3 out of 5 stars The good, the bad and the disappointing   November 27, 2005

Buyer beware. I bought this very attractive 5 burner gas cooktop for several reasons. I had faith in the Kitchen Aid name. I loved the idea of a five burner cooktop. The sealed burners made for easy cleanup. The range of burner output (6,000 to 14,000 BTU) was very good. The stainless steel was attractive, and I had heard it was easy to clean. I love cooking with gas.
Little did I know that this cooktop should come with a warning label that reads, "unsuitable for home canning." The heat from a normal home canner, combined with the amount of time needed to can, overheats the stainless cooktop and PERMANENTLY stains the finish. I searched the internet trying to find a way to remove the bluish gold stains, and ultimately learned that they are permanent. In Kitchen Aid's defense ---- if you happen to read the entire users' manual BEFORE purchasing the cooktop ---- you will find that they state,
"The large diameter of most water-bath or pressure canners combined with high heat settings for long periods of time can cause damage to the cooktop and/or surrounding areas."
Frankly I never thought of making jam or canning some applesauce to be outlandish uses of a cooktop priced at just under $1000. Apparently I was wrong. Kitchen Aid obviously knows that there is a problem. My faith in their products has been destroyed.
