Good, inexpensive, flexible, loud! December 12, 2007 Paul D. Verizzo (Denver-ish Colorado) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
This "GE" item is also found in Ace Hardware at $24 and competes with the Radio Shack $30 unit. I also found it under other brand and "As seen on TV" types of ads. Although it has a choice of chime (two tone, repeated twice) or alarm (dang, it's loud!), it can only be changed by removing the unit from the door and opening the battery compartment. Don't expect to be changing from one mode to the other every day. To install, you will need 3 AAA batteries and a very small phillips screwdriver to remove the battery compartment lid. I have no idea why they did that, the lid stays in place fine without the screw. The screwdriver needed is mini or "watch", about 3/32" across. Not your standard toolbox size. You will also need a drill to make a hole for the mounting screw, and a conventional screwdriver to install that. Or, do like I did and use double sided tape. Yes, you will have to peel it off from time to time to replace the batteries, but much easier and correctable. Also, will not bang around with door jarring. Some competing inexpensive units use button cells, but with AAA's, battery changes should be infrequent. To use, put the batteries in, select Chime or Alarm. Push the Learn button by the Chime/Alarm switch, turn it over, and enter a four digit code. It will beep to let you know that it is done. Wait! Now you have enter the same code to activate either function. Chime is instantaneous, but Alarm gives you some time to exit after punching in the code, or to enter before punching in the code. The unit and its triggering magnet can be mounted on either the hinge side of the door or the other side. If you have a flush mounted door the magnet will be set too far back, so mount the device on the door frame and the magnet on the door. As it swings past the device, it will trigger it. All in all, highly recommended.

I have had this produce for a few months, it was easy to install and the 4 digit alarm code is changeable if you'd like to change it. Fortunately it went off once, not because of an intruder, but because I forgot to disable it when I came home, boy is the alarm LOUD! No one will enter or exit without a person in the house or a neighbor noticing if the alarm goes off, goal met.
