Average Beef Jerky, but my son liked it a lot. May 29, 2008 Kendra 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I really enjoy good beef jerky. However, since I found a Brazilian brand of beef jerky that is sold in my local Kroger, nothing else matches up. I received a sample of Mr. Z Premium Beef Jerky, Teriyaki flavor. I usually really like Teriyaki flavor, but this one was a bit too mild and not very flavorful. In addition, the pieces I tried were very very tough and cut with the grain rather than against the grain. I didn't enjoy it too much at all, but my 11 year old son enjoyed it quite a bit and finished the bag. He isn't too particular, though, and hasn't had any beef jerky that he's disliked so much he wouldn't finish it. Recommended if you don't have a particular brand that you compare all beef jerky to and if you find this one at a reasonable price. The best jerky ever is World Kitchens Brown Sugar Beef Jerky, 16-Ounce Bags (Pack of 2). I've tried this flavor and the teriyaki, and it's just great. I gave this jerky 3 stars for taste and texture alone. I usually pay a lot of attention to the item's ingredients. I failed to do so this time.
Tasty And Tender with just a hint of Teriyaki.... 3 stars May 21, 2008 M Felix (originally from 4 places in CALIF throughout 24 years of my life. Now in Tacoma, WA 98422) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Mr. Z Premium Beef Jerky Teriyaki Flavor is probably the best Teriyaki flavored beef Jerky I've ever had the please of eating. Unlike Jack Link's and Oh Boy! Oberto, The teriyaki flavor doesn't over-power the beef flavor. That makes a very tasty teriyaki beef jerky. But It also has MSG, which is why I didn't give it a full 5 stars. It it was MSG-less, then it would be deserving of the 5 stars
Why Degrade Premium Grass Fed Beef With Low Grade Ingredients? May 28, 2008 Colorgirl (NE US) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
When I ordered the MR. Z PREMIUM BEEF JERKY, I was attracted to the fact that it was listed as premium high quality grass fed beef. The only places that tend to use grain fed high quality beef are those who are honoring a health oriented diet- or so it OFTEN goes. I expected it to be relatively safe to eat- safe from chemicals and lacking in some ingredients shown to be bad for health. With MR. Z, this is not the case. When I got my package of Mr. Z Teriyaki Beef Jerky, I was very disturbed to see what they are calling *premium grass-fed beef* is polluted with all kinds of bad ingredients- among them MSG, sugar, glycol propylene, sodium nitrite and caramel color. Some people might not mind this, but if you are at all health conscious as I am, this is quite disturbing. TASTE TEST I took a taste of this jerky so I could let you all know what it is like and the effect was awful at best. Initially, the flavor is a flat flavor, barely any beef at all. Then comes the sickening sweet flavor of sweetened soy sauce followed by an acrid fizzy flavor of MSG- yes, you CAN taste MSG. Unfortunately, the MSG is so strong that it has stayed in my throat fizzing and feeling icky for over a half hour now. I also experienced some dizziness and heart palpitations- very typical of high MSG content in something for me. TEXTURE The texture of this jerky is moist and easy to chew- not leathery like some jerky is. There is a lot of salt as well, not unusual for jerky type products. The color is very reddish caramel color- from the coloring added, I am sure. FINAL COMMENTS The package instructs you to use up all opened packages in three days unless you plan to refrigerate it, however, no mention of a time frame of refrigeration is mentioned once opened. I am very repulsed by this product. Although I am not a big meat eater, I don't mind an occasional bite of good quality grass fed game meat or organic meat or wild game meat or meat product once in a great while. This MR.Z Beef Jerky is terrible. I can not recommend this to anyone- if nothing else based upon the high MSG content alone.
Tasty and not too tough May 20, 2008 Derek G (Las Vegas, Nevada) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
As possibly one of the few people who actually own a smoker, I've long since gotten in touch with my inner redneck and know a thing or two about making jerky. Mr. Z's teriyaki flavored jerky hails from Brazil as do most dried meat and jerky products nowadays if you've been paying attention. I give them a thumbs up for at least noting this in a few places on the package as opposed to other companies who ignore our unenforced country of origin labeling laws. Compared to other brands, I'd rank the overall flavor and texture in the middle of the pack. The meat is tender but not so much that you wonder what they're doing to it. The flavor is sweet, but not overly so like most teriyaki flavored products. You'll taste more soy than sweet compared to others and only a slight hint of smoke. Overall it's a good flavor and the meat's not chopped and formed strips or pressed meat chunks that some brands try to pass off as beef jerky. I'm taking off a couple stars because 1) they use MSG which is the cheater's way of making jerky as all it does is excite your taste buds and 2) the price is decent but doesn't scream "buy now". All in all it's worth a try for jerky lovers - solid three stars.
Good Beef Jerky May 20, 2008 Brian P. Hudson (Dearborn, MI) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is pretty good beef jerky. For me, bad beef jerky generally suffers from one of three flaws: over-salting, over-spicing, and overly tough meat. Mr. Z avoids all three of these. It is a relatively soft jerky that doesn't make my jaws ache when I chew it; and it is pretty balanced on the salt and spice, meaning I can enjoy the flavor without a dry mouth and a need for water. I feel the teriyaki flavor is perhaps a little too subtle--I like a little more Asian flavor than Mr. Z provides--but it would not prevent me from enjoying the brand again.
