Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
Despite all the bright-colored, high-tech silicone kitchen utensils out these days, there's nothing quite like the good old-fashioned feel of wood for cooking needs. Crafted from solid beech wood, this strong 14-inch spoon is ideal for stirring deep pots of thick stew or for doling out generous dollops of macaroni and cheese. A natural oil finish protects the wooden spoon without contaminating food, while the give of wood means the spoon is safe for nonstick cookware.

True to OXO's creed of designing products that are easy to use for the widest range of users, the handle, which is flat on top and sensuously curved underneath, comfortably fits the hand. A hole in the end allows the spoon to hang where it's most needed. Set in a crock, the large spoon forms a handsome bouquet with OXO's other wooden utensils, such as a smaller mixing spoon, slotted spoons, a pancake turner, and a spaghetti server. Wooden utensils are best washed by hand. OXO backs all its products with a satisfaction warranty, and will replace or refund any returned item. --Ann Bieri

1 out of 5 stars Completely Wrong Material   April 8, 2005
Adam Sterling (New York City NY United States)

As a serious amateur woodworker who has also studied the design and building of wooden boats, let me say that beechwood is by far one of the inferior materials one could choose for making wooden spoons. Olivewood is by far the superior material for this sort of common yet critical kitchen tool. Should you doubt this, please visit the kitchens of France, Italy and Spain to see what's stirring the pot.

Additionally, fabricating the spoon by gluing multiple pieces together is a lesson in engineering failure. It violates the most basic principles of woodworking. Wood, because it is made by nature and not man is not uniform. Wood not only expands and contracts as it heats and cools, but also as it draws up moisture and dries. Multiple pieces equals multiple rates of expanding and contracting, working against the glued joint.

While Oxo makes and sells some very fine kitchen tools (I have a vegetable peeler by them that's the best I've ever owned and it's about a decade old), this is sure not among them.

A product to avoid.

Bought two spoons and within 2 months both had split along the glue lines. The spoons were hand washed. Get spoons but I can't afford to replace them every two months.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Tool   May 27, 2005

Looking at the criticisms of this spoon from other users, I can't help but wonder if OXO changed the manufacturing process for its wooden spoons, because the one that I own is definitely made from one piece of wood.

Any chef who is concerned about scratching nonstick cookware should own this spoon and the others in the OXO lineup. I use it with my steel surfaced cookware as well. This spoon is a pleasure to hold and stir sauces with. It definitely makes life easier in the kitchen.

Tip: to protect your spoon from cracking, apply some food-grade mineral oil and rub it in all over. Apply once a month or so to keep the wood protected and to prevent it from drying out, and your spoon will last a long time.

1 out of 5 stars Not like my old oxo spoon   March 16, 2006

I have an oxo spoon I bought a couple of years back. It's a well-made heavy spoon. But when I recently went to buy more as gifts, I discovered oxo has since thrown quality out the window. Their spoons are now made of several pieces of wood glued together--just like so many other cheap wooden spoons for sale nowadays which usually crack after a few uses. If this is what you want, just go to your local discount store. But if quality if what you're after, you'll have to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Durable Solid Wood Spoon - Perfect in Every Way   December 6, 2006

This OXO Good Grips Large Wooden Spoon is PERFECT in every way -- constructed of solid wood, with durable handle and no weak spots where inferior wooden spoons snap, this ergonomically designed spoon endures serveral hard mixings of Christmas cookie dough, and all other essential kitchen duties for heirloom wooden spoons. This wooden spoon performs reliably, durably, and with sufficient strength left in one's hand for placing cookies on cookies sheets as well! This spoon is a "really good thing" for everybody's gourmet kitchen! GREAT JOB, OXO designers!
