Good but not perfect July 6, 2007 M. Randall (Allen Park, MI) 34 out of 35 found this review helpful
First let me start with the good. There isn't a whole lot of options for portable speakers for the SanDisk (as far as I know, there is only one other speaker system available aside from the single speaker hookup), so i'm glad to say that the qaulity of this product is worth the money if you want to invest in a speaker system for it. The sound is clear and loud, and the SanDisk hooks in (and charges) very easily. The 2 complaints I have is that 1. there is no type of bass control at all.. This is a tad disappointing. and 2. there is no remote included. Altec Lansing's speaker systems for the iPod include a remote, to control volume as well as skip, stop and pause the mp3 player. This would have been a nice feature for the SanDisk version as well... But for 70 bucks, i'd say go for it because its the best on the market right now for the SanDisk speakers.
surprisingly good sound for their small size July 24, 2007 Music Fan Jeff (San Francisco, CA United States) 24 out of 25 found this review helpful
I just received my IM510 speakers tonight. If you haven't seen this at a store and order it online, you may well be surprised at how small and light this unit is. I honestly was expecting the sound quality to be much, much worse based on the look and feel of the case. Imagine my surprise when I turned on my Sansa and heard surprisingly full sound coming out of this little box. Right now I'm playing music in the next room through the IM510; while I wouldn't confuse the sound as coming from my home stereo, these speakers still sound pretty good even from the next room. When I say these speakers sound "good," however, I mean that they don't sound overly lean or thin. These things don't exactly deliver audiophile sound -- not even close to neutral. The midbass is exaggerated, more than likely to cover up for the lack of real low bass. The highs are recessed as well -- not a bad thing when you consider that a mellower tone is much more pleasant to listen to long term than one that's bright and agressive. The overall sound quality, therefore, is on the "tubby" side -- sort of slow and bloated. It's certainly good enough for casual enjoyment, but I wouldn't want to spend a lot of time listening to things on a regular basis. In comparison, you can get much better sound quality from a decent pair of headphones that list and retail for a similar price. While the Altec Lansing IM510 is a convenient and decent portable speaker solution for the Sansa e200 line of players, the price is beyond reason for the sound quality delivered. I'm not unhappy with my purchase because I did want a lightweight speaker solution for travel with my Sansa; I just think these things should cost about half what they do. Update on 8/6/07: I didn't notice this defect when I first hooked up my speakers a couple of weeks ago, but I now notice a high pitched ringing noise that emanates from the unit. It's likely some power supply noise since it makes some amount of noise even when it's turned off; it is louder when my Sansa is connected and the Altec Lansing is turned on, though, and it gets a little quieter when I touch a control on the Sansa. Unfortunately I prematurely had thought I was satisfied with the unit so I threw away all of the packaging and have no way to return it now. Fortunately the noise isn't so loud that it drowns out the music, so I guess I'll still be able to enjoy the unit while traveling. I definitely don't want to hear this high pitched noise on a regular basis, however, so I doubt I'll use this unit much at home. I downgrade my rating to 2 stars and cannot recommend anyone buy this unit given that I don't think this noise is an individual defect since it was mentioned by at least one other reviewer.
Good set of speakers, perfect for home or office June 28, 2007 Peter Bratney (Midwest, USA) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I was very pleased with my Altec Lansing Sansa dock/speakers. Contrary to what's stated in other reviews, I've found that the speakers have more than sufficient sound output. If you're looking for something to rattle windows or rock a house party, this isn't it. But the unit gets more than loud enough to be heard clearly a room away, while still preserving sound quality. I paid $60 to an Amazon marketplace seller for the unit, and I think it's worth the price. It works great in my office. It can run off 6 AA batteries, or AC, has an audio input line, and a bass out line. My only complaint is that the space for docking the sansa is too narrow to accomodate the tough-skin cover I have for my sansa. The toughskin is mandatory if you ever take your otherwise scratch-prone Sansa on the go, and it's a slight pain taking it on and off every time I want to use my speakers or take my sansa for a jog. Other than that, I give the speakers thumbs up.

This little speaker system ROCKS, big sound from a small package. I think in the future I will be purchasing the sub woofer. I would recomend this to all that are considering.
Poor design, hard to operate music player June 12, 2007 D. Sanders (Sacramento, CA) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I just received the IM510, tried it out, and put it back in the box to return it. The sound was really nice and the unit itself functioned as designed. I gave it only 3 stars for these reasons: When I put my e280 player in the dock, it sits low in the slot and makes it difficult to operate the player controls. The edge of the base of the dock is too close to the e280 scroll wheel and the arrow down button. The e280 power button is almost un-reachable. When trying to use the player buttons, the player moved loosly about, even when I used the dock inserts. And when I tried using the speaker-to-player accessory cord but it is too short to be useful. If the cord was 18-24" long then I could lay my e280 on my desk or lay it in my lap and control it that way. But then I wouldn't have the dock charging feature.
