Should You Use Saw Palmetto for Prostate Health? November 16, 2007 David Ross (Rochester, NY USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Some scientific studies have shown that 320 mg daily of standardized saw palmetto extract is effective in decreasing the symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia(BPH). Other studies have shown that it is no more effective than a sugar pill. Overall, saw palmetto is thought to be safe and may be of some help for BPH. Curiously, the recommended dose for this Natures Bounty product is 160 mg daily of standardized extract which is most likely too low. The best price for the most often recommended dose is $4.49 for Swanson Saw Palmetto 320 Mg 60 Sgels standardized extract. Even with shipping the Swanson product is less expensive when you consider that it is twice as potent. In simple terms BPH means that the prostate is enlarged and slowing down the male urinary stream. The downside of taking saw palmetto is that it should not be an excuse for avoiding an exam and discussion with your doctor. For example an exam and blood test may be needed to rule out prostate cancer. So man up and see your doctor if you have urinary symptoms that might be BPH or might be cancer. That done you can consider whether to take saw palmetto.
