affordable cutting edge January 9, 2003 Erich Hand (Huntington Beach, Ca United States) 16 out of 28 found this review helpful
We have all seen data gloves used in movies and on television and wow'ed and wished we had something like it. Finally there is a product available that not only looks like something out of a sci-fi show, but actually is affordable. While its suggested retail price may be a bit higher than a mouse, here on Amazon.com it was only slightly more expensive than a high-end mouse. Easy to adjust, the P5 glove, or 3D controller, from Essential Reality is lightweight and comfortable. Soft rubber sensors are held against your fingers and detect the bending of your hand through fiber optics incorporated into the glove's design. The hard plastic back is lightweight and designed for ease of adjustment and calibration. A futuristic receiving panel requires line of sight operation to detect the motion of the device. And while the glove does have to be plugged in and is not available cordless, it plugs in to the receiving panel allowing easy access and freedom from worry about pulling the cable too hard. The receptor requires that the glove be within the short range of three to four feet, so you are not going to be sitting twenty feet back from a big-screen, but you still have some extra leeway for the receptor is provided with a five-foot cord to plug into the computer or game. The glove can function as a mouse for software that is not already set up to utilize the full extent of the data provided by the glove to the computer. Hopefully, you are going to be a right-handed user. The glove does not yet come in a left-handed model. The driver for the glove is easy to install and easy to use providing calibraton for each finger. The glove is currently shipping with three games, including the new and popular Hitman 2 game that is configuresdto utilize the full motion data provided by the glove, allowing six degrees of motion -- the x, y, z axes as well as pitch, roll and yaw. It may take a little getting used to using the P5 after the limitations of other game controllers and mice, but it easy to get used to, versatile and is sure to impress your friends. The only drawbacks that I see at this time are that it is limited to the right hand, requires a physical connection and is not yet available as a cordless controller. Definately worth a try for any gamers though it may not be a mouse replacement for others, it is well worth its modest price and promises to to be fun and impress your friends.
What a waste of money! July 6, 2003 Jake (Quincy, IL, USA) 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
I bought this product about 3 months ago looking for impressive ways to persue the never ending quest to be the badded mofo of FPS shooters. Turns out that this thing is a hunk of junk! It's really hard to get it the glove movement to coorespond with the game or mouse in windows, it isn't comfortable for people with big hands like myself, and it is difficult to use in any type of light. Like the previous person that wrote a review, my p5 glove has been sitting on the shelf in my closet. I played around with it for 2 weeks to get it to work the way they advertised it. It just isn't worth the money! Buy a Nostromo N50 instead!
Peice of... January 4, 2004 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
I'm almost posative the guy who wrote the first reveiw for this works for the company, there is no way this peice of rubbish can be compared to the miraculous peice of equipment in the first review. Its very uncomfortable to wear and you can't adjust it for size at all, it struggles to work in almost all light conditions, in FPS its horribly jumpy and slow to respond to your movments and shots.
Good idea bad product.. May 9, 2003 B. Shlewiet 6 out of 15 found this review helpful
Ok... if you are trying to impress some of your friends with this... you probably will end up making a joke out of yourself... I have had this for more than 2 weeks.... useless for playing games, useless as a mouse replacement.. basically a waste of time and money
