Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
Uniquely designed, this coffeemaker brews a single serving of fresh gourmet coffee at the touch of a button. Because the machine uses premeasured coffee pods, the system is hassle-free, is easy to clean, and guarantees a flavorful, fresh brew each time.

Measuring 13-1/2 by 12 by 8-1/2 inches, the coffeemaker is shaped like a curved cylinder with a round base. Two pod holders are included: a shallow holder that holds one coffee pod for one cup, and a deeper filter that holds two pods for two cups (or one 8-ounce mug). After filling the removable reservoir with fresh water to the "max" line, the pods are inserted and the lid locked into place. A simple push of the "on/off" button and either of the one- or two-cup buttons starts the brewing process. Up to five 4-ounce cups can be brewed on one reservoir of water. Cups are not included, but almost any 4-ounce cup or 8-ounce mug will do the trick. All the removable parts--the pod holders, reservoir, coffee spout, plastic drip tray, and metal cup tray--are dishwasher-safe. The coffeemaker carries a two-year limited warranty and a variety of coffee pods are available separately. Also, Senseo was awarded the ChefsBest award for best performing single-serve coffee appliance. The ChefsBest Award for Performance is awarded to the brand rated highest overall among leading brands by independent professional chefs. --Ann Bieri

From the Manufacturer

The Senseo coffeemaker combines an integrated brewing system from Philips Electronics with high quality coffee pods from Sara Lee's Douwe Egberts brand, one of Europe's premiere coffee brands for more than 250 years, to create a perfect cup of coffee. The result of over 7 years of research and development, this coffeemaker brews a consistent, balanced cup of coffee each time with a unique frothy coffee layer. Brewing a sensational cup of fresh, gourmet coffee every time, at the touch of a button, the Senseo is perfect for coffee lovers of all varieties.

The Senseo's mild pressure system heats water to 205 degrees fahrenheit in a boiler consistently every time. Via the mild pressure system, the heated water is forced through the machine and is evenly distributed over the pre-measured coffee pod(s.) Exiting through a pinhole in the pod tray, the newly brewed Senseo coffee is projected into the base of the patented "frothing chamber" where it is lightly aerated to produce the frothy coffee layer. The machine brews at 1.2 bars. Espresso machines typically brew at 9 bars or higher and drip brewers do not use pressure. The machine then distributes either individual or double servings of gourmet Senseo coffee simultaneously--the whole process taking on average only 45 seconds.

Easy to Use, Flavorful Results

The Senseo is simple to use--start by filling the handy removable reservoir up to the "max" line. Then, insert the pods you are using, and lock the lid into place. Next, push the "on/off" button and the brewing process begins with either one or two cups. You can brew up to five 4-ounce cups on a single reservoir of water. To make clean up easy, the removable parts, including pod holders, reservoir, coffee spout, plastic drip tray, and metal cup tray, are dishwasher-safe.

Senseo offers a varied selection of blends and flavors. In addition to the first four original blends, Mild, Medium, Dark, and Decaffeinated, you can also choose from Paris Vanilla Bistro, Killarney Irish Creamery, Vienna Hazelnut Waltz, Senseo Sumatra, and Senseo Cappuccino. Senseo Cappuccino`s specially designed pod contains premium coffee with a separate layer of creamer housed in an innovative "honeycomb" to ensure it blends evenly with the coffee. The result is an extra luxurious cappuccino, at the touch of a button, with no extra steps involved.

3 out of 5 stars Senseo deprivation (What, no-one's used that one yet?)   November 5, 2004
Todd Hagley (Decatur, GA)

I'll start by saying that I love coffee; if I were to give blood, my plasma would be 60% arabica. Having said that, this machine has been a bit of a disappointment. I too read reviews and plotted for the right time to spring for one of these. I'm a big fan of European style coffee and the Douwe Egberts brand; so buying one should have been an easy choice. Something about this machine made me pause, however, so I waited again while wondering if something might push me in the right direction.

After a particularly bad day at work, however, I caved and went out and bought one. Warning: opening, priming, and testing your new coffee machine at 10PM is a bad idea if sleep is on the agenda. Not being that fool-hardy, I just cleaned it from shelf storage and waited for dawn.

After reading the other reviews, I knew that priming the machine before each brew cycle was advisable to ensure a better cup of joe (since they already advertised this as a better cup of coffee, I can only guess that priming it elevates the cup's power to somewhere above proto-nuclear). And yes, it can be noisy when priming, but the regular brew cycle is just as loud if not louder, so don't be fooled by the instructions.

Primed, pumped, loaded, and ready to go, I got my pods ready, positioned the mug, and hit the "two cup" option. The machine sputtered to life and produced a nice cup of coffee with a heavy dose of crema. Added a little sugar and took the first sip. Not bad, but not great either. Also, given the whole set-up, I had to remind myself that this was coffee, not espresso, but in my mind, it just wasn't delivering on the promise.

