Very Highly Recommended. March 23, 2006 Grass Tiger (Wadsworth, IL United States) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
These diapers are fantastic! I myself prefer cloth diapers, but because we have a high water table if we do much laundry our septic backs up into our house - yuck! I am also severely chemically sensitive and so the scent on "normal" diapers and even the Seventh Generations ones that have gel make me ill. But these are great!! They are made of wood pulp/paper and do feel as if there were cotton in them. They have no chemical scent at all and feel nice and soft and smooth to my fingers. They close by means of an adhesive strip on either side that closes onto a larger piece of thin plastic on either side. If you accidentally close the adhesive strip on the paper it will tear when you pull it back off and usually not reseal. This is not a problem if you use them only once. We potty our baby and so sometimes we take it off and put it back on a few times before it gets wet or dirty. Other than accidentally sticking the strips to the paper I haven't had another problem with using them like this. There is elastic at the legs but it is basically encased so that it isn't in contact with the skin and they are snug enough on my baby's legs. These are a little harder to tell if they are wet than the seventh generation ones (I've never used regular diapers since I can't get near them with their chemical scent) because there isn't a gel. I usually just put a finger on it and then touch that finger to my thumb and then I can tell if I feel dampness or not. If my baby pees a lot though it is easy to tell if it is wet...even from the outside because it will look a little more molded in form, but does not feel damp on the outside and the inside is less damp even then than in a cloth diaper. The packaging says that you should not let the baby put these in his/her mouth since it is paper and can tear off in their mouth and that it should not be held near a flame - again because it is made out of paper. But all that said, these are not flimsy at all, they are well made and hold up just as well as a regular disposable. I highly recommend these for anyone who for whom cloth diapers just isn't possible or for those times when impractical (day care) for those people who want to limit their baby's exposures to chemicals.
The BEST Disposable out there January 19, 2007 RedNeckMom (Rochester, MN USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We typically use cloth diapers, but as our son got older the cloth diapers didn't work so well over night, if he was to get a good nights sleep. Otherwise, he'd wake up every couple of hours crying because he was wet -- so we had to find a safe alternative. Having temporarily used regular diapers, even the fragrance free kind were awful and had a terrible smell, not to mention all the chemicals and leaving behind hard to remove gel residue (little globs) all over my son. We found 7th Generation diapers, and they worked well until they changed the ingredients and made the tabs wider. The new diapers stunk horribly once wet, left behind LOTS of gel globs and the tabs would curl over and scrape our son's tummy while he crawled -- so those had to go quick! We found Tushies Tendercare dipes (with gel) -- and they worked great -- no smell, very little gel residue and chlorine free. But it did still bother me to have the gel and its chemicals (although probably the safest out there) agaist his delicate little skin. So I recently found these Gel-free wood pulp and cotton blend dipes. We tried a 4 pack and I am very pleased with the results, all except the overnight use for our 15 month old. These dipes probably will work just fine for up to 6 months or so, depending on the baby and how much they wet at night. But for our son, a tummy sleeper and heavy wetter at night, they just can't hold up all the way through and about 65% of the time we have a pee-out by morning, which adds to the laundry and sometimes wakes him up early because he's soaked. Overall, I am VERY PLEASED with how these dipes perform. They seem to be about 80-85% as absorbent as the Tendercare gel diapers, which is to be expected, and still perfectly good enough for daily use. For us, the fact that they allow the baby to feel wet once saturated is a huge bonus for potty training. Our son will sign "diaper change" or cry to let me know he's wet or messy if I haven't caught it already. The diapers don't 'feel' wet until saturated, which for my son is about 2-3 hours give or take. Night time requires that we do not put this diaper on him literally until he is going to bed. Otherwise, we're guaranteed a pee out in the early morning. But on average, with my heavy wetter, these dipes will last anywhere from 7-10 hours. So depending on your baby, they may or may not hold up to nighttime use without a mid-night change, doubling up or using an insert. But again, I think they will do perfectly well for younger babies, until the bladder gets considerably bigger!
Tushies Diapers GEL-FREE!! Well worth the extra money! June 13, 2007 B. Darnall 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have bought tushies in the past as a cloth alternative when we travel, etc. I am now using them because I have a son who has very sensitive skin and develops skin problems, blistering on his skin/ genitals because of laundry detergent residues on the cloth diapers. We have had great success with these and his problems are gone instantly and have not come back since. We thought after one package of tushies we would go back to cloth. One night in the cloth and he developed the problems again. Tushies have solved this skin problem for our son and for that we are greateful. It was very preferable to us that our children not have gel diapers in contact with their skin and as far as I know Tushies is the only company that makes a quite natural, gel-free, and very chemical free diaper. They are not able to hold as much liquid as a gel diaper, and so may need to be changed more frequently. A small price to pay considering the bad things you are avoiding. You'll know that they are pretty wet when they start bulging a little in the crotch area. Push your hand on the diaper and it should feel significantly heavier than before. They can work overnight if your baby is not a heavy wetter. If they don't seem to do the trick overnight, this is what I did. When your baby has worn a dipaer and it is not soaked all they way or pooped in, you can cut the dry portion of the diaper off and reuse it as extra soaker material in the dipaer you wish to use overnight. If that option sounds a little yucky to you, tushies also makes an insert for added absorption that you can get directly from them. You an visit their website for more info.
Better for the environment July 12, 2006 Christy A. Larson (Saline, MI USA) I used to use Seventh Generation diapers. They are now being made in a different fashion and are not as absorbent or fit as well for my daughter. In looking for another diaper, I tried these with the idea that I could compost them after cutting off the tabs and front plastic strip. They work for during the day and have not leaked. They are not as absorbent as the old Seventh Generation however. I am trying the composting.
Probably the least non-toxic diaper, but bulky December 17, 2006 Bargain Hunter So far, I probably prefer the Tushies diaper since it is the ONLY one that contains some cotton. In addition, it doesn't contain any chlorine, gel and fragrance. I wish there were there were more diapers of this type available... I would like to see Tushies creating more different sizes instead of only five?? How about seven? I would also like to see some Tushies pull-up diapers in 2007 or 2008, maybe???
