1 out of 5 stars Mobile only works while playing music, so you are FORCED to listen to it & it is too LOUD even on the lowest setting   January 30, 2007

IMPORTANT: Find a mobile with the option of it working, while being silent w/out music.

I thought this mobile was great for the first 5 minutes, but then I quickly realized, I couldn't get the thing to shut up- darn it- they didn't put that option on it! How can this be? It is a $40+ dollar mobile. My baby just wanted to see it go, but the music, and sliding beads put him over the edge. This mobile is too loud, and the sliding beads are loud as well. It stimulates baby too much. Even after covering it up and arranging it under the bumper pad- it was still too loud.

The motion is actually quite hypnotizing and great, but "Tiny Love" RUINED it by not putting a "silent running feature button" on it. I'd pay $60 for it if it would just be quiet!!!

If this mobile worked without sound it would be wonderful. As it is now, I can't use it that much- only when baby is at his happiest. Even then, the mobile wears him out- and ruins his happy state, because it is too loud.

I think I shall pry it open and try to break the speaker. I am serious.

I rated it with one star, because I can only use it when my baby is at his most rested and happiest state. If he is the least bit tired, it overstimulates him and makes him cry.

4 out of 5 stars Baby has love/hate relationship with mobile   May 4, 2007

When we put together our nursery we bought a very charming little mobile with a wind-up mechanism. The baby loved it, but she began to start screaming when the music stopped after about a minute. I found myself constantly winding the thing in order to keep her quiet, which seemed to defeat the purpose of the mobile. These Symphony-in-Motion mobiles seem to be some of the only battery-operated mobiles out there. Compared to our other little mobile, it is huge and garish. It is also kind of sinister looking because the way it moves and the black-and-white spirals on it give it the appearance of a 1950's brainwashing tool. I don't know if that description makes sense, but if you saw it you would understand.

When the baby is in a good mood she can be transfixed by the mobile for about 5 or 6 minutes. Then she starts screaming. If she is in a bad mood she whimpers and won't even look at it. When I put her to sleep I try to keep the mobile as far from her line of vision as possible, because it is too stimulating and will keep her up. This isn't easy, because it's enormous.

Although I don't like how it looks I'm holding on to it because I have a feeling that the mobile will ultimately be capable of yielding 10-15 minutes of baby bliss. At only 2 months, it's understandable that the baby would be a little freaked out by it.

1 out of 5 stars It only works with the loud music on. Too loud even on lowest setting.   January 29, 2007

I try to muffle the music out with putting the speaker part under the bumper pad, but it is still too loud...even on the lowest setting. I can't beleive that for a mobile that costs $40 there isn't an option of watching the motion without the music. I am going to return it tomorrow.

It would be fine as an object for stimuli, but I was hoping for a more calming effect. My baby liked it for awhile, but when he got tired- he hated the noise. I had to turn if off, pick him up, and walk around with him to calm him. The mobile did more harm than good.

I will be in search for another mobile WITH THE OPTION OF IT WORKING WITH AND WITHHOUT THE SOUND FUNCTION.

5 out of 5 stars Quirky, FUNctional and durable!   July 25, 2006

This mobile is great! It is age appropriate, FUNctional and not a clone of all the other "whimsical" mobiles that are out there. This quirky one fit the bill for us. Our baby loves it! After he could reach it, we removed the mobile portion and he still listens to the music. And since the buttons are easy to press, he can turn it on himself! I guess this feature could also be considered a drawback!;)

In my opinion the bright colors would be appropriate for a boy or a girl (the animals do have pink accents but not an overwhelming amount). We were a little concerned that our baby would have a somewhat distorted understanding of animals since the animals look so funky - definitely not the traditional Old Macdonald stuff! But that doesn't seem to be a problem and he was mesmerized by it, so that works for me! The batteries last a long time and the volume control is another nice feature. Also, the classical music has a relatively good sound quality.

This was also very durable, because even with moving the "arm" of the mobile around several times a day and my baby pulling on the animals before we moved it out of his reach, all was still well on the farm!

4 out of 5 stars Hope they work on making it better   July 21, 2006

Used it with our first two kids and they seemed to really enjoy it. The on/off button disintegrated pretty quickly, but the company mailed us a new music box, which certainly impressed me. But now that I unpacked it to use with kid number three, I discovered that the motor quit working while it was boxed up. I can understand it wearing out after a while, but not sure why it broke while in the box. Also, I put several pieces of clear packing tape over the speaker to muffle the sound, because even the "quiet" setting is ridiculously loud. A pretty good product overall, but not sure I'll buy another for kid #3, despite all the marketing hype around the web that has almost convinced me that my child can't grow up smart without it. (Kids #1 and #2 are pretty smart. Hard to say how much is due to this mobile.)

Update: Okay, so I bought a new one. Decided Kid #3 deserved a working mobile. It looks essentially the same as before, but unfortunately, they're now using poor quality parts on this product. Five years ago, this mobile had very nice music quality, really good quality for a toy. They seem to be using a different computer chip on the current version of this product, and the exact same tunes now sounds airy and fuzzy. A disappointing downgrade. Furthermore, there is a very long pause between songs. Long enough that you think the thing quit working. The prior version didn't have that. Wonder why they decided to use lower quality electronics.
