Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
The Farberware Traditions line features classic-look cutlery at an inexpensive price for the home cook. Each knife blade is constructed of high-carbon stainless steel that has been precision ground to a very sharp edge. A full tang gives the knife added strength and weight for balance, while the triple-riveted composite handle is ergonomically shaped for comfort. Not as heavy as some knives, Traditions cutlery especially suits smaller hands or those who prefer a lighter weight for chopping and cutting over extended periods of time.

This Traditions 21-piece block set supplies a novice chef or a new couple setting up a kitchen with an excellent assortment of knives, as well as poultry shears, kitchen shears, and an 8-inch sharpening steel. The knives consist of the following: 3-1/2-inch parer; 5-inch utility; 6-inch boning; 6-1/2-inch fork; 7-inch santoku; 7-inch cleaver; 8-inch slicer; 8-inch chef's; 8-1/2-inch bread; and eight 4-1/2-inch steak knives. Each piece has its own storage slot in the natural wood block, which is angled for easy access. While the China-made knives are dishwasher-safe, Farberware recommends washing and drying the cutlery by hand and covers the set with a lifetime limited warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri

4 out of 5 stars A deal at any price   December 15, 2004

I have owned this set for about a month now and I can safely say these are a good mid-level set. The knives were sharp out of the box and made well. the steel is a good guage and do not flex like my previous starter set. The steak knives have not rusted in the dishwasher but I do hand wash all the other chopping, dicing, and slicing blades. I am an average size man and can safely say that the handles on the smaller knives are a little smaller than I would have liked, or I am too used to the big injection molded plastic from my previous ones. That is the only complaint I have. I frequently cut meat, Dice vegetables, and just flat out use them. The price can not be beat and I am very happy with this purchase. I will continue to use these for quite some time.

3 out of 5 stars GREAT PRICE! so so quality...   November 25, 2004

21 piece cutlery set for how much? Well after receiving the set I can say that you get what you paid for. The set is average and wouldn't be what a chef might be looking for. But for regular house hold folks like me, I guess this set will do.

4 out of 5 stars A sharp buy for a starting cook   June 14, 2005

Knives are a real challenge for a cook. I vividly remember my early cooking days trying to prepare meals with low cost department store/discount store knives. Bad knives mean slow preparation, poor quality cuts and frustration.

Great knives on the other hand require an investment that most starting or part-time cooks simply can't justify. Higher quality "never need sharpening" knives can be useful but are generally limited. What is needed are knives with real blades, that can be sharpened, that have the right weight and are at a low cost. These knives come very close...

Pro's
--Cost is very low(lower than most "low quality" sets and 100s lower than high end knife sets).
--Blades are good.
--Includes a large variety of knives and scissors. In particular two cleavers.
--Good set of steak knives

Con's
--Handles are small...the balance is affected and cutting quality and speed will be impacted.
--Blades do need to be dried after hand washing...rust can occur otherwise but this is steel that NEEDS sharpening.
--Blade weight could be better.

I bought these as a set of knives for a second kitchen(my other is in fact a higher end set also by Farberware). I like having slicer, cleaver etc. nearby so I can use the right tool for the job at hand. If you are looking for a set of knives that has a good selection of blades and have a tight budget I can't imagine a better set. In particular if you are not a full time cook this is a low cost way to get real knives into your kitchen.

4 out of 5 stars So Far So Good!   September 1, 2005

I have had these knives for a month now. Please understand that I do NOT do dishes, so my knives are likely left in a shocking state to kitchen fanatics until my husband finally washes and dries them in the dishwasher. Other reviewers have said how terribly these knifes rust. I have to say I haven't seen any of this so far though!

I needed a new set of knives and this one was $100 at my local mall. For a 1/3 of the price on Amazon its stylish and a great buy! It has 2 sets of scissors so I can finally have one to open bags and one to use on food. Much better!
