Amazon.com Review Brita's advanced water filtering systems help remove chlorine, sediment, zinc, and other harmful substances such as cadmium, copper, benzene, lead, and mercury, for clean, great-tasting water. With a tank that holds up to 1.13 gallons of water and fits neatly on countertops and refrigerator shelves, the Ultramax Smart Dispenser is the perfect size for a small office or family. It comes with an innovative electronic gauge that helps monitor use and alert busy users when its time to replace the filter. An included, non-replaceable battery with an expected life of 5 years powers the gauge. Brita filters should be replaced every 40 gallons. The Ultramax should be hand washed in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Brita offers a limited 90 day warranty on pitchers for defects outside of normal wear and tear. --Jessica Reuling

Can be difficult to fill, some leaking May 5, 2004 59 out of 64 found this review helpful
I own a previous model that was just like this except without the electronic reminder. I keep mine in the fridge. It can be a pain to fill, and the water is susceptible to fridge odors since the cap is vented. I've noticed minor leaking from the spout's connection to the housing, and I'm keeping my eye on it. Had it for a year and a half. A couple of times when I've cleaned it (as I do every two months at filter replacement) I have noticed possible mildew/mold/suspicious-looking pink stuff.
Great system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! January 19, 2006 Dwight Anderson (Detroit,Mi USA) 40 out of 41 found this review helpful
I had been using the smarller Britta pitcher(holds 5 glasses). That works wonderfully by the way, just too small for larger families or serious water drinkers. The only complaint with that was the size caused me to have to fill it constanly as I drink a lot of water. So I decided to upgrade. First I purchased the faucet mount filter and was disappointed. The thing moves slower than molassas! I returned that and was going to get a standard pitcher filter setup but decided to go with this one because it was only four dollars more than a pitcher that held ten glasses of water. This provides 18 glasses of the best tasting water ever. I live in an area where our water is reputed to be among the best in the country(at least that what the local officials say) and this only improves on it!! Now I fill this up,put it on a shelf in the fridge and voila,I have great tasting ice cold water at my fingertips. I think this is much more cost effective than buying bottled water. The best part of it all? My kids have now become water drinkers!! It might be because of the easy to use tap, which by the way makes this much more convienant to use as opposed to the pitcher. Although they swear that they drink more water now because it "just tastes better". I am, so far, very pleased with this sytem. I think it is a wise investment. Great tasting water without the chlorine smell or taste at a great price! It doesn't get much better than that as far as I can see!!!!!!!
I'd be worried about mold, etc. April 22, 2005 dean-l (Twin Cities- Maple Grove, MN; Baby!!) 27 out of 43 found this review helpful
I've been using Brita filters for a long time now. They work pretty good. With a container of this size I'd be worried about mold, etc. Even with a pitcher filter like I've always used, you will find some "yellowish" stuff starting to form around the filter area in the "holding" tank. Also I've found it in the pour spout area too. I try to be good about maintenance. All I'm saying is it may be better to error on the side of refilling more (more fresh "chlorinated" water running through) than stale water sitting for days at a time. The smaller pitchers have less "moist" surface area and you expose them to treated water more often.
One word - Mold October 19, 2005 B. Lee (fremont, ca) 27 out of 32 found this review helpful
Throughout the years I have used and owned many different versions of the Brita Pitcher Water Dispenser. All of these filtered water containers have been great. The only complaint I have ever had with these filters is size. The Brita Ultramax Water Filter Dispenser was supposed to answer this problem. Unfortunately due to bad design, it introduced a multitude of problems that never existed with past Brita products. Pro: Size: This water dispenser can definitely hold a lot of water. (Ironically, this is really a disadvantage; as you will find below.) Con(s): Mold: If you do not let this filter dry within a maximum of two days, you will get mold. This mold will probably make you ill (sore throat) (Conversely if you look at it from another point of view - it will strengthen your immune system). To avoid this problem, the water dispenser should be washed every week at very least (to be safe you should wash it more often). I have never had this problem with Brita's other products (I have friends who never washed their Brita pitchers for months, and there is not even the slightest sign of mold when they do wash it). Left Over Water: Due to the faulty design of the product, there will be left over water both above the filter and below it. Besides turning the product upside down, you cannot dispense all of the water. This is just stupid and hints at the lack of quality assurance testing of this product. Not surprisingly, this helps further contribute to mold growth. Conclusion: Save your money and buy Brita's other well designed pitchers or even Pure's pitchers. (The key word is pitcher.) You will only waste time and possibly your health with this poorly designed product.
Poor spigot design = leaking & inaccessible water. May 28, 2006 Francis Mataac (Mountain View, CA USA) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This product is markedly inferior to its main competitor, the Pur 2-Stage Dispenser. Specifically, I found two main flaws: 1. The spigot draws water from at least an inch and a half up from the base of the dispenser. As a result, quite a lot of water is left inaccessible for drinking, even after tipping over the dispenser. 2. Even more infuriatingly, the spigot's connection to the main housing is so poorly designed that it eventually starts to leak water all over the place. The first dispenser I purchased started to leak after 1 week. I dutifully exchanged it for another one, which proceeded to leak after about 2 weeks. It appears that the "O-ring" that connects the spigot to the main housing shrinks when it gets cold. . . a rather fatal flaw for an item intended for use in a refrigerator. Despite being a lifelong Brita user, I exchanged this product for a Pur 2-stage dispenser. I am now converted and will never go back. The dispenser is rock solid, and the water even tastes better!
