Amazon.com Product Description
Have you ever wondered, "Will I hit traffic on this route? Should I go a different way?" With TrafficGauge LA/Orange County Mobile Traffic Map, you'll know the answers instantly and at a glance. With this handy device you can stay on top of driving conditions; you'll know when and where to steer clear of traffic congestion, and you'll be comfortably in control of your daily driving options. Turn on your favorite music, schedule or update your appointments, have a snack, whatever you decide, you can at least stop kicking yourself for making bad drive-time decisions. Let TrafficGauge mind the road so you arrive prepared and less stressed.

TrafficGauge is like adding a time-saving instrument to your car's dashboard -- and easy-to-read gauge that you can depend on to get you around traffic. Live, real-time information with up-to-the-minute reporting allows you to view road conditions at home, work, or in route to your destination. The device pinpoints traffic slow downs, and indicates light, medium, or heavy traffic to help you plan your departure time or change your route. This shirt-pocket portable unit lets you check traffic conditions anywhere, anytime, and with the backlight button you can even view TrafficGauge in low-light conditions, day or night. Of course, you want to be safe on the road. This device features an at-a-glance design with an easy-to-read map that is specially designed to be viewed quickly to minimize distractions so you can keep your mind on the road. Another handy region feature is the unique "home game" symbol that lets you plan around heavy traffic before or after a sporting event.

The TrafficGauge Mobile Traffic Map covers over 850 freeway miles in the greater Los Angeles and Orange County area. All the official traffic data comes directly from Caltrans and Metro, so you receive up-to-the-minute traffic information. It is also important to note that the TrafficGauge map is fixed; the only area shown is what's on the device's screen. There is no scrolling option. This helps to keep the device simple and easy to read at a glance, and it minimizes distractions to make it safer for the on-the-road user. The TrafficGauge display functions wherever a wireless signal can be received, including areas off the map. Stop sitting in traffic, and start outsmarting it with TrafficGauge Mobile Traffic Map.

3 out of 5 stars Shame on Amazon!   August 11, 2006

Product discription fails to mention that the cost just begins with the initial purchase. After one month you must pay between $6-$7 each month to maintain the service or you wind up with an $80 paperweight. As for the product itself, the graphics are a bit less than expected but probably in-line with the initial product cost. The display shows areas of freeways as being either blank, solid, or blinking, depending upon the severity of traffic. All in all, it seems to be a bit gross. As far as the practicality of alternating your route based upon traffic conditions it doesn't seem to be a slam dunk, given the LA-OC area model. I would estimate that, given a typical 30-35 mile jaunt, the choice of different routes based upon traffic conditions would be minimal..perhaps other localities (SF, Washington, etc.)would make more sense. But what the heck, it is only $80 and could be relegated as a 'cutsie' plaything.

You will have to make the decision as to it's long term value (Aprox $150 the 1st year, followed by $70+ year after year...ad infinitum. For me, no way. Back it goes, with a somewhat bitter taste regarding Amazon following many years of satisfactory service. The company rep (for the device itself) however, was very accomodating and has been making the return process as painless as possible. So I am out $7 for the shipping but have learned a lesson. Should I have anticipated the monthly charge on my own? Maybe yes, maybe no. If you purchase one, just be sure that you enter into the transaction with both eyes open.

5 out of 5 stars trafficgauge ROCKS!!   June 20, 2006

I've always liked using the Caltrans / Metro traffic info on the web to navigate my way around LA's snarled freeways. Now I can take it with me! Which is good, because I never seem to remember to check my route right before I leave the house. Or maybe my computer wasn't booted up and I was in too much of a hurry to wait.

Now I just get in the car or on the motorcycle, whip out trafficgauge, and know the best way to get to Grandma's house in Seal Beach from the Valley.
Sure, there are GPS Nav systems that have live traffic as well, but they cost ten times as much. Plus I don't need the maps. I know where I'm going - I just want to know how NOT to get there. Works for me.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing   August 27, 2006

Apart from the subscription issue this is definitely not a "must have." I often find myself in stopped traffic with the screen showing a clear freeway. And I have been in a slow traffic jam for several miles with the screen indicating there should be no problem. Not to be recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Traffic Gauge is a MUST HAVE in the OC or LA!   September 23, 2006

I received my Traffic Gauge as a present about 6 months ago; at the time, I was living in LA County and commuting to work every day in Orange County (Irvine). This handy little device saved me TONS of time, and it's really helpful when you're visintg other parts of the area, etc.
On another note, the customer service with Traffic Gauge is impressive, to say the LEAST. They are lightning fast, courteous and effective. I was SO impressed when I called. My mom has a Traffic Gauge, too, and she said the same thing: "They are all about customer service." Get one of these if you commute, you WON'T regret it!

This device is IT. Initially I got one for my husband since it was a gadget he'd yet to acquire, but after we moved across the bay & I had too many options of trying to get to work, I won't go w/out it. It DOES update within one minute & talk about non-committal: ten bucks a month--that's cheaper than anything I purchase hands down. And I'm pretty thrifty. Deactivate when you want, activate when you need. I won't ever go w/out one. It's the only "bill" I never mind paying because it's so worth its weight in solid gold.
