Great oven - mediocre toaster May 15, 2005 Derek G (Las Vegas, Nevada) 41 out of 41 found this review helpful
I bought this originally as a replacement for a toaster, but find myself baking a lot more now that I have it. What separates this model from the others is it is roomy enough to bake a small pizza or a large steak inside. This really comes in handy if you hate heating up a large oven (and the whole house) just to bake a small item. The oven comes with a broiling pan in addition to a grill rack and it heats up very quickly thanks to four separate heating elements; two above and two below. A blue indicator on the front of the oven lights up when it's turned on and a safety feature turns off the heating elements automatically when the oven door is opened. Three separate knobs control how you want to use it. One selects the temperature you wish (up to 450 degrees), another timer selects how long you wish to bake (up to 30 minutes), and a third and less-useful timer is designed strictly for toasting. Allegedly you can set it to light, medium, and dark for perfect toasting but the oven's definition of light, medium, and dark may vary from yours depending on whether you're toasting a thin, light item like white bread or a thicker item such as an english muffin or bagel. One minor annoyance is you have to remember to make sure the temperature gauge is flipped over to the "toast" setting when using this third knob or the oven won't come on at all. A nice feature is a slide-out tray that can catch crumbs and drippings so the underside of the oven isn't dirtied. Black and Decker recommends you do not use it when toasting items, but I haven't had any problems as long as I keep it clean. They claim the tray and the rest of the interior are non-stick but don't believe it. Once you start grilling, you'll be scrubbing away just as much as a regular oven. Perhaps I'm a clean-freak, but in spite of the slide-out tray I usually place a broiler pan underneath the rack for grill items just so I won't have to scrub the heating elements. It catches all the juices so the oven stays clean but when cooking this way you'll have to flip your chicken or steaks as it won't grill both sides evenly. Like regular baking items, plan on scrubbing the grill and pans after you're done. Just sticking them in a dishwasher won't get them clean enough. The oven has a rounded glass window that cleans easily enough without removal. This thing can get pretty hot when it's going so you'll need to give it space on each side for it to ventilate properly. It comes with a thick, industrial-grade power cord, but even then I worry the oven can get hot enough to melt through it (no problems so far.) The unit comes with a one-year warranty, but the warranty registration asks enough suspicious questions (e.g. what interests do you like, how much do you make) that your information is likely being sold to mailing lists, telemarketers, and other scum. I'll pass. Finally, my only major gripe is in regards to the reason I bought the thing in the first place. It's just not a very good replacement for a regular toaster. Even though it heats up quickly, the fact that the interior is so big and roomy means it will take twice as long to toast a piece of bread. It also tends to toast items rather unevenly for some reason. If you're buying it as a supplement to your regular oven, then I say get it. If you're simply looking for something to toast bread, bagels, or muffins, you'll probably be better off with a standard toaster. Hope the review helped.
I've Had It With Black & Decker Products! October 11, 2005 Richard Sullivan (Los Angeles, CA USA) 13 out of 17 found this review helpful
This is the third Black & Decker product in a row that has failed shortly after purchase. My previous B&D toaster oven was inexpensive and the toaster option failed within 5 days. I don't even have the time to shop much less go thru the hassle of returning things that don't work, so my strategy is I just don't buy things anymore. Is this the end result sellers are looking for? The toaster option on this particular pizza model failed after three months, and that's the job I need it to do 90% of the time. I live in an isolated area where returning anything is a major job in itself, and for anything under $100 I end up tossing in the garbage. I've tired of wasting my money and of being so disrespected and disregarded by manufacturers and sellers alike. Since this was near the top of the line in Black & Decker toaster ovens I thought it would be worth the risk. I was wrong. No, it's not acceptable to expect the customer to schlep failed mercahndise back to the seller. We expect the things we spend our hard earned cash on to WORK. I have the ability to completely re-do my kitchen, but I'm so burnt out on appliances that don't work and workmen who do sloppy work [when they actually show up, that is], that it's easier just to make do with what I've got.
Bad bad toaster oven... June 7, 2006 Bilingual Tot Tutor 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have had a *few* problems with this toaster oven... Problem #1: after cleaning the toaster oven the first time, almost all of the numbers and markings rubbed off Problem # 2: the door handle detached from the glass door within 2 weeks Problem #3: the toaster oven and the sides of the handle get quite hot (which, aside from posing a fire hazard, is a big deal when the handle falls off when you are checking on food--you have to put it back on...) Problem #4: there have been at least 2 fires inside the toaster Problem #5: the baking mechanism broke so I can only toast (the blue indicator light does not light up when the oven is on bake & the toaster does not bake) Problem #6: the toaster alternates between taking forever to toast a piece of toast and quickly burning it Problem #7: the toaster toasts unevenly (I flipped my bread over half way through the cycle to make sure the sides got toasted more evenly) Problem #8: the baking mechanism did not work if the timer was not off (the blue light will not even go on) Problem #9 (more of an annoyance): if your toaster is unplugged & you turn the toaster knob on, the toaster will make the toasting sound (so you come back thinking you will have toast but in fact, the oven was never on) Well, I just ordered a new toaster because it is *difficult* (to say the least) to use this toaster, seeing as it has no numbers, markings, baking mechanism, and has a hot handle that falls off... not to mention the little fires it starts and the fire hazard it obviously poses. I figure Black & Decker knows about the fire hazard because the door has instructions of what to do if there is a fire inside the toaster (it says to close the toaster door & unplug it... it omits the important step of turn toaster off before unplugging--all consumers need is also the threat of electricution when using this defective product). After just 3 or 4 months in my possesion, this Black & Decker toaster will be let to rest/thrown away (3-4 months after it should have been). Please do not donate this toaster to Goodwill or to the needy if (I mean, when) you have problems with it--throw it away, it's quite useless & a hazard.

Disappointing Product September 9, 2007 K. Miller 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Black & Decker makes pretty good light-use power tools so I figured this oven would do the trick too. Not so. The "convection" fan, which didn't noticeably improve cooking from the start, ceased operation after about 10 uses and after about 3mos. the toaster function quit. This was not from high volume use - we're talking one person using it about 2-3 times/week and mostly on toaster setting. The only way is works now is on "oven" setting. This product is weak for the $50-plus price tag.
