5 out of 5 stars This product has saved my bacon...   July 14, 2005

I LOVE this roaster. Often - particularly on Sundays when the family is all at Church - this product has saved my bacon! I just put whatever meat and vegetable dish I plan to serve inside the roaster and set it to about 275 to 300 degrees. It slow cooks all the time we are away. When we get home several hours later, dinner is all ready and the meat slow cooked in this fashion is always fall-apart-tender and moist. I use this roaster so often I actually keep in on the counter top in the kitchen. That's saying a lot since it is good sized.

1 out of 5 stars It Stinks!!!   November 23, 2006

Be forewarned, there is a 1-hour "curing" process that must be performed in a well ventilated area outside your home. I was aware of this requirement and performed the procedure on my patio. The instructions warn that the roaster will smoke during this procedure and it certainly does.

The next day I used the roaster inside the house and that was a mistake. It only gave off a small amount of smoke, but the smell was overpowering. If you want your house to smell like burning electrical insulation, your throat to burn, and your mouth to taste like you are sucking on a copper penny; then follow the manufacturer's directions. If you really want a Nesco roaster, I would suggest that you repeat the "curing" process at least two or three times before using it inside your home. I'm not sure this will work, it is only a guess as I was so angry that I threw mine in the trash.

My recommendation would be to buy a roaster that doesn't require a "curing" procedure before use. If such a procedure is necessary, then the manufacturer should perform it.

4 out of 5 stars I Love my NESCO !!!!!   January 15, 2007

I have had my nesco for 6 years and I have two of them. One is 6 quarts and the other one 18 quarts. I too was dissappointed with the fact that you had to pre-burn it out. But I was stuck and had to do it. What helped me through this was my air purifier. My sister bought her nesco in the winter time so she raised all of her kitchen windows up to help her through it.

After the curing procedure, it was well worth it. I can cook a whole dinner in it. I just love it. Sometimes in life you have to go through pain to get to pleasure. I love this because it cooks bake potatoes. fish, hot dogs, pork chops, chicken, and steaks tenderly. Oh, and what it does to ribs is sinful -- it is so tender and good. In my 18 quart nesco; I put those babyback ribs on along with my secret seasonings and forget about it.

I don't use it as a slow cooker because I basicly use it to cook healthier. I put the meat on the rack inside and all of the excess fats are drained into the well. I love cooking fish on the rack. I use it to steam my foods and the flavor is preserved that way. I have cooked string beans in aluminum foil and other vegetables on the rack with water at the bottom for steam and it has been wonderful for me.

Once I had some friends over for dinner and I was serving pork chops, as you can guess, some of my family members decided to drop by. In the bottom of my freezer, I had some freezer burned pork chops that had been in a plastic bag for over a year. I took them out and seasoned and cooked them in the nesco and you could not tell them from my new pork chops buy appearance or taste.

My nesco saved me. So this is why I love it so much. If you can get pass the burning process, it will be well worth it.

Although there are far more ways to use this remarkable oven I use it to steam all of my foods because it doesn't tie me to the stove If I want my meat crunchier I leave it in the nesco longer.

Yes, I would recommend this product and have recommended it to my sister and she loves hers.

Because you have to burn it out before you can use it I will have to give it 4 stars. If we did not have to do that I would have given it five stars. Jan 15, 2007 7:15 AM PST

Cooks quickly and evenly. Not as good at being a slow cooker as my slow cooker but it is wonderful as it was intended.

5 out of 5 stars Great for turkey   December 8, 2007

I loved this roaster from our Tday turkey. The only issue was browning; but with a little kitchen bouquet and melted butter, plus a little butter under the skin, the bird browued up nicely. The meat was the best we've ever had-- moist, juicy, and perfectly cooked. We also deep fried a turkey, which had better skin, but the roaster produced the better, tastier meat.
The "smoking" process is no big deal (which you must do before using the roaster), just make sure to do it outside or in a well ventilated porch or garage. It's stinky, takes about an hour, but isn't difficult! Well worth it.
