4 out of 5 stars Finally, the universal remote that does what I want   December 17, 2004

I've been looking for a universal remote for a few years - and purchased a few - but they were always lacking something. The Phillips Pronto was not tactile enough, "universal" remotes either weren't or you needed to spend hours trying out remote codes for your 10 year old VCR or your three day old TV.

That ended with the Harmony Remote. After entering the model numbers of my devices (RCA TV (no, not 3 days old), Sony receiver, Mitsubushi VCR (yes, >10 years old), Sony DirecTivo, Sony DVD - Note: spend a little time writing all of this down before you start - Logitech even provides a workbook in the documentation), I hooked up the remote to the USB port on my computer and it worked. It wasn't perfect (user error), but that was quickly fixed.

The true test was having someone who has never operated our equipment before come over and give it a test run and it worked out great.

Things I would note: if you turn on something manually, turn it off manually. It's not perfect, but what is?

5 out of 5 stars A truly universal remote   November 3, 2005

I must say that this universal remote is truly amazing!!!! I have had it now for about 6 months and I am still very impressed.

I have 8 different components - all different brands. This remote has been able to control them all. (Two of the units are multifunction units)

Pros:

*my non-techno savvy boy-friend actually understands how to use this remote to run our entire home theater system.

* pressing one button turns on everything I need for a given activity. It also switches the TV and receiver to the proper outputs

* It even controls my tower fan and my media center computer

* I no longer need 7 remotes

* I can use it to preform fairly complex functions that before I could only do with the original remote from the component.

* The battery life has been excellent

Cons:

*the Harmony database had incorrect codes for my Toshiba HDD/DVD recorder. (However I was able to 'teach' the remote the correct commands.

*buttons are way too small

2 out of 5 stars Nice idea but....   July 8, 2005

I purchased this product to do all the things Logitech claim. Unfortunately, whilst it probably works for some people, it has totally failed to live up to my expectations. My three key issues have been:
1. Programming this device requires selecting devices for which the codes are available in the Harmony online site. Whilst the list available is comprehensive, each device ends up being programmed with all available options including an enormous number of ones that will never be used. This makes using the remote extremly difficult since, with a maximum of 6 options (usually only 4) shown on each screen, many presses of the NEXT key (there is unfortunately no PREVIOUS key in case you miss the one you were looking for) to find what you need. These can of course be programmed out but this requires a tedious and lengthy process.

2. Whilst the codes are downloaded, they often do not match the device intended. I have an old Yamaha surround sound receiver (RX-V1070) and a brand new LG TFT TV (RT-32LZ50) which I selected from available options. However the codes for each of these devices were completely wrong with the receiver showing many more, incorrectly names inputs than my device has. Input selection and control of the TV was also completely wrong.

One of the problems is that manufacturers of these devices use the same model numbers to describe different products in different parts of the world thus an RX-V1070 in the USA is different to that in Australia. There is no international library of devices so if you live outside the USA I recommend you look at other products. Of course there is always the option of "Learning" codes right? Wrong. This brings me to problem...

3. The web interface allows the learning of codes for each key. This may be learned in direct or RAW mode. Unfortunately, every time I tried to learn a code, it would go through the process then dump me to a screen saying "You have discovered a problem with the Harmony website, the systems administrator has been notified" This is a persistent and ongoing problem for me and even though I have tried 4 different computers with firewalls, virus/spam/adware/popup blockers all OFF, it simply does not work. It will however work if you select to learn in RAW mode (go figure!) BUT RAW mode is only available for some keys and not to correct incorrect inputs.

I had a one hour international call with Harmony support (after trying 10 times and being dumped from the system with a "send us an email" message - there is NO option to keep holding) and this was to no avail. They had no suggestions that helped and advised me to keep using the (unsatisfactory) workarounds I had already discovered. They also refused to give me a list of the LG TV's in their library so I could do some research to find a matching USA model. Unfortunately not a customer oriented organisation and I will question all future Logitech purchases.

I have spend about a month implementing workarounds and can now turn on the TV, Amp, STB together and then switch to watch a DVD or a video tape. I still don't have my media player (DSM 320) working as it gets programmed as a Media PC and expects it to have a screen! Probably about another month (of the leisure time I have available) and I may get this going but it has been too much hard work. I really regret not buying a device with a local PC application over which I have more control.

Summary: If your needs are simple and you live in the USA then this may work for you. Otherwise, pick something else.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Remote   February 1, 2005

I've had this remote for about 2 weeks now and really appreciate the ease that it provides for working all of my electronic pieces. I have a cable box, satellite dish, TIVO, DVD player, Stereo, Satellite radio and CD jukebox. The internet setup was nice and easy, but when things get a little complicated or you have little issues like component inputs not changing correctly or timely, you turn to Logitech support. The support was the best I have experienced for any electronic item that I have ever purchased. The Rep literally spent 45 minutes on the phone with me fine tuning every aspect of the remote. It now works perfectly for every piece. I only have 2 knocks.

1. Reviewers are right in saying that the activity buttons are too small.
2. The sensitivity and speed of the infrared commands are not as quick as the remote that I replaced. (Sony RM-VL1000)

I'd buy this remote again and I'm very interested in checking out the Logitech 880 which I hear is very sweet.

5 out of 5 stars One word ... FANTASTIC   January 3, 2005

Like most A/V enthusiasts, I have many devices to control.

A/V Equiptment:
- TV
- DVD
- VCR
- LaserDisc (yes they still exist!)
- TiVo
- HP MP3 Jukebox
- Cablebox
- Xbox

The Harmony remote setup program makes it very easy to program the device. I got home and had it setup in about 20 minutes. It took me longer to find and write down all the model numbers from the various components than it did to program the remote. After entering your devices, the wizard asks you some simple question about how you watch DVDs etc to program the Activities buttons. Once you answer those quests, voila you are done.

Buttons are well placed around the center of the remote. The LCD it easily readable, the backlit display does not stay on long, I imagine that the battery will not drain too quickly.

The only negative comment I would have is regarding the wizard, why do I need to type the model number. There should be a drop down in my numble opinion.

I highly recommend this to any A/V enthusiast.
