4 out of 5 stars Uniden has Improved   April 20, 2007

Uniden has fixed some chronic flaws found in its previous phones, and left a few small flaws in.

THE GOOD:
* NO WIFI INTERFERENCE. This phone works well without interfering with today's (or tomorrow's) WiFi Networks
* SOUND QUALITY IS VERY GOOD, both receiving and transmitting. Uniden's microphones have been consistently horrible in the past, and I am delighted to see that they have fixed this.
* FORM FACTOR IS NICE. Not overly sleek and trendy, but not clunky at all. The most commonly used features are quick to access with only one or two button presses, with a few exceptions (see THE UGLY, below).
* GOOD RANGE. The lower frequency band of 1.9 GHz allows for a slightly greater range than the overhyped 5.8 GHz band. Works a little better through plaster walls.
* NAME YOUR HANDSET. Each handset is nameable. This greatly simplifies paging and conference calling. (Despite previous statements, multi-handset calls ARE possible, but they must be initiated by the handset making the call - you can't just pick up the extension.)

THE BAD:
* NO HEADSET JACK OR BLUETOOTH. Cordless phones should have some kind of handsfree option besides a speakerphone setting, but this one doesn't. I have a dedicated cordless headset, so this was not an essential feature for me. The handset's speakerphone works okay.
* CALLER ID DOESN'T DISPLAY THE PHONEBOOK NAME. This is pretty basic these days, but Uniden still hasn't caught up. When people listed in my Phonebook call me from a cell phone, I want their NAME to display, not just WIRELESS CALLER. This is not a deal breaker, but certainly an annoying oversight.

THE UGLY:
* THE ALERT THAT WOULDN'T DIE. Despite being able to turn all the sound alerts off, the phone still makes a loud and irritating BLURRRP! when you drop it into the charging cradle. Better not drop it in the bedroom cradle to charge while your spouse is sleeping.
* HOW DO I ...? To keep the phone sleek, some functions are a little more hidden than they should be. You will have to consult the manual to learn how to insert a pause into a Phonebook number, muting requires three button presses (You CAN mute the handsets, despite comments made elsewhere), and some phone settings are only available in certain modes, not universally available through the Menu button. Examples: Sound Enhancer is only accessible WHILE you are making a call, and Phonebook settings can only be made WHILE you are in the phonebook. There is a reason why a previous reviewer thought you couldn't have multi-handset conversations or couldn't mute the phone; you really have to read the manual. There are only a few of these hidden technical features though, and dang, the phone does look good.

I bought the version of this phone that includes an extra handset and charger.

2 out of 5 stars Okay but limited   June 1, 2007

We have had these phones for awhile and they do not live with you well. I suspect that I will dump them and find another DECT phone system that has all the features we want. We came from a Uniden 5.8 phone system and sound quality thru out the house is almost perfect with these new phones unlike the old 5.8 that we had.

But, the volume never gets very loud on the ringer or during calls. It does not let you know of message waiting unless you walk up and really stare at the screen. The date format is European, the hidden mute function is a pain, no headset jack is bad news, especially with the volume limitations, the dance to share a phone call or transfer it to a different phone is awkward at best.

I understand this system came from Europe originally and they just did not do enough to make it right for the American market when they started selling it here. Better attention to details and interface and this would have been a great phone.

2 out of 5 stars buyer beware - extension phones?   April 21, 2007

Be warned that this, and some other expandable phone systems, do not allow an additional handset to easily join an existing conversation. The handset currently using the line must first put the outside party on hold, figure out which of the expansion handsets wants to join the conversation, ring that specific handset, and then remove the hold condition. Not exactly convenient.

On the plus side, sound quality and range are good, and as advertised, the phones generate no interference to degrade wi-fi networks.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet little phone!   June 22, 2007

I love this little phone. The set up was easy and intuitive, once I surrendered to the idea of not being able to change the European date format. Most importantly, it delivers sharp, crystal clear sound, despite the dozen or so wireless networks in my building!!

4 out of 5 stars Neat little phone   November 20, 2007

I really like this phone. It's small, plugs in anywhere, sounds great, and even functions as an alarm clock and intercom. It's now the only alarm clock I use. I wish I could link more phones to this system, but must instead purchase a second base for additional phones.
