppy.

    Other than that minor annoyance, I remain very impressed that a printer I would have expected to pay $1,000 for just a few years ago can be had for so little, and in such a small package today.

    Pros: price, speed, quality, simplicity, size
    Cons: no cable included, holds only ~150 sheets in tray

    Price/Performance - about as good as it gets.

    I am impressed by the performance of this machine, for the following reasons:
    - easy to set up;
    - very quiet;
    - prints smoothly;
    - manual duplex printing is a breeze;
    - compared to my previous HP laser purchased some years ago that often got paper jam, this one is a real improvement.
    My Kudo to HP for a job well done !!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Not For Macs   January 19, 2007

    While I am sure this is a great printer for the price, it will not work with Macs, despite what an employee at a large computer chain told me. There are no Mac drivers for the 1018 and none of the work arounds listed on the net seem to work. I had to return this printer to Amazon and ordered the HP 1022 that is Mac compatible.
