HP quality displayed once again February 6, 2007 T. E. FINNEGAN (Halifax, PA USA) 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
I primarily purchased this DVDrw drive to edit/burn video taken with my Canon mini-DVD recorder. Installation was simple, I just swapped out my old HP CD/RW drive and used the included disc to install the Nero and DVD-playback software. Drive tray action is solid, and the overall construction seems good (no Lite-On this!). Read/write noise levels are moderate, on par with other CD and DVD drives I've used. Discs recorded on my Canon using -VR mode were immediately readable/editable, and using the included Nero software allowed quick video importing, editing, and writing to a full size DVD disc. I can't rate this drive on long-term reliability, but since the HP CD/RW drive it replaced has lasted since 2002, I'm sure this one will go the distance as well.
Big let down May 24, 2007 Roxanne (California, USA) 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
This unit did literally nothing. Ok, actually, the tray opened up - but that's it! I attempted to contact HP's support group on multiple occasions and received no response at all. I tried web searches on multiple websites and found nothing. The user manual did not help me troubleshoot. I even called Dell's tech support twice and they spent forever on the phone trying to troubleshoot with me, but even they couldn't find documentation that would help me make this silly thing work. In short...I returned it.
Great! February 19, 2007 G. S. Chase 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a great item. I got it because my built in DVD-RW broke. I love the lightscribe feature. The quality is great.
Unreliable July 20, 2007 Jonathan Birge (Cambridge, MA) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
It was a great little unit while it lasted, but mine died after about one year of use, rapidly losing the ability to read DVDs. I opened it up, and it was very cheaply made, with very loose tolerances on the drive mechanism.

Unit wooks well for basic backup. To use the print on the disc feature you have to purchase the appropriate coated discs.