A few more days with it, and a pattern set in: get up, load the machine, prime it, dump water, re-load it, set up pods, brew coffee, dump pods, clean pod holder, and dose coffee with cream and sugar. After a while, it dawned on me that I was spending more time getting it ready than my reliable filter brew machine I had stored away to make room for this. Not wanting to about face right away, I stuck with it for a week to see if it would grow on me. That wasn't the case, sadly, and its days were numbered.

Last night I returned the Senseo and picked up some coffee for my old brew machine that grudgingly took me back this morning.

Here's what I think went wrong with the machine: too much time to prep the machine, cost of pods, pod variety, overall cost of the machine, and economy. Like I said, the coffee wasn't bad, but I personally like switching out brands every few weeks for variety's sake. I was in a coffee shop two days after buying the Senseo, and I was bummed that I couldn't buy one of my old favorites to plug into the machine. Having said that, there are lots of vendors out there that offer better pods, but you'll spend a boatload of money. Kind of like buying that 2lb bag of beans at the warehouse shop; you have to really love that one type or else you're not really saving any money. Cheaper filter coffee works out to like $0.09 a cup, whereas Senseo pods can range from $0.25 to $0.75 online, so while the coffee is a little better, it's not enough to make this machine worth it. I can load my filter machine with water and coffee, hit brew and take my dog outside in the morning and come back to a nice pot of coffee in the same time I stood around getting the Senseo ready. So a few unused cups of coffee might go down the drain each week, but that's not a big deal to me.

Now, bear in mind that that's just my opinion. Obviously, a lot of people love this machine. You might too. If you're on the fence, find a friend with one and try it first before taking the plunge. Philips apparently also stages in-store demos, but not near my zip code. Wonder if I should have taken that as a sign...

All in all, if you have the counter space, money, patience, and time to use this, you'll love it. I don't have all of the above for the Senseo, so I'll lump it with my $25 filter brew until something better comes along.

4 out of 5 stars I finally went out and bought one.....   October 17, 2004

If you are reading these reviews for the 100th time and still procrastinating over whether to purchase this machine or any other single serve machine, read on.

I, like yourself, read every review here at Amazon about the Black and Decker, Melitta and Senseo units. The B&D I dismissed because of the leakage issues and reported poor construction.

Then we come to the Melitta which was the cause of my angst. My local department store had the Melitta unit for $29.99 with 8 pods. They also had the Senseo for $69.97 with 18 pods. Decisions, decisions.

I spent weeks reading reviews and trying to decide if I should buy one or the other or none at all. I really wanted one and was thisclose to picking up the Melitta, but you can only use the Melitta pods or pay the inflated prices online for other pods (which you may or may not like either). There is also no permanent filter (see later in this review) for the Melitta.

I decided to go with the Senseo after someone in a review mentioned that they used the Melitta pods with success. So I picked up the Senseo and also a box of 18 Melitta decaf pods. Total cost with tax: $81.05.

Out of the box, the unit is pretty nice. The plate that the cup sits on is very large. Construction wise, it feels like a quality item. The pod holders are metal and the lock is not flimsy at all. I removed the reservoir and filled it to the max with filtered cold water, turned the machine on and pressed the two coffee cup marked buttons and the machine flushed. You have to do this before making the first cup of coffee. The reservoir didn't snap into place or anything and I noticed there is a slot of empty space between the top of the reservoir and the machine. It is not a defect. I was worried at first at how easy the reservoir lifted out but everything worked out fine.

I put a small pot under the spouts to collect the water. The instruction booklet said this process is louder than the brewing process. It buzzed but wasn't overbearing. After flushing, I went about making my first cup of coffee. I thought that the unit came with two different kinds of Senseo coffee but both packs with my unit were the Mild roast. I decided to see what would happen if I made an 8 ounce cup with one of the Mild pods.

It came out very hot with a nice head of "crema" but weak for the strong coffee lover. I enjoyed it and thought it would be good for an evening cup. I tend to stay away from strong caffeinated coffee in the evening because it will keep me awake. This was decent. I imagine that one of the dark roast pods would make a decent 8 ounce cup but I didn't have a dark pod to try out.

The next test was to try a Melitta decaf pod in the Senseo. At first glance, the Melitta pod is smaller and thicker than the Senseo pod. The Senseo will not close if you use the single pod holder for the Melitta pod. The double pod holder held it though. The first bit of water that the Senseo sent through was clear but it darkened pretty quickly. It filled a ten ounce mug just about to the brim. I thought it might overflow but it didn't. The crema came a bit over the top of the cup but did not spill down the sides.

Again, I brewed an 8 ounce cup using one pod. It produced a mild cup of decaf, drinkable unless you like strong, heavy tasting coffee. Someone mentioned in another review that they thought perhaps some additive was put in the Senseo pod to produce the crema. The Melitta machine does not make crema coffee, however, when I used the Melitta pod in the Senseo, there was a big head of crema produced so I don't know.

I did not find it watery, just light. The Melitta pod seems to have a lot more coffee in it than the Senseo pod. It may be just that the Senseo pod is bigger, but the Melitta just felt heavier and more stuffed. I don't think that two Melitta pods would fit in the two pod compartment so if you want to use the Melitta pods and desire a strong up, make the four ounce cup with one Melitta pod in the two pod holder.

