Changes you make on one device are automatically sent to a secure online server, the MobileMe "cloud," and back down to your other devices, keeping them all in sync. MobileMe works with the native applications you use every day--Microsoft Outlook on a PC and Mail, Address Book, and iCal on the Mac. Access your email, contacts, calendar, photos, and documents from anywhere with a suite of elegant, ad-free web applications at me.com. • Automatic sync.
MobileMe stores all your email, contacts, and calendars on an online server--or "cloud"--and syncs them to your iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, and PC. When you make a change on one device, the cloud updates the others. The sync happens automatically and continuously. You don't have to wait for it or remember to do anything--such as docking your iPhone and syncing manually--to stay up to date.

(Please note: Updates between me.com and iPhone or iPod touch will occur in a matter of seconds; updates between me.com and Macs running Mac OS X Leopard and Windows PCs may take up to 15 minutes when MobileMe is set to sync automatically. Macs running Mac OS X Tiger may experience longer sync times.)

  • Works with the native applications you know.

2 out of 5 stars This is a step back from .mac   July 18, 2008

I am writing this review over a week after the launch. I have been a user of this service since this was called iTools back in the very first days of 2000. Back when Santana and Rob Thomas were making Smooth music together. BTW, it was also a free service back then. Times have changed and Apple now charges $99 and we have only a few more features. The so-called push technology that Apple was promoting is not push.

It actually takes 15 minutes to sync on your home macs. Also, you can no longer create groups. Sometimes, you can't even edit them. So far, the service is spotty. This was one of the best features of .mac. You can still edit any you have now when the service works, but Apple has stated no new groups can be created. All current users should get a refund because we paid our money with the belief we would get all the services for a full year. Also, it appears that homepage is not going to be supported for much longer. It works now but it appears that both Groups and Homepage may disappear like water in a desert. The so-called push technology is not enough to win over many new converts. With what they are taking away and adding it seems that the only viable product here is email and $99 a year for that is robbery. The ability to sync all my contacts, ical, and email on my mac and an iphone will be great once everything works correctly. I just wish they would have beefed up the Groups and Homepage features and not reduced their usefulness.

1 out of 5 stars MobileMe promises everything, does NOTHING   July 14, 2008

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT UNTIL YOU HAVE TRIED IT FIRST. Apple currently allows you to do a 60 day trial before you purchase; I'm glad I tried it first. It was only released a couple of days ago, and nothing works. E-mails are duplicated when you delete them, calendar events dates are changed by a day, features that were advertised with the iDisk function are being removed by Apple, logging in works / doesn't work / works / doesn't work, and syncing either works, doesn't work, or can lag on and on. I consider myself to be a more advanced computer user than the general population. This has to be one of the lousiest pieces of software I've ever used. I WANT it to do what it says, but it just doesn't work plain and simple. I can't believe this is an official piece of software from Apple! Don't believe me? Visit the official Apple support discussions for MobileMe and read about all of the problems for yourself.

***Edited on July 25th*** Well, Apple has now added another 30 days to the free trial because of all of the problems (which now gives you a total of 90 days). Amazon has dropped the price, the reviews are averaging 1 star, and Apple's customer support is non-existent. I've called Apple technical support only to be told that they don't support MobileMe over the phone. I then e-mailed them 3 times and each time got links to the support webpage after 3 days of waiting. More items are working, but it's still buggier than all get out. Some things that still don't work are being able to access your address book to e-mail contacts, unable to add a field when adding contact information, deleted e-mails popping back up, messages are labeled as "unable to send" but send anyway... etc, etc.

1 out of 5 stars If you want reliable email, stay far away from MobileMe...   July 21, 2008

I have been a fairly content .mac customer since 2002... a few problems here and there, but overall, it hasn't been bad... until NOW...

The MobileMe transition has been horrible... I, along with many others (check the discussion boards over at apple), have had no email for days and days now... This is completely UNACCEPTABLE...

Upon complaint of the lack of email service, apple throws this in your face: "The Service is designed for personal use and not intended to be used for commercial business purposes, including, but not limited to, transacting online sales or software distribution via an e-commerce site."

So... it seems clear that MobileMe is a "hobby" and not intended for serious users...

and I won't even bother to describe how horrible the "push" service is... How it won't sync birthdays to the calendar in my iPhone... How some contacts have mysteriously just disappeared or have lost data...

Stay away from this product! Just go get a FREE gmail account, it is much more dependable!

1 out of 5 stars Apple's VISTA   July 22, 2008

Theoretically, a great idea - and I have been a .mac subscriber since 2004 - but mobileme was either rushed out or the folks at Apple have hired a bunch unemployed VISTA engineers - or maybe both - this thing really stinks - I have been unable to get any email for 5 days and counting - the sync is unreliable - works great on their ad - but not so well in the real word - and now it appears that the issue is spreading to ichat - unable to log in there - Apple should have introduced this over time and not migrated all of the .mac accounts over at the same time that the G3 iphones were introduced - VERY unApple like - pretty, pretty, pretty poor.

I've been a Mac geek for years. I have always tried to convert people. This one program has soured me to Mac for a long time to come. Their head-in-the-sand attitude is perhaps the most ostentatious business decision I have ever seen. Not only have they done damage to individuals and businesses who rely on data, they REFUSE to acknowledge they are at any fault. They continue to lie on their web page about the status of the program, they remove any avenue of normal communication or feedback, and they remove select postings on discussion groups which are critical of their company. Keep your money and go to gmail or yahoo.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
