New Version of an Old Idea October 21, 2008 R. Thomasson (Kansas) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Theory is very simple. Fill the crock section of the holder with softened butter. Run a little tap water into the cup. Turn the crock upside-down in the cup and leave on the breakfast table for up to a month. The water prevents air from reaching the butter and causing it to go bad. Since the butter is stored at room temperature, it is always spreadable. While the photos of the crock show it full past the brim, don't do this. On the first fill bring the butter just "up to" the rim. As you use butter out of the crock try to take it evenly off the top and not from around the sides. The surface tension of the butter against the sides will keep it in the crock and out of the water. If you keep your house very warm, you might have some trouble keeping the butter from sliding into the water. The Pinzon Butter keeper feels sturdy (thick) and should hold up to continual use. I find it helps to change the water every few days.
Great little butter crock. October 23, 2008 Shirley (Dayton,Ohio) I really like Pinzon's small butter crock. I have been wanting one because they use them at a French restaurant I eat at occasionally, to keep garlic and tomato flavored butter in. I mixed cinnamon and sugar in my butter, filled it just almost to top, placed it in cold water and it keeps the butter soft for spreading on toast.I would recommend changing the water daily if you keep your house really warm. Having the butter ready to spread is a real time saver when you just want a piece of toast or bagel and cup of coffee before you go out in the morning.
Finally, soft butter October 27, 2008 Jane Dust (new york) This is one of those things that I didn't know that I really, really needed. I love having bread with dinner and I love to put butter on it, but I hate struggling with the hard butter. In Europe we used to buy butter mixed with a bit of oil to keep it soft, but couldn't find this in US. The crock is cute, reminds me of France. We have it on a counter and only need to refill the water from time to time. The butter is fresh, perfectly soft and does not turn yellow, which often happens in the fridge. What can I say, I love it. The crock has some imperfections but I don't care, because my butter is always soft and ready to use.
Works well October 29, 2008 Natasha Stryker (California) I have been wanting one of these forever, but just never got around to buying one. This one works great and it is so convenient to have soft butter on the counter to spread or whip into a recipe. I like that this is white, it matches my table and my kitchen which are two different color pallets. Make sure you do not fill the butter past the top and don't add too much water or you would have a mess. Be aware that there is a bit of water that drips from this because it is sitting in water, I know that sounds silly to note, but just make sure you hold it over the crock when you lift and use it. The crock and top are smooth glazed porceline, but the top ring around the handle is not glazed. We have had it for just a week and it has already absorbed some color from people's hands, kind of icky -- wish it was all glazed.
Useful in Efficient Breakfasts of Eggs, Cereal and Coffee November 8, 2008 Brockeim (Where the Wind Blows) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
These years in a small home have created a tension between sophisticated dishware and space. When I can manage both, all is balanced and good. While a butter keeper to some, I have in this a convenient all-in-one breakfast dish. I began with a hardboiled egg set in the handle, snug until a knock from the butt of my knife provided me the first taste of morning. The small bowl where water is usually poured held my raisin bran, limiting my portion and saving my diet. A toasted raisin bagel on the side complimented all. Proper breakfasts are always finished with coffee, and the butter keeper assisted in this as perfectly as it did for the egg and cereal. A rich French roast darkened the dairy white cup. A few drips of whole cream hid beneath the surface after my spoon moved the coffee carefully. Coffee swirled with majestic white ribbons finding more than juncture. Fading quickly into one smooth color, my breakfast was ending with an alert mind and satisfied palate. May your kitchen be as efficient and artistic as can be with a Pinzon Butter Keeper. --Brockeim