My next test was to make a four ounce cup of the Senseo/DE Mild roast. It came out piping hot with a nice head of crema and tasted very nice. I put in a drop of skim milk and stirred it up and the crema remained. It was a pleasant cup of coffee.

Lastly, I made a 4 ounce cup of Melitta decaf. Again, a nice, big frothy head of crema, but a taste a little stronger than I'm used to. I am going to get the Folger's pods and give those a shot next.

The machine itself has been flawless in it's operation. It's attractive, well built and not overbearingly loud when making a cupa joe. There is a permanent filter available now so you will be able to use your own coffee if you prefer. Some have said that the reason a lot of folks buy this machine is for convenience and that having to clean out the permanent filter defeats the purpose of the machine's convenience.

In my case if I can use my cooks corner decaf coffee cake flavored coffee in this machine, cleaning out the filter is well worth it!

Also, the Senseo web site has a $20 rebate currently available. That is what made me say what the heck and pick up the unit. I'm glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars Great Machine ... with the Right Pods   October 12, 2004

I recently had to replace my dear Cuisinart Grind & Brew. To my taste, it made about the best coffee ever. The tradeoff for the great coffee was a clean-up job involving the scrubbing and drying of several parts of the coffee maker. In my search for a replacement, I decided to see if I could find something that would make equally good coffee, but be less of a pain to clean.

Senseo seemed to meet my needs. Many of the negative reviews of both the Cuisinart and the Senseo were that the coffee wasn't strong enough. I figured that since I like the Cuisinart coffee, the Senseo should be just fine. The coffee pods would greatly reduce preparation and clean-up time.

I followed the instructions for flushing and cleaning the Senseo, and prepared my first cup. WOW -- it was TERRIBLE! But that was with two decaf pods. The next morning, I tried it with one dark roast and one decaf, and it was still pretty undrinkable. I've never had coffee that managed to be too weak and bitter simultaneously, but the Senseo branded pods by Douwe Egberts managed to accomplish that trick!

I spent much of that morning looking for suggestions on the Internet, and ordered pods from easypods.co.uk and alohaislandcoffee.com. While we waited for the new pods to arrive, my husband and I continued to try different mixes of Senseo pods, but couldn't find an acceptable combination.

We were, however, totally sold on the convenience of the Senseo machine. We haven't had too much trouble with the smaller carafe; we make two mugs of coffee, and put another pot of water on to heat while we drink them. The coffee pods probably cost about $1 more a day to use than regular coffee, but the ease of use and clean-up is worth it to us. The only thing I don't like about the machine is that my commuter mug is too tall to fit under the spouts, even with the drip tray removed. I put a measuring cup under the spout to catch the coffee and pour it easily into the travel cup.

Finally, the new pods arrived -- and they did the trick. We get hot, delicious coffee. In fact, we probably drink more coffee now than we used to; we'll brew up a couple of cups of after-dinner decaf, which we never would have done with the old machine.

If you're sold on the concept of Senseo, but worried about the taste of the coffee, do yourself a favor and use non-Senseo pods from the beginning.

PROS: Super-simple preparation and clean-up; delicious coffee, if you order pods that are not the Senseo brand.

CONS: The pods made for the machine make terrible tasting coffee; not enough clearance under the spouts.

5 out of 5 stars Best coffee maker, coffee only so-so   October 30, 2004

The PODS are a great idea. Folgers, Millstone, and Senseo PODS are pretty great, though the Melitta PODS slightly less so. There are also tons of other companies coming out with their own coffee PODS too. The biggest problem with the Melitta One-Cup Coffee Maker is that the water reservoir is a little small. The biggest problem with the Mr. Coffee Home Cafe is that the water reservoir leaks. The Black & Decker Home Cafe seems to be the most problematic of them all, in that it is really flimsy, with all these really thin pieces of platic that can break really easily. The B&D model also makes a huge racket while brewing and the coffee comes out only luke warm. The best, but also the most expensive is the Senseo. I can use the Folgers and Millstone coffee, which is the best, but the machine works much better. The Senseo machine works better not just because of the solid construction, but also because it makes two cups at the same time and pressurizes the water for more efficient brewing.

4 out of 5 stars Only one complaint   May 21, 2004

Well, technically, I can't complain. It does what it's advertised to do -- make a piping hot cup of coffee in about 90 seconds with foam on the top. Several companies put out coffe pods now and I think I like Maxwell House best. I like Senseo least. My one gripe with the Senseo is that the spout is fitted too low to accommodate any of my coffee mugs. The spout should be adjustable to provide an extra 1/4 to 1/2 inch of space if needed. I looked at the two cups that came with the machine only long enough to judge their weight and balance so I could sail them across the kitchen into the trash container. I found just one mug in my kitchen short enough to fit under the spout, so now I drink my coffee from my son's Winnie the Pooh Happy Birthday hot chocolate mug. He stopped drinking out of that mug 10 years ago. (sigh)
