The Best Protein Powder Mix I've Tried January 4, 2007 Mir (North Miami Beach, FL USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I'm not a snacker. I like three square meals. But because I have insulin resistance (pre-diabetes), I was pretty much told firmly I had to have something every 2-2.5 hours to keep my blood sugar steady. Protein powders were recommended (low carb ones). This one is the best of the various I've tried. It mixes well with water. The flavors are not hideous (I've tried some that made me gag and retch). In fact, the strawberry and vanilla are quite pleasant. The chocolate is so-so. One scoop and I've got my protein and am done. 17 grams of protein at a go. That's excellent. Very low carb. Nice. Doesn't make my blood sugar go wacky. If you've got Metabolic Syndrome or insulin resistance or even diabetes, and you don't dig those bars or want to stop to fix a mini-snack with protein and whatnot between meals, this is a terrific solution. And it's not expensive. Stir in water and you're done! Recommended.
Not the best option for whey supplementation March 6, 2006 C. Dyer (Washington, DC) 7 out of 15 found this review helpful
Although it sounds a little silly to criticize the flavor of the "plain" whey, I have to say that compared to the other flavorless whey types I've tried, Designer Whey Natural has a distinctly unpleasant aroma and taste. My morning outmeal tastes vaguely rancid with Designer Whey Natural. But, a far worse problem is its mixability. Compared to the other whey supplements I've tried, Designer Whey is by far the worst. Short of actually blending in a blender, mixing it by hand or in a shaker results in a mixture that is a gritty, lumpy mass. If you are looking for an easy-to-use, non-flavored whey, skip Designer Whey in favor of something like Any-Whey.
Beefcake! BEEFCAKE! January 15, 2007 Livewire (Inside the belly of a huge mechanical planet-eater. Please send help.) 7 out of 12 found this review helpful
For a protein powder, this mixes surprisingly well. Not quite like Quik, but you sure don't need a blender like with most protein drinks. The best part is the taste. If stuff tastes like crap (Ovaltine for example), you won't drink it. This tastes great. Is this just for weighlifters? No way. If you could somehow shove this down your kid's throat when he reaches for the cookies, you'd have a kid who's much less fat and slobbish. Same goes for yourself. Less Doritos, more Designer Whey, fatty. It's the opposite of Slim-Fast. Slim-Fast is full of sugar and will make you fatter as you drink it. Designer Whey is full of protein, and has hardly any carbs. Even if you don't work out, this is a billion times better for you than whatever snack you thought you were going to have. Now hit the bricks, lardo. I want to see some sweat.
Tastes good, wish it was cheaper September 1, 2006 G. Ma (SF, CA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The whey protein powders i've really stuck with are designer whey and optimum nutrition, and i can say that both are very good in chocolate. I do prefer designer whey because it has a stronger taste (ON is a bit bland in water, but both are absolutely delicious in milk). Dissolves pretty easy with a spoon - only small lumps are left. The only negatives are the price, as ON is way cheaper, and i find that designer whey has a bit of chalky after taste when mixed with water. Its not strong or too unpleasant, but its there. Then again, you will get used to any powder after time. I buy ON more because of the price, but you will like this too. Avoid vanilla with designer whey, it is disgusting.
Best protein powder January 4, 2007 S. Dowell (Ashburn, VA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the best tasting protein powder I've ever found. But, what I like best about it is that it mixes well. In cases where I dont have a power mixer or blender I can stir it with a spoon and it isnt hard to swallow like most other proteins are. The strawberry is by far the best tasting flavor and goes great with milk, bananas, and/or anything else you want to add. The ratio of protein to calories and fat seems like it is up there with the best of them too which is important to me. Too often I come across protein powders with more calories then they should have.
